Perfectly sums up his biggest issue. He can't cope with people only spending time with him because he uses his powers. The one thing that would probably make him happy is him telling someone to do something and they CHOSE to do it because they like him. But he can't have that, so he deludes himself into thinking that people he controls ACTUALLY want it. Which then turns people even further away from him, putting him in a self-caused cycle of destruction to himself and everyone he comes into contact with. Sociopath and rapist mentality in one. Along with that superpower of his the most terrifying combination.

The thing I like about Jessica jones is the fact before all of this craziness she'd kicked ass but after meeting killgrave her life literally was shit it goes to show that in many tv shows movies SVU that a scene between two people can show that "yeah I confronted the man that raped me" rather then see a revenge torture porn scene it goes to show that Jessica Jones can be more then a superhero show it can literally be real and talk about the ugliness and monstrous acts of sex crimes.

It also shows how much denial he's in over the consequences of his actions, which is actually very typical of real abusive people. People who can't admit to their misdeeds or really feel terrible about them are truly evil and heartless.

Most men will admit to rape if you use the term "forced sex." Made me think of that too. Men who rape view sex as something you do to someone.

This show was full of great scenes and moments, but I think this one encapsulates the strength of it more than anything. Because it gives an unflinching, brutally honest look at the rapists and abusers of the world, and why something that should be considered heinous and off-limits is so damn common in our society. Kilgrave, like many abusers, doesn't *think* he was hurting his victim or doing anything wrong. He's convinced himself that he was just making Jessica happy and showing how much he loves her. But it's not real love; it's the twisted, unhealthy version that's better known as "obsession". Putting your own needs above those of the person you supposedly love, so you must have them even against their will. And the belief that even if they say no, you just need to "win them over", be it with threats, violence, or in this case, mind control. We need more shows, and more heroines, like Jessica Jones.

This was one of the best scenes of JESSICA JONES! I love how this show, unlike so many others we have received, is able to discuss serious issues like rape and PTSD, and treat them with the respect and maturity that they deserve. Using these serious issues to explore the physical and psychological implications and consequences caused by issues is how you tell a story like this correctly, whereas most books and movies would use issues like rape and PTSD for simple shock value or as a plot-device.

And the most notable part? It never shows the rapes themselves. They're discussed, but you never see them; every sex scene shown is consensual between all parties involved. The only rape shown is psychological, when Kilgrave is controlling people.

I agree with every point you made in this comment. I really wish that people would be willing to discuss these kinds of issues without hesitation as easily as this scene in this show does. I understand that the topic of rape is disturbing and uncomfortable, but we can't just ignore it or keep quiet about it. Not saying anything about it or trying to hide from it isn't going to help prevent it from continueing to happen, and it's not going to change the fact that it has happened to people.

I really liked this scene. It's not trying to make us feel sorry for Kilgrave, just show things from his point of view and give a bit of explanation. Obviously he did a lot of terrible things that can't be forgiven, and his childhood is no excuse for that, but it would also take a toll on you to never know if anyone is doing something because they want to or if you told them to. After a while you'd probably just force yourself to lose whatever moral compass you have just so you could deal with it.
@hunter17835

True enough. When you grow up with the ability to make everyone do whatever you tell them to (whether you actually want them to or not), well it would be damn near impossible to grow up into anything other than a sociopath. As you said, it's not an actual excuse, but it would be understandable for something like that to happen.

It would definitely be very difficult not to become used to people obeying your commands and feeling like it's right, but there are people with all sorts of mental conditions that compel them to commit crimes (such as kleptomania) and we don't let them off the hook. He could've chosen to get help, but he didn't. So while I like the fact that the show tried to give us a window into Kilgrave's mind and understand the twisted way he came to view the world and therefore his behavior, it drives me bananas when I see people say "but Jessica could've helped him change and become a hero... instead she chose revenge". WTF? She chose to try to help Hope and countless other future victims of Kilgrave's, rather than the monster who did all those things.

@@Fenrize The problem is that here the situation is too twisted to actually be seen as positive. Kilgrave is a serial rapist, Jessica is his victim who was traumatized by his actions. Just because they have a good dybamic does not mean they're shipping material for young thirsty girls who can't see the vileness of it all. This isn't some cartoon villain who got brainwashed or has a soft side. The man raped Jessica, stalks her and manipulates people around her so he can be the only one for her. It's not romantic in any way, it's cruel and evil.

