This video is for service dog teams who want to train their dog to be calm and confident when a dog suddenly charges, snaps, lunges or barks aggressively at their dog in a store or when out and about. This is also a great tutorial for those who want have a friendly dog who they would like to bring to dog friendly cafes and dog friendly shops where it can be common that another dog might lunge at them. This video can also be used as the final step for training dogs who have had issues with reactivity, with the help of a trainer to guide your through the steps so they can help you with when to raise and lower criteria. In NO WAY does this video condone training fake service dogs so you can go places pet dogs aren't allowed by law. Also even if you don't have a reactive dog you might want to hire a trainer to help you work with your service dog on this issue as it can be hard to break up criteria especially when moving onto extremely unpredictable circumstances. When in doubt, stick as much as you can to training set up where nothing can go wrong and you are using helpers and decoy dogs you trust.
Here is the protocol for working with dogs in training setups:

Great advice, as always. I really like the emphasis on "training setups" for safety and creating the best adapted dogs. So many people don't see the value in slow, progressive training setups. It's really the only way to create calm, confident, safe dogs without leaving your progress, and their mental health, up to luck. Thank you again, Emily, for your continued valuable work to help people and their dogs.

Thank you so much for your content. It truly helps my service dog. We had to backtrack to in training due to stacked traumas causing reactivity. We have made it to being able to safely train in public, although she’s not confident enough to work for me in public again yet. The exercises and advice you have provided have built so much more confidence and optimism. It’s always ok to back up in your training to rebuild the confidence in a dog that has become fearful. It builds the bond as well. She was solid before the traumas, and we are slowly but safely getting her back to where she used to be.

Thank you! I'm legally blind, so I rarely have a chance to actually predict and prevent these situations. I have an issue where my dog is very good at ignring dogs on duty, but if a dog invades his space, like comes up right in his face when he is in a down-stay, he will tell the dog to back off. Understandable, but I need him to stop and I don't know how..
@kikopup
@kikopup 2 жыл бұрын
I suggest working on the space invading with friends who have calm dogs teach your dog to trust you that the dog wont bother him, then also you could teach him to alert you that a dog is coming to close like poke you if you wanted. Its amazingly inconsiderate that people let their dogs come over and bother others, if your dog is good at communicating with dogs and tells the dog to go away it really is quite appropriate and keeps you safe too. I am so sorry that you even have to deal with that issue.

@@kikopup Thank you. Hm well I at least know a couple of dog owners I could potentially get hsome help from (the rest have dogs who are too high-energy). Yeah it's infuriating, especially when it's like on a bus or on a busy side-walk, but so many dog owners here in Sweden live in this weird world-view that their dog should interact with every dog it spots on the street! My dog is calm and friendly, but he also has a lot of integrity and prefers to break the ice from a distance before he lets anyone, two- or four-legged, burst his personal bubble.

Thanks so much for this video! I'll practice near our dog park. My service dog in training did bark back when a reactive dog was really lunging/barking on a long leash towards us, and when the leash/yard reactive Aus. shepherd next door got out of its yard and came at us he pulled towards it. I'm trying to really work on getting him to focus more on me, during walks, too... a coonhound so he tends to get his nose down and forget I'm on the planet. Your videos have been a great help to us.

Your reactive rover is so lucky to have you! 💖 Reactive dogs are still dogs that deserve love and affection, and it's so nice when owners are smart about handling their reactive dogs to keep everybody safe! Sometimes, reactive dogs prefer to stay home anyway, because sometimes they feel anxious or frustrated whenever they are in public and having those reactions. I just wanted to thank you for being so considerate- everybody wins! 🎉

Awe, It was not the dogs I was concerned about but the humans that would bring their dog into a place dogs arent even allowed if there dog is reactive. Having owned many reactive dogs, I find the rude thing is people with loose dogs in places where its supposed to be illegal because it makes it so the reactive dogs feel unsafe and cant find a safe place to enjoy.

I unfortunately had a real life situation with my old service dog Zeus. I had to do a lot of back training with him on not being dog reactive because he was around humans who refused to listen to what I asked of them while I was not in the house and he learned bad habits from their dog who by the way they train fake service dogs. So I had to reteach him practically everything and who to listen too. Before I went to the hospital with my sister and my dad to the hospital. I normally would not take both of my service dogs with me but because I for some reason didn't trust them alone at home because of the harassment I received at home from guests and neighbors I decided to bring both with me to lessen my anxiety. I didn't go inside cause we had a guest who came with us who needed a ride and I was very weak that day and I knew I wasn't allowed to take both of my service dogs in a small place like that. So I was staying outside sitting on a bench waiting. Zeus and Zenna we're totally calm. I wasn't paying attention to what was behind me but their was another service dog that came behind me and I agree obviously more well behaved than mine that day. Zeus got up and was trying to approach this dog and barking at him. I firmly held him back corrected him he stopped and came back and laid down. The lady was freaking out saying that my SDs we're fake because Zeus supposedly lunged at her dog which did not happen. She went to complain to the police and so I had to call the police myself. By the time the police came to finally talk to me. I explained to him why I was sitting out here. Yes these 2 are my service dogs and I apologized to her for Zeus's behavior I know it was uncalled for and my dog understands this. She had no right to be harassing me the way she did. The police agreed and said that if their was another problem that I would have to leave for the day and I understood that. Nothing happened and we left as soon as my dad came out. Cause I was done with the harassment and was being way overboard and understanding how she felt. Their was no need for her to treat me that way. After this experience I learned to stop taking my SDs to dog parks and do individual training and walk them on leashes more and be friends with people who are willing to help my dogs proper behavior. It was my mistake to make friends with stupid toxic people that teach their dogs bad behaviors and allow them to get away with it.

