This is an in depth professional dog training video tutorial on the Protocol for Raising Criteria for Emotional and Behavioral Modification By Emily Larlham. This video is on how to raise criteria when trying to change a dog’s behaviors and emotions in training set ups in regards to something that previously has made him act fearful, reactive, over-excited or aggressive. This video uses the example of a dog reacting to other dogs, but the protocol can be used for anything. I will create more videos using other examples of triggers as well as show what to do next if working on introductions.
A big than you to my friend Joanna Chang and Gummy Bear the Aussie for helping me create this video that I know will help so many dogs and their people! I am also extremely grateful to all the dogs I have worked with as well as mentors and trainers I have learned from around the world.
If you have a dog who can become fearful, reactive or over excited around people or dogs I suggest getting help from a professional trainer who doesn’t use any forms of physical or psychological intimidation to help you create the plan for the set ups and help you find appropriate decoy dogs and people to use.
A link to download the 3 page protocol with illustrations and notes to remember what was said in the video:

I've had so many trainers I've paid to work with try to teach me this. If I'd been able to watch this video first, then work with the trainers, I would have been so much more successful with my reactive dog. She had a great life long life of 16 years, but with this her life would have been even better! Thank you, Emily. This is a great, formative video. The format is really good too.

Well, its a tricky subject. Hard to simplify into a video. It took me weeks to try and talk over the footage and say the right things to simplify it.

@@kikopup Thanks for all your excellent videos. Could you please do a video behavior modification to stop a 6-7 month old rescue dog from chasing and barking at existing house cats? I can imagine similar techniques will be used but since it's harder to gradually increase criteria and also the distraction (cats) is never completely absent.

Amazing video, thank you for making it! and glad to see you back! :-) Since I found it on your website, I've been thinking about how relevant and precious your behavior modification protocol is. If only one was smart and resourceful enough to tailor it to the problems of individual dogs, adding details and apply it. The protocol makes the big picture clear but applying it in practice requires quite a lot of planning and there are subtleties that will mark the difference between success and failure. I'm really happy you are dedicating videos to further elaborate, really in-depth and professionally, on this precious resource.

Thanks yeah, I plan to make more on different specific things. :) Like you and I know how to use it for kids, just replace the decoy dog with a kid, but some people really need to learn by seeing an actual kid not a dog, or a cat not a dog...

Amazing work Emily! A lot of thought and work went into this video and it really shows! The fact that you broke down the whole process into steps while at the same time answering most of the 'If' scenarios makes it even more helpful and foolproof. For the trainer out there this is a mental shortcut while for the dog parent it can be a reason to change his/her approach (or trainer). Thanks for this one and for everything else!

If I understand the concept right I can teach my dog pretty much everything using the technic. The first behaviour I would like to start with - is to teach a dog to ignore me touching a paw for cutting nails. This video is so amazing and motivating! Going to start learning it immediately 🙂

This video gave me the motivation to start start working on some of my chi's aggressive behavior around my other dog. For her, one of the triggers is the clicking of nails on the floor. When she hears my other dog coming into the bedroom, she'll leapt up and bark in my other dog's face, sometimes even body slamming her and chasing her away. Maybe I just need to teach her a really strong down-stay, and then really slowly practice walking my other dog in and out of the room... =) Thanks for the ideas!

This is such a wonderful and in depth video, thank you so much! Although, would you happen to have a video to help build drive/ focus in dogs? I have a shelter dog who's drives are really "stunted" from living in the shelter for so long. Eating food seems to be an annoying/ exhausting chore, even when she's super comfortable at home, let alone outside. If she does take treats, she'll either drop it, because it's not worth actually chewing/ eating it, or if she eats it, it's more like a snack rather than a reward, even really good stuff like real meat or meatballs. She's also not interested in toys.

Hey Emily, glad to see you're back! What do you do if the emotional trigger is the environment e.g. the beach.. my dog gets over-aroused when he sees the water and doesn't listen to me when I try and walk past.
@kikopup
@kikopup 2 жыл бұрын
It really depends on why he gets excited by the water, if you write me at dogmanticsstore@gmail.com with the specifics we could come up with a plan. I mean if he's even excited by a kiddie pool, you could work on access to the kiddie pool for calm behavior etc. This tutorial might actually be of more help kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hsyJnb2F18W8lX0.html

Dear Emily! Thank you so much for this protocol with showing all the steps! It was very kind of you! Is it the same method that you use for your dogs staying calm around the chipmunks in your yard? The protocol worked well for my dog with dogs-distraction, but I can’t succeed with cats-distraction. Will be grateful for advice.

Any thoughts on modifying this for triggers you can't always control? Dog that chases cats in the home... dog is fine if the cats are stationary, but gets excited and sometimes over threshold if cats suddenly move...

What should I do if my dog is still only taking treats at home and not outdoors, even when I train during off peak timings with as minimal distraction as I can arrange. I notice he'll chew on the treats and spit it out, unlike at home where he swallows it

Is it okay if the dog chooses to look at your hand/treat pouch instead of eye contact? I'm never sure if this is a less positive outcome, and if we should be prioritizing eye contact over any disconnection.

Dear Emily, we have two border collie/australian shepherd mix brothers, 10-months old who with reactivity issues which we are working on with our really great positive reinforcement trainer. It's tough but we are making progress. The latest huge challenge is that one of our boys has become reactive and extremely aggressive towards the other to the extent that we have to separate them completely. Is there any help you can give us? We are desperate and so very sad about the situation. Our home at least used to be the safe, happy zone for them. I'm just reaching out out of desperation - but I understand if the case is too remote for you to be able to help. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

How could you use this method for something like squirrels that often come out of nowhere and very quickly?

First work without squirrels and get the dog to ignore fast moving other things, such as a toy on a string or a remote controlled car etc.

how to i stop my labradoodle whining at some ungodly hour of the morning?
@kikopup
@kikopup 2 жыл бұрын
Its really hard to know the solution without knowing why he's whining. First you'd need to rule out a medical reason such as a UTI or something like that, then if it was just habit of getting up early and stress about not getting to go out or have breakfast, you could set an alarm and wake up earlier let him out then set the alarm later and later. But it really depends on the situation. If it has to do with separation anxiety if the dog is separated from you then the key would be focusing on that.
@Bob-ru6nw
@Bob-ru6nw 2 жыл бұрын
@@kikopup thanks. He happily goes to sleep in the kitchen, which has access to outside thru doggie door. But he'll just sit at the door whining. I think he is just demanding company or a walk. If I get up to settle him, the quiet doesn't normally last long. Previously he was home alone while we worked. But now we work from home while in lockdown. Puppy (almost 1yo) is happy to sleep most of the day with no attention, or just even play by himself. For some reason it's just 615am. He's not normally a big eater, there's always at least kibble in his bowl. He gets treats when he's calm on his bed during the day.