@@bananatiergod Read my comment again. I never said there was anything positive about their relationship in the series. And when did I say there was something romantic about them? I never did. And as I said, every ship isn't always necessarily a happy perfect one nor does it need to be. It doesn't mean every shipper think that relationships are meant to work that way or that they don't think there's nothing wrong with it and if they do, well, that's surely a problem. But in the end, it's entertainment. The characters aren't real and there's no actual people getting hurt.

His powers are quite complicated. I've seen multiple instances where he didn't exactly use imperative forms and his victims still did what he wanted. When even the question "would you like to get dinner with me" can turn into a command, which the victim then follows, I can imagine how hard it must be to form any kind of normal relationship with someone. Ironically, the only way to "create" an immune person is, as he did with Jessica, keep them around for quite a while. Could happen through daily meetings. When they're immune, he can begin to form the desired relationship.

Ok knowing that killgrave got his powers as a kid makes him turning into a psychopath more understandable, doesn't excuse anything, but understandable. In my opinion, the time when you are a child is where your morals are built. While they can change over time, if nothing is done to help change those morals then they will likely cement themselves. Gaining those powers at a young age is the worst possible time for it as that power will (in all likelihood) corrupt the kid, as he'd get whatever he wants when he wants. He wants a toy? He'll get it, h wants a game? He'll get it, if he wants candy or treats, he'll get them since no one can say no to him thanks to his powers. And it'll get worse as he becomes a teen/young adult. By that point he knows he'll get whatever he wants, and he'll start abusing his power even more. Force good grades, relationships, possibly drugs, etc, and once hormones start up, then you can guess what would happen, and he'd get away with it since if anyone reported him, he'd simply order his way out. By the time he becomes and adult, you have killgrave. Meanwhile if an adult inherits this ability, depending on how they were raised it could go either way. The adult could abuse his powers and become as bad as killgrave, maybe worse, or he could use his powers for good (like how Jessica tried to get killgrave to do), and probably abuse them every once and a while (since no one is 100% perfect). Course there's option C where the stress from having to be careful of ever little word/expression (or else "I once told a man to go screw himself. Can you even imagine " happens) breaks him and he locks himself away in total isolation.

Oh, the five-star hotels bit... Like that makes any difference when you force sex out of her after, dude! Even Jessica was shaking her head there! Though, on the 'oh you have no idea' thing, I find it somewhat telling that he said the same thing to the guy he bought the house from, even though that guy had no clue who he was or what he could do. Either that's how he justifies it to himself, or he really did have problems with his own powers and gave up trying after a while (not counting torturing his parents as a kid; that was more childish revenge gone nuts and probably didn't help his later attitude at all). Doesn't justify anything he did, but it does explain a lot.

Not justifying what he did or does in the slightest, but his rational seems more solid than you'd think. As he mentions, he DOES have to painstakingly control every word he says in order to give people around him free will, because his only control with making people do what he wants is whether or not he says the words. Jokingly, I tell my friends stupid shit all the time just because we find it funny, so it would genuinely be hard not to give people accidental commands your whole life. Maybe they went out for dinner and, in his narcissistic delusion, he assumed that he was simply being really charming and sweet so he thought she wanted to have sex with him. It's hard for narcissists to tell, in fact, because they always assume that they're right. Again, not justifying the shitty stuff he does, but it's like his superpower actively discourages him from being good.

@Aaron Neville And you think that Kilgrave knew any of that. They never told him they were trying to help him, they just started sticking needles in his head. You seriously think he'd be this insane if he knew they were trying to help him. You're the one whose not to bright by making baseless assumptions.

It isn't a crime of anger either, it is a crime of violence, in an sexual context. Many rapist feel passion for their victims. Doesn't change a thing, it is still rape.

Any expert in law enforcement or social work who specializes in this sort of thing will tell you that rape is about control and violence, which is precisely what is happening here. Even if a victim submits or seems to submit to what is happening it does not mean that they want it. This was absolutely rape because the victim did not have ability to say no. No matter what killgrave's intentions or feelings were while he was doing it, he still raped her. Doesn't matter what the perpetrators' mindset is if the victim cannot give true consent without fear.
