I think something was lost in translation for you, mate. As a Brazilian (Portuguese speaker), what I understood from Kiko using the word FREEDOM, was strictly tied to his ability to spend time with his family and NOTHING to do with "his creative input not being accepted by the band". He mentioned several times, touring was heavy, several months in a row and he felt like his kids are growing and he wishes to be closer to them. He spent a LOT of time talking about this and not ONCE he mentioned anything related to not having creative freedom inside the band. When he talked about freedom, he mention that he feels privileged to have the freedom to walk away from a band like Megadeth, which I absolutely agree with him. But he also spent a lot of time saying how much the time with the band was important to him, about his excellent relationship with Dave and how grateful he was.

Exactly Vini, it was kind of a political/social comment on Brazil. He felt blessed that he has that option nowadays ,to quit something so huge like megadeth and still be ok (financially). His point was that, this is very rare for the average brazilian, which is sad.

THIS! I understand Portuguese, too and that's what I get from FREEDOM, just like in Spanish, as in having more time in your hands to devote to other things in life, unlike the reading they do in English about being "free" to compose what he wants, which seemingly was never a problem for either Kiko nor Dave to begin with.

Kiko has had more input and influence on Megadeth than any guitar play since Marty. Dave said he let Kiko into his writing circle, which is rare. The only instrumental Dave didn't play a solo on is all Kiko with "Conquer or Die." Kiko was co-writer with a bunch of songs on the last album. Megadeth even incorporated Kiko's acoustic guitar on several songs, just to add that Kiko flavor. He was also a great ambassador for the band, and Dave essentially let Kiko do his thing when it came to social media. Sure, you are limited to making Megadeth music, but Dave didn't stop him from making his own music. It's not like a Jason Newstead thing where Kiko had to only be involved with Megadeth. Megadeth has been touring like crazy. Kiko isn't from America and neither is his wife, so you get home sick and watch your kids grow up without you. Kiko has his priorities straight. Dave will always continue Megadeth until he doesn't. And Teemu was handpicked by Kiko and has been killing it. Everytime Megadeth gets a new guitar player, they end up putting out a very strong album to start with them. So, I look forward to what's to come and wish Kiko the best. He will forever be my second favorite Megadeth guitarist.

It's just time, joining a huge touring band like this doesn't really leave you with a lot of options, you're either in or out for non stop touring which is cool for a while but it takes a pretty big personal toll. He learned a lot, enjoyed his time and now it doesn't work anymore for him, off to better things ❤

As a Brazilian who has watched the podcast I can summarize what he said about leaving megadeth: >He HAS left (yes) >He has no clear plans of Re-Joining Angra, nor the members of Angra >He already has solo shows booked here in Brazil >He has no clear plans for the future, he said he will think about it (if he had clear plans he would have shared them cause this podcast is HUGE in Brazil) >He wants to spend more time with his family and be a present father >He has been influenced by Finnish culture (living in Finland) that has a heavy emphasis on fatherhood >He got "bored" of only having to play the same 20 songs for 9 years >He says Megadeth was too confortable and he wants to feel challenged again >he NEVER spoke badly about Mustaine or about not having creative choice, in fact he justified the heavy touring of Megadeth and said they were doing it right and professionally, it's just a PERSONAL choice and preference to leave and do his own thing and have more free time.

Hey guys, let me jump here and say more about what Kiko said. I watched it yesterday live (I’m from Brazil but I live in the US) and what Kiko said was: In 2011 when he was in Angra, they played in Rock in Rio and he almost lost the chance to see his daughter being born, because he was playing with Angra in Rock in Rio. He was able to make it, but for a few hours. Then, when he and his wife got the twins, he says after three weeks the babies were born he was going on tour with Megadeth. Long story short, he does not want to make big tours like Megadeth is doing (6 months), because he wants to spend more time with his family. He wants to enjoy this moments because kids grow up and he doesn’t wanna missed these moments. He says THIS Kiko when thinks about what the 2011 Kiko did in Rock in Rio, he thinks that was stupid. He said also back in 2011 he had a different mentality and nowadays his mind has changed. He also said in Finland they take the phrase “spend time with your family” real serious, and it’s a kind of culture that he really enjoys about Finland (His wife’s country). Was pretty much that. The interview was amazing and Kiko talked about everything…when he started to play guitar, about the Brazilian influence on his sound, when he used to teach guitar in Brazil, etc. As a Brazilian, I’m very proud of Kiko. Unfortunately Brazil is a country that does not appreciate real artists. In my opinion, Kiko has the best alternative picking technique. So relaxed and looks like he is not moving his right hand at all.

