Timelapse video of the building of the new Kiln at Kigbeare. Svend Bayer and a team of helpers built the kiln over a period of about 10 weeks. This was an experimental film, using a compact stills camera triggered manually whenever there seemed to be anything interesting happening. There are also several places where the camera has been ‘walked’ around the site to capture the extent of the work.

Thank you for making this video. I am in the process of building a kiln close to the same size and shape. It was meant to be an anagama. But it may be something else by the time I am done. I have never built a kiln before and this was the biggest risk of my life I am a single father of 3 children adn I am homeschooling my children while making this kiln to support my family. This is meant to be a jump back in time for me and my family. I am looking for another potter who wants to be a part of it, but so far it has just been me. I have built the studio and winter stopped me from putting up the roof over the kiln so I could begin the kiln. This video is so much fun to watch. Thank you for spending the extra time to click the button a milion times.

To make a self supporting arch, hang a chain on a large board from the approximate base measurements, to a size you require.

Pretty well. The outer layer is sand, clay, vermiculite and chopped hay. it forms a strong and insulated outer skin.

So this is the second build video recently where the wooden supports were removed by hand. In the first, the designer thoroughly explained how they precisely trimmed and shimmed the supports to facilitate removal. I thought the whole time, why bother? Why not just burn them out with the first test fire? It is a kiln after all.

It appears that you did not use "shaped" brick in your arch...Is that correct?
@BenBoswell
@BenBoswell 5 жыл бұрын
Patrick Bass most of the bricks were standard shape, the angle was created with additional mortar on the outside, though if I remember right there were some keystones at the top where the curve is tightest and there was a row of ‘springers’ at the foot of the arch. However i’m a photographer and this was a couple of years ago so I could be wrong in my recollection! Hope you enjoyed the film.

@@Alakwe this was a catenary arch, the formers were shaped with a chain, but it happened before I was there. I'd have photographed it otherwose.

Great video! I loved it! Imade a 3d animation video to show how my wood burning kiln was built. Her name is Norberta, after the Norwegian Ridgeback Dragon... She is much, much smaller though. Manabigama proportions. And I use no arches, or better yet, I use what I call a "radical Micenaean Arch" technique. The arch is locked in place by the weight and cement on the outside and above. So you don't have to spend money and time mounting a catenary wooden mold. Also, I don't insulate it so much, with that extra layer of external cement, because I want it to be "sort of" easily disassembled, in case I have to reassemble it somewhere else! that is another feature of small size kilns. Not possible with the big beast you have, there! Check it out in my channel if you like! Thank you for sharing! I'm going to watch the video about it's first firing now! Take care!
