We raised 5 kids in a 3 bedroom 1 bathroom 1500 sq ft house. I had to be organized and strict...but everyone survived. It drives me crazy how some parents act like its abuse to make their kids share. My kids are very responsible, independent and know how to compromise and negotiate. Our house was quite inexpensive ($36,000) and we as a family improved it together. I was able to be a stay at home mom and we were able to afford nice vacations because we made our house work for us!

I have my 5 boys in the same room. There ages are 18-3. Yeah I’m sure there are days when the older boys would like their own rooms but honestly when we moved into this new house my oldest was totally fine sharing with his brothers. My kids are close despite the age differences. My parents shared a room with their siblings. 4 boys in one, 4 girls in one. I think it was the norm back then. I don’t know why kids have to have their own rooms now a days.

Did we buy your house?? That's what we live in , with three kids, and I constantly say, " The people before us had five kids and lived here 60 years with no shower and were FINE!" Hah. Less to clean, easier to simplify in smaller spaces.

I just in the past week or two started letting my daughter pick out what she wanted to wear - she's only 4, so I hadn't really thought she cared much up until now! Earlier this week, I was getting out her clothes to wear to a Christmas party at preschool and she found this hand-me-down red velvety sparkly dress that she wanted to wear. It wasn't what I had planned for her to wear and she said, "But Mommy, it sparks joy for me!" 😳 I about died!! 😂 They hear more than we realize. hah So she got to wear it and oh my gracious, the joy in that child's heart all day was amazing. She was like a whole different person! It definitely gave even more clarity to me understanding what it means for something to spark joy. I never realized how important that was for our entire DAY...even in little ones!!

It is so encouraging to see parents who are willing to be the authority in their household, and lead with the firm kind of love children need. That makes me sound so old, but I'm only in my 40's LOL. I do have a house full of young adults, though, and have received more than enough criticism for having "rules" and holding my kids accountable to them over our years of parenting. Our reward has been having young adults who have become absolutely amazing people. Now...if only I could get the 22yo to declutter her room. That's one scary little space these days!

I've been watching your channel for a couple years now and realize I've taken for granted how well thought out and produced they are. I just looked at a bunch of kids room declutter videos and ended up coming back to watch yours because it is so much quicker and gets to the point with helpful hints right away. Other videos can feel like home videos that were done to kind of help the person stay accountable to what they're trying to do. Yours feels like a tv show that's professionally produced. Keep up the great work and thank you!!

I have this same issue with my boys. I will buy things that I like and they never wear them. Actually on thanksgiving my 7 year old and I were in a HUGE battle because he wouldn’t wear any of the pants he had. Like 10 pairs of jeans. And he wanted to wear the two pairs of joggers that had holes. We finally after an hour of both of us crying came to an agreement and that night I went Black Friday shopping and bought him 5 new pairs of joggers. Two dressier style for church, holidays, and special occasions and 3 everyday wear at home, play outside, work at the shop pants. I cut my losses on the other pants he wouldn’t wear and donated them. He wears the pants in his drawer now and I am not constantly washing clothes that are just pulled out and put on the floor while he looks for other clothes. Yeah it stinks that I spent money on clothes that he didn’t wear but at least someone else was blessed by the jeans.

I am not quite that minimal with bedsheets, but I do limit it to 2 sets per bed. Then if there is sickness or an accident in the middle of the night, I don't have to stay up for 2 hrs to wait for laundry.

I just grab up everything I havent seen my little one use or wear in the past bit (sometimes month sometimes 6months) toss it all in a pile in the livingroom and ask her to pick out everything she loves and cant live without. The catch is it has to fit in her room with a honest home. 99% of the time she parts with everything I select and has even been known to return from putting things away with more stuff to part with! My second tip and something that has worked for my whole family is to find someone in need. Once we find them and know what their needs are we shop our home first! Oh you need kitchen stuff because your just starting out on your own, he we have a complete extra set of plates and cups you can have. Here is some skillets too. Its super easy to part with things when you know they are going to be used and not just tossed in the trash.

I’d rather work with what we have than buy a bigger house so I love this. We thrift 99% of our clothing for the whole family. Darn straight it’s our house and we make the rules.

I've decluttered a lot of areas in our home over the last 3 years so I'm finally starting to minimize the bins of kid clothes in the basement. I was in shock the other night when I pulled out 30 pairs of shorts for my son in his next size up!!😱 most of which were torn or worn out. I managed to get it down to 13 pairs and may go down even more depending on what he wears when he gets to that size. These videos have been helping me keep up the momentum😁

Regarding kids clothes, I love how you said that they "aren't serving it's purpose" by being strewn on the floor. They are meant to be worn. Yes! Such a super simple concept but it's like, duh!! I have so many clothes my kids have outgrown but I put it aside meant to sell it but clothes are such a low commodity (there are too many kids clothes sold everywhere!), I doubt I would get much for it and it's causing more stress holding on to it anyway. Sometimes I just need to hear it from someone else even if I know it myself!