Let's take a step back and acknowledge that Dave has a history of muddy-ing the waters (so to speak) with his lineup, enough said. This isn't news to any of us. HOWEVER, that does not mean that is this particular case between Kiko and Dave. So it feels unfair to both for us as fans to jump the gun and assume that there is "bad blood" that is being kept on the DL. And tbh, I kind of anticipated this outcome from the very get go, but after so many years on the road for both of them, sometimes you just need to walk away with grace and we just need to accept that that's just how it will be sometimes. People are picking up alot of conspiracies, but the fact is that he is a dad and wants to see his kids grow up. Musicians are mostly emotional, so it might hit harder for them/us to deal with these things. I can only speak for myself, but my train of thought changed when I became a dad. Your wife understands why you are on tour, but your little kid or baby doesn't. If the husband is away all the time, she has to live a "single mother" kind of life, which is hard. Kids can get estranged from the father.

@@TexAgsArmyVet Dave is the boss, has always been the boss. It’s his band. That’s not Dave’s “shit”. It’s his band. Sounds like Kiko didn’t want to be in the road 10 months a year. Dave is in his early 60s. His children are grown. He’s gonna push hard for another 3-4 years, then retire. Kiko wants to see his kids grow up. That’s just life. You can’t expect Dave, James, and Dirk to work around Kiko. While in MD Kiko got to build his brand and gain a lot of popularity. Dave didn’t hinder him at all In any case, what SPECIFIC “Dave’s shit” to Kiko get fed up with? Angra is not a headlining “arena”band like Megadeth lol. I have been onboard with Angra since 97. I know them very well and have seen them many times. I didn’t discover Kiko thru Megadeth. I’ve known of Kilo his whole career. Regarding Chris Broderick. Exactly the same thing as Kiko. In Flames is not nearly the same size as MD (and I say this as someone that LOVES IF more than Megadeth). I 1st heard them on Japanese compilation album that I bought in 1996 in Tokyo, have loved them ever since. Jag Panzer was a decent band. Broderick & Kiko are amazing players. Dave is the boss. Dave writes all the music. Dave is the owner of the brand. Guys like Kiko, Broderick, James, Dirk, etc are all hired hands. They’re given contracts and per diems, and are paid employees. They’re certainly not getting a 4 way split of the touring loot. Kiko is simply thinking “hey, I can make almost as much $$ as I do in MD, and do my own thing, not answer to a “boss”, be with my family, make my own schedule etc” I doubt Broderick is making anywhere close in IF what he made in MD. He’s a hired gun there too. But Chris is a weird dude anyway. His entire existence is predicated on playing guitar and “being an artist”. So he decided to not “take the check” and moved on. Nothing wrong with that. Nothing to do with being tired of Dave’s “shit”. Broderick has always thanked Dave for allowing to be in MD and getting more exposure. All of the stories of Dave being an asshole are from 35 years ago in his drug addict days, and centered on fueds with Kerry King and Metallica, or from disgruntled former employees. Poland was fired for stealing the gear and selling it for drugs, Chuck & Jr are just bitter. They’re now in their 60s and playing for 50 people in dive bars. Marty is totally different beast. They revere him in Japan, because he’s embraced Japan, and lives as a “nihonjin”. He lives in Japan, works mainly with Japanese artists, his wife is , Japanese. That’s a very specific situation. I was a fan of Megadeth & Marty BEFORE Marty joined MD. Marty was ALWAYS huge in Japan, even before he joined MD. The 1st time MD played Japan with Marty, Japanese fans holding up “welcome Marty Friedman!!!” signs greeted the band at the airport. Not “welcome Megadeth”, but welcome Marty” lol The problem I have is people still, to this day, dredging up the past, and badmouthing Dave. It’s always “Dave’s fault” When Jr was jacking off on camera to some chick, it was Dave’s fault.

the truth is, kiko is a virtuoso guitar player. so is marty friedman. they playing for megadeth is like a border collie living into a small apartment. but he contributed to the band for 9 years, recorded two good albums, won an emmy and now it's time to go. the only weird thing about his departure is him leaving during the tour, mainly because he composed lots of stuff for that album, and he's a very professional dude. i watched the whole podcast and he said things like "we were talking about this since june. everything was set up for my departure, i choosed and trained teemu in my home". anyways... let's see what's next for him, but i'm pretty sure he's not joining any band anytime soon.