Love your videos, like always!❤️ Because of your training videos, my 7 month old Australian Shepherd is calm and collected in public, does not react at all with other dogs barking, and enjoys settling anywhere with me. I have a question, I have a front yard with a fence to bring my puppy to potty and whenever someone passes by my house on the sidewalk on the other side of the fence my dog would alert bark. I realized when I bring him outside of my fence, he doesnt care for people walking by. The fence is the boundary line of when he will alert bark in my front yard. He never barks in public or anywhere else just on my property. I was thinking to training my puppy whenever he sees someone pass by to praise him (for seeing the person and not alert barking) and give him a treat (maybe starting at my front door to create distance when he sees people passing by? I could use my friend to help me with this). Let me know if there is any better way. If you have a video regarding this that would be great.

So helpful, Lucy is great on walks, but gets very excited when we approach a house with a gate and a loud barking Doberman behind it. She does not bark back, but her pace quickens when we are near it. Unfortunately for many people, their dogs are decorations or alarms. Emily, can you share your exercise routine or daily routine to get your dogs energy out?
@kikopup

Lol, basically the more you exercise your dog the more stamina they will have. So Bliss my service dog, I thought I would increase his stamina with more exercise and now he's more and more active inside the house because hes physically fit. For me the key is finding the right amount of exercise to keep your dog physically fit and happy with the amount of time they have down time, if you create an athlete they will want to be doing stuff all the time

I walk with crutches, so I’ve been creative with exercise! The game that really tires my dog out is “find it”. I’ll choose a room, and hide a high value treat with the door closed. I open the door and give the command, and he has to use his nose to get the reward. Make it easy to start, then make it harder! I hide them at different levels, and use different rooms depending on difficulty. All that nose work tires them out more than running around, it builds confidence and they love it!

This is soo important! I have had 4 separate encounters locally where "animal friendly" spaces have become dangerous. Home Depot- chased by a pack.of Chihuahuas, dogs off leash and not under control of owners, and lastly had a pit Mastiff lunge for my dog's neck and got my thigh in the process. My service dog does very well- he's curious but focused. What is a good way to address an owner whose dog is creating an unsafe environment?

Omg I am so sorry. I suggest strait to the manager and employees and avoid confrontation because what can happen is as you talk to them they can get angry and then try to harass your dog etc... people with off leash dogs in stores are inconsiderate human beings and so there is no point trying to ask them to help you out by obeying the leash laws... they wont usually care how you or your dog feels, so getting store to go confront them is best
@RustedSteele

@@kikopup I usually do confront them head on and usually they just leave. I tell people that, in Canada, they are breaking a Federal Law by distracting my service dog, she alerts for epilepsy and diabetes. It's covered under the Canadians with Disabilities Act. They tend to get their stuff together and leave real quick when you threaten to call the cops and have them charged.

@@spicykittyh1 I actually do think it's worth the risk, because when these people distract my service dog they are playing with my epilepsy, and thus my life. Unfortunately, if you're going to have a service dog these days, you have to be willing to stand up for yourself. There are way too many Karen's who feel entitled to distracting medical tools that are there to save lives, not be pet by strangers with 0 impulse control.

Actually a vet parking lot is a great place to work on it cause the vet techs are hyper obsessed with not letting the dogs off leash etc as they take the dogs from peoples cars to the vet, also the dogs are so stressed to be with a stranger they do not stare at other dogs they are worried about the other person holding their leash. Of course getting help from friends with happy go lucky dogs meeting first around your house or places your dog is comfortable then meetups in malls or stores where you move away from eachother and return so your dog sees a dog appear but its the friendly person and their chill dog and you just keep doing these social meetings.

My dog is a rescue with a past of being attacked and is really scared of other dogs and people. It's difficult on walks bc we live in a neighborhood where other people don't socialize their dogs and many times don't keep them on a leash (or let their dogs run up to any dog and the owner doesn't care that their dog is mean).... How do I desensitize my dog to this? I'm worried there will be a fight eventually. My dog shys away and tries to avoid them, but they come up to him and I often have to yell to the owner to get their dog... It's frustrating

Do you have any videos on managing hyper social dogs? My 7 month old puppy wants to play with every dog he sees and where I live avoiding other dogs is not possible. He drops to the ground (to show he wants to play and to prevent me moving him) when they are walking in our direction from quite far away and it makes walks quite hard.
@judyives1832
@judyives1832 Жыл бұрын
That’s probably not a desire to play. It’s called “fawning”. (Or obsequious obnoxious syndrome”) Dogs have three main choices for reacting to threats or fearful situations. Fight, flight or Fawn. Fawn means they throw out a lot of “don’t hurt me, I’m just a silly puppy” behaviours. Rolling on the ground, whining, poking with their front paws, scooting closer on their bellies or exposing their bellies, . etc are indicators that the dog is very stressed but knows he can’t leave the situation because of the leash or doesn’t want to leave your side. He doesn’t want to fight either, so these types, fling themselves toward the other dog hoping to appease them. A dog like this pulls towards the dog but REALLY is afraid to meet it on leash. Very few owners know how to read this body language and think their dog is really keen to have on leash greetings to both dogs and people. When you allow this to happen, you are abandoning your dog to deal with the situation alone and this can sour your dog to walks and eventually make the leash reactive. Everyone has met the hysterical dogsthat leap all over you yet nips the back of your leg or bites your dog, when you aren’t looking. The owners ALWAYS says “but he is SO friendly”.