Yes, yes, yes! Kids don't need a lot of clothing. I tell my kids if they have clothes on the floor then they have too many clothes! I keep a spreadsheet with a list of what I have in each size in our 'grow into bins' so I don't over shop or over store items. I have a video on it if you want to see what works for us.

Thank you for acknowledging how hard it is for ME to get rid of things I paid for or we received as gifts. Luckily, my son doesn't really show any interest in his clothes so it isn't an issue for him. But realizing it's ME that is keeping too much is such a relief...that I'm not alone. I love your suggestion of cut my losses at this point because my sanity as the inventory-keeper is more important. I love this so much and appreciate how you are so genuine and totally understand. Thank you!

Another de clutter video that I saw said something I thought was really powerful: keeping the item doesn’t get you your money back. The money is ALREADY wasted... don’t punish yourself by keeping this thing around that makes you feel bad whenever you see it! I make a promise to myself I will not waste money the same way next time.

Thanks for that! I had bought some clothes before Covid, realized I didn't like the way they fit, but then never got the chance to return them since everything shut down. I keep looking at them, feeling bad every time I see them because it's money wasted and maybe I should try wearing them even if they're not flattering...What you wrote is so true! The money IS already wasted, no getting it back, and I've just been mentally punishing myself for months. Time to just donate them, maybe someone else will love them!

Thanks for these videos. Sharing, compromise and negotiation are precious life skills. It's no coincidence that psychologists refer to the post war "Me Generation " link with the rise in anxiety and stress consultations. It can be difficult at times to say "No!" especially when they're little and cute; but better to learn at home that we can't have it all, all the time. Life's lessons outside the home are much more painful and often too late as we tend to repeat and then medicate negative patterns. So big 👍👍👍to all who are giving really helpful comments here in support of this family 😍☺

Deep cleaning/tidying/decluttering/minimizing today and watching and rewatching old videos of yours. For now, our kids are older and it works to have their clothes, toys, homework space and items, and sleeping stuff all in their room. Not regretting spending too much on items at Target is a great tip, thank you for the reframe that you've given about that being a waste of our energy/space/time. We've lived in three places in two years and their rooms are only now feeling settled. Even though we decluttered a lot during each move, we still held onto things for the "what if" reasons. My son (8 years old) isn't going to do crafts anymore and neither is my oldest (11.5 years) but I just can't quiet let that box go. It's gone untouched for at least 6 months and I'm sure it would be just fine being tossed. I ended my day of decluttering with a words of affirmation list (you are smart, brave, kind, etc) and a list of idea of what he can do (favorite things he likes inside, outside, with friends/sibling/parent, etc) and he was so excited! He's already charging an old remote control car that was one of the things that he really loves. And I'm relieved and a bit grossed out that there are TWO garbage bags of items in the trash after this morning's cleanup. Thanks for the motivation, tips and (my favorite) ending with "I love you!" as you have done in your recent videos.

Love this Dawn! We are blessed to have generous friends who pass great quality clothing to our kids, so I have been able to save a lot on the clothing budget! My 6 year old has become more vocal about what he likes to wear so I will often let him choose clothes when I buy them, but he has a limit eg you need 2 new t shirts. My toddler definitely has strong preferences and I have bought her a few things which she refuses to wear so I need to let them go! 🙈 In Australia the kids start wearing a school uniform from kindy age, so that helps to reduce the amount of variety in clothes that they need 😀💗

Once again, you enabled me to declutter yet another area of my home. Not just the kids clothes in their closet, but on what I keep for them to grow into. In particular the hand me downs which I know my kids will not wear, based on their preferences. For example, I had a whole box full of jeans from my niece who is 7 years older, while my daughter absolutely hates wearing any kind of pants, especially jeans. I thought maybe she will have different preferences when older, but who was I kidding. And if she does change preferences, I can easily buy pants nowadays for a good price. It oddly felt good to donate the box and have a more organized closet with just one small bin for hand me downs I know she loves.

Gosh this is so relatable...I finally got my daughter who is 4 now to usually put her dirty clothes into her hamper when she gets dressed in the am or puts on her pjs at bedtime. What a big help that is. And then for her stuffed animals she has in her room, I have 2 big bins for them and I put the last small load in her closet, in the dark corner and she doesn't even notice them. And, she recently helped me move too small items into a big storage box which was a fun afternoon for us to spend together.