He did mention that something happened in his private life that prompted the departure. He hasn't specified what it was though so we can only speculate, but I think that was the reason why he decided to leave mid-tour, otherwise, he probably would have waited it out. Whatever happened it was enough of an emergency that he simply couldn't wait.

It's not hard to figure out. Check out Chris Broderick when he left. He was professional about the reasons but you have to play the part in Megadeth and Dave requires it. The look and everything. Now he could've been a little better to Kiko than others it seems to me but ultimately you are joining a brand in metal. Albeita a legendary one at that!

Kiko is phenomenally talented and seems like a really humble guy(not that one can really tell from interviews...). Really liked the last two albums. We're obviously never going to get another Peace Sells or Rust In Peace thirty years on, and nobody ever plays Canada east of Montreal so I'll never get to see them, but Dave runs a pretty tight ship, Dirk seems like he was born for the role and Lomenzo's great. Looking forward to more!

Kiko has some personal stuff he needs to take care of and Dave respects that and leaves the possibility open for Kiko to come back. It's uncertain when or if Kiko will return but they are remaining friends. It seems like you are making it harder to understand than it really is.

Freedom in this context relates to the fact that there are professions that require you to be away from your family over long periods of time, in which case you miss out on that life, seeing your wife/husband/kids and creating memories with. It's not at all confusing, it was a choice between his immediate family or "life on the road." Apparently he has chosen the latter so i give him two thumbs up for his commitment on what actually matters in this so-called "life."

Megadeth has always had exceptional guitarists, everyone of them. When Mustaine is the least talented guitarist in a group, that’s really saying something to how good everyone from Poland, to Friedman, to Kiko is. That said, Teemu absolutely blew me away, I think he may even be the best out of them. That’s subjective of course and there’s technically no such thing as “the best,” everyone’s good at some things, while not as good at others, but overall, I think he may be the most talented.

I know for a fact that megadeth members can’t do a lot of stuff. They probably have to ask for permission to even post stuff. I’m saying that because if you follow a megadeth member before they be a megadeth member, you notice A HUGE difference in how they post and what they post. Kiko is used to be the boss (in Angra) and have the freedom to do whatever, now he probably needs permission if he decide to promote some brand or whatever he wants to do. In the other hand, Dave knows how good Kiko is and even if there are many good guitar players out there, many of them are just good. Kiko is something else. Kiko is probably the most influential guitar player in Brazil, if we talk about heavy metal. Not even Andreas Kisser influenced so many people on playing guitar. I can tell you that.

I don't understand the confusion for these people he hires. *As a musician and fan, it's always been clear to me since around the mid 90's that members are also Dave's employees. I wouldn't take the job, but if I did, I wouldn't expect to have a lot of input, if any, on the music composed. I am the exact same way, but I'm an oddball in only desiring a 3 piece thrash-melodic death metal band anyway.* No other guitarist, no problems! Input from a bassist and drummer wouldn't bother me at all.

When you join somebody else’s band, specially 30+ years into the bands career, you don’t get freedom. I think that’s a poor choice of words, but you were hired to do what the job entails. That’s it. It’s not like anybody who has gone into Megadeth didn’t already know this. Megadeth always sounds exactly the way Dave Mustaine wants it to sound. No matter who is in the band. The people to the left and right and behind him are completely interchangeable.

Dave is a control Freak with a big ego that gets in the way of Megadeth’s momentum. He recruits guitar players who initially start out unaware or in denial of Dave, the monster. There was a reason he was cast out of Metallica. He also probably jealous that the 4 guys in Metallica are still together and have reached success and are humble guys who aren’t cycling through guitar player of the moment.