Love your videos. I have been going back and watching old ones since finding you. We have 4 kiddos (1, 4, 6, 8) and aim for the simple and decluttered home life too. I had the same problem as you with over buying the next size for my kids. Because I try to buy 2nd hand and a little here and there, I was loosing track of what I had. For example, at season change I would have 15 tops for one kids and 2 bottoms. So I started a list on my phone of what I had for each kid at home and made a rule that I can only by one size up, no matter how nice the item.

My two older girls clean out their own closets (they're now nine and eleven) and they have been doing that for years. If I do it and I keep clothes they don't want to wear...well, then the clothes will just hang in the closet at take up space. They clean out their closets on a regular basis and they actually enjoy it.

Inventory the clothes. Then replace only the individual items as they are outgrown or destroyed. A dress for a dress, a pant for a pant. Or whatever they are into at the moment. My daughter loves dresses but refused to wear the warm tights I bought to transition to winter. We had a conversation and she said she wanted to wear jeans and t shirts instead. I bought one pair but she would still try to wear skirts in winter so I saw the need for a second pair. Now she rotates the pairs and is perfectly happy. We do a load of laundry every other day to keep things tidy. The best part is, I love not having to worry about piles of laundry anymore. It’s only a pile at a time. Lol.

I came to the conclusion that I need to go ahead and let go of the clothes that my 8 year old daughter does not want to wear (but I was hanging on to them because I wanted her to wear them). By doing that we got rid of about half of her clothes! One of the things that I was hanging onto was that exact pink dress with horses on it that you got rid of!! That's so funny that you had the same dress and you were hanging on to it too! LOL! I love your videos! Thank you for the inspiration!

What I did with my oldest a few years ago was I promised him i would never bother him about wearing certain clothes he hated as long as he let me take some pics of him in them. Afterward they would get donated.

Your 4 kids are 4-9 which means you had 4 kids under 5 at one point! Wow! I know this isn't related to minimalism but can you do a video on how you did it all? My husband wants 5 kids close in age but I'm a little worried about being able to handle it all

Paulina Lobato I’m not her but we also had 4 4 and under. DECLUTTER! Which I’m preaching to myself but it helps so much. Also just lowering your standards and trying to keep up with the most important things which to me is dishes, floors and bathrooms. And washing laundry although I’m known to have big piles of clean laundry 😬

Hey Paulina we also had 4 kids in 5 years. They are now 7 to 12 years old. I refer to those younger years as the "crazy" years, which I really just had to lower my expectations of everyone and myself. This didn't mean we let everything go, (I can't function well in complete chaos, plus I don't think it's fair to the kids) but it meant that I couldn't expect to do as much I once did and accept it as a season. As soon as my kiddos could walk they learned to help mommy put things away they were finished using. The season goes by so quickly, and now they are such good playmates and I love seeing them grow and be genuinely close friends. It is a gift, even though there certainly are some tough days!

I once wanted 4, now I want to be done at 2 but husband wants 3. My kids are 2 and 5 and life is finally getting easier and I want it to stay that way. He wasn't as hands on as I expected- because I exclusively breastfeed and he works a lot of nightshifts and 24 hr shifts. Have as many kids as YOU can handle and not have them just bc he wants that many bc with that many kids it's so hard on you especially if he wants them close in age

Hi Dawn, I have a request for a video (actually two) for you to consider for the new year. Title them right, and each could bring you lots of new subscribers from searches from the vast army of people like me. What I need is help with a major general declutter project, such as a whole room that has picked up a lot of clutter because it's not used much and it's easy to push stuff into. Making it harder is that I have to do it by myself. I thought this week's video was going to help, but it was too specific about the kids' clothes and stuff. What I need is a whole lot of general advice about a general plan to get started and tackle the mess. That brings me to the second video. I need help getting into the mindset to get rid of things that just aren't being used. There are things that it's easy to see I'm not going to use, but where I have trouble is with the things that fall into a gray area of "I could really use that and I'd hate to have to replace when I would if I throw it out." Thanks for all the help your videos provide. Merry Christmas!

I love that minimalism idea! My question is how do u get your kids in the habit of tidying up after themselves each day, not just every time u remind them?

What a great video. I much appreciate that you also share your failed strategies and how to learn from them. Very relatable! When having the choice between putting a book rack in the bedroom or the playroom where would you put it? Just like you, I don't allow toys in the bedroom. Thanks and greetings from Germany.

My son is normally so resistant to decluttering. I just found out it's partly because he was worried I would be upset he was getting rid of things I had chosen or that he thought I would think he should keep. But since we had more time to talk about it in quarantine, I reassured him I was happier about unneeded things going to thrift stores than sitting in work in his room. Boom. A giant contractor bag of clothes cleared out, which means less laundry piling up, more room for what he kept so less wrinkly clothes, and he rediscovered some old favourites that were buried under things he didn't wear. So many wins. And if course, some teen boy got incredible deals on some excellent and cool second hand clothes.

I do the same thing with my kids clothes. They can choose them for every day stuff, (as long as they are appropriate, etc.) but then I do reserve the right to choose our outfits for our Christmas card photos, lol

I always let my kids go with me to donate. My grandchildren have always had a modest amount of clothing and toys. Both moms include the kids and the kids have learned that is where their things go. It’s not a mystery that they are provided for and they know charity provides for others.

Thanks for the new ideas on working with kids to declutter. My Grand and I were decluttering books and I did the hold up each one and asked keep or donate, she wanted to keep 95 % of them, so that for sure doesnt work!

Another great video. A question (which you may have answered but I don't remember), when you pack away the kids toys that they are OK with not being out but don't want to get rid of, how long do you store it for and when that time is up do you just donate it or do you have the kids go through it again before donating? Since we told her that we'd "store them away" I don't know if we should have her go through it again or if she hasn't asked for anything from the box in x amount of time it is safe to donate. You know kids, sometimes they forget and sometimes they have memories like an elephant. I also have a suggestion since you have twin size beds you might want to keep an extra set of plain white on hand. I know it is easier to just throw a towel or something down but sometimes, especially with a fever, it feels better to sleep on sheets than a towel. That would still just be one set for all three beds so not much storage space needed.

I keep track of that clothes my son has through a note keeping app on my phone. Matt's 3T Clothes Short Sleeve Shirts - 3 Long Sleeve Shirts - 3 Sweaters - 1 Pants - 2 And so on. I make a different note for each size. (I like to buy things on sale for him to grow into. He's 2T right now but I found an awesome deal on 4T jammies yesterday so I got them. I'm already done shopping for 3T for him.)

I’m like that too, but for thrift shops. We buy everything possible used, due to our ideologies. We go to a thrift shop regularly and get really wonderful clothes for very cheap. We don’t usually buy stuff, but I always check for my kids clothes there. We usually go for play dates (as my son calls it, “the store where the toys are out of boxes.”)

We did this before Christmas. Their room had so many toys and I knew they only played with a few of them. We went through and they helped pick the things they really didn’t want first, then a while later I went through and we talked through some of the toys and i explained that we needed to get rid of stuff we don’t play with even if we might want it, then another one or two times I went in while they were busy and got rid of junk, trash, and put toys in a box to see if they even noticed they were gone. It’s been a process, but now when I ask them to clean their room (boys ages 4 and 6), they don’t give me a terrible hard time because it’s manageable for them!!

The room is beautiful! Love the colors in there. We have the same cubby and the same baskets that slide in there. Love how you just do fitted sheets and then blankets. It's perfect. Is that a crib in the corner? Does the little guy still like his crib?

Your advice is so good! I loved this video, and like all your others, i needed this. Our kids room is terrible at times. So hard to get them to put th8ngs away and with 4 kids’ clothing in 2 different rooms (mine and the older 2’s room). I would love my kids all in one room but i cant get the babies (1 and 2yrs) out of my bed. Any tips? And i am def going back through the bags of to grow into clothes that i know i have too many of.... i culled it down to 1 large bag each but they have way too much in some sizes....... i love sorting it out but i need to go back to your other video re how many of each item. Xx thankyou again for helping us with our messes! I love seeing your home.... i have way too man6 things on tables for “just in case the kids want them next”.

I’m not a minimalist or try to be but this is what has worked for me. I have in each of my girls wardrobes 3 summer pjs 3 winter pjs 5 long sleeve tops 5 short sleeve tops 2 hooded jumpers 2 thin throw over jumpers 1 knitted jumper 2 trackies 2 leggings 2 trouser pants 1 jeggings 2 shorts 2 skirts 2 long sleeve dresses 2 short sleeve dress 1 going out dress that they get every year for Xmas

For US folks, jumper=sweater here. For UK folks, in the US a jumper is a heavier dress like thing worn over a shirt. Kinda like a pinafore but made in corduroy, woven woollen, blue jean or canvas fabric. Thanks for sharing your list!

I also had to stop buying lots from garage sales. It’s so hard when it’s such a good deal though. I found we just ended up with way too much. This last summer my husband was working a lot so the kids and I chose to stay home lots of Saturdays instead of going to garage sales. It kind of sucks because I had to pay for a brand new pair of ice skates for my son and that’s something I usually find, but overall I think we saved quite a bit of money.