I think Kiko left primarily for his family, but we all know no one lasts with Dave. It must be tough for a musician to not be allowed any creative input in a band other than a solo. We all know its either Daves was or the highway. I think its easier for Kiko to do his own thing now. He can tour whenever he wants. Its perfect thing to do for him since he has become very popular over last few years.

In other words he's gone but the door is open for a return. I could see Kiko being involved in the creative process for a future album and wouldn't be surprised to see his name as a writing credit on the album. Chris and Shawn left Megadeth after they thought jamming ideas that weren't used were better than what they played on Supercollider and they didn't want to go on another album and touring cycle with limited creative input. But the touring schedule seems more of an issue for Kiko than the creative process.

Let me start by saying that I didn't listen to the podcast, I only read excerpts from it. From what I understand from what I read, he was talking about how he wants more time with his family and he doesn't want to miss being there for his children as they grow up. He almost missed the births of his kids and then he was back on the road again shortly afterwards. I can imagine that touring with a band like Megadeth is a serious commitment and it doesn't leave a lot of free time to be spent with your family or doing something else. I think Kiko realized during the first part of his hiatus just how much he is missing out on by not being around. I think his decision to continue was because he didn't want to keep missing out. I don't think his comments around freedom was because Dave was limiting him as a musician (I saw an interview with other bandmembers who said that while he is rigid with the old stuff sounding the same as it always has, he is also open to let them try new things on the new songs and add their own spin on it), I think it was because the intense work was limiting the time he could spend with his family. By taking the time off Megadeth (either permanently or temporarily) he now has the freedom to set his schedule up in such a way that he can be there for his family and watch his children grow up. I also think that the reason why Dave is choosing to continue to call it a hiatus is because he wants to leave the door open for Kiko to return in the future if he chooses to do so. Sure, I don't know what goes on behind closed doors, but from what I gather, the parting of Kiko seems to have been an amicable one and they seem to still be on good terms. From what I know and understand about Dave, he's not the kind of guy who would fake nicety or beat around the bush so if Kiko was out for good, then he would have said so. I might be completely wrong though, but that's the impression I got. Either way, I wish Kiko the best moving forward.

So... i saw the podcast, he acctually said that he need to be with his family, from my point of view, he kinda never knew that he was affecting his family, this started way before megadeth where he told that on Rock and Rio with Angra, he almost missed his son's birth, so he could play on Rock in Rio, and on July (or sometime around) he just got in a difficult decision, where it was Megadeth, or his family, and for those who know kiko even before Megadeth, they know kiko is kinda a Workaholic on music, so it must be a difficult decision, he also told the a exemple of how hard was to live between those 2 worlds (the megadeth world and his family world) he told about the show in portugal with megadeth, that on the day, hiw father (with is 80+ years old) was going to visit kiko and his familly, with he missed just to play with Megadeth, he also told that he was "growing" and decide to stay with his family, i love kiko, but man, Family is aways first, Kiko did the right choice, he don't have to think about Megadeth, he has to think about his family, but dont worry, he also told that he was speaking with dave mustaine months before the "time out", so Dave and Kiko are okay with this, respect for the guts he have eu falo português, então eu to tentando dar as noticias de uma forma que ajude a ninguém ficar desesperado Haha (if you want, translate this line frrom brazilian portuguese to English)

My guess is that Mustaine is once again considering his solo career outside of Megadeth. On at least two occasions, he wrote solo albums that ended up becoming Megadeth LP’s instead. Being a solo artist outside of the machine of Megadeth opens up a world of great artists to come on board to guest in any album Dave puts out. Marty Friedman will most likely not be involved in a reunion that last more than one album, or tour. Yet, if Dave goes ‘solo’, Marty can guest on several songs, new compositions, and guest on a handful of shows, when scheduling allows. It really time for Megadeth to wrap things up, retire like Slayer, and to have Mustaine make 2-3 solo albums, then retire himself. The cost of touring has very nearly become prohibitive, with Dave himself stating every down day loses 47k on the road. Without major label tour support, i think we are going to see less and less big tours and more one off, smaller intimate shows, targeted in bursts, over larger productions. Festivals and the like will become the venues for big productions and major band showcases. Kiko has a great career, a large internet following, and will land exactly where he wants. I wish him all the best for himself and his family
