The Bride (Uma Thurman) takes on O-Ren Ishii's mace-wielding henchwoman, Gogo Yubari (Chiaki Kuriyami).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Perhaps the most highly anticipated film of 2003, Kill Bill Vol. 1 marked the return of renowned filmmaker Quentin Tarantino after a six-year hiatus. Re-teaming the director with Uma Thurman for the first time since 1994's Pulp Fiction, the film was originally the first half of what was to be a three-hour-plus movie before being split into two films. Thurman stars as The Bride, one-fifth of a team of assassins called DiVAS. When The Bride opts to leave the outfit for a life of marital bliss, it doesn't sit well with her boss, Bill (David Carradine), so he has her former cohorts, played by Lucy Liu, Vivica A. Fox, Daryl Hannah, and Michael Madsen, show up at the nuptials, leaving behind a blood bath. Miraculously, The Bride survives a bullet to the head and, four years later, she sets out for revenge against her four assassins and their employer. The story is concluded in Kill Bill Vol. 2, released six months later.

i still think the bride was challenged the most here. She knew the other members she was after, but gogo was a wild card and i think the bride was caught off guard a bit.

Gogo's ego got her killed. She had two good chances to put an end to the Bride, but she decided to play games with her. Good fighters don't waste time to put an end to their opponents.

Actually it was pretty strategic for her to play games, She focuses on disarming the opponent then goes attacking, When her attack plan kinda fails she goes confusing her with some moves like the head spin and the leg rotation, Think about it : You're someone who focuses on a different weapon than hers, so you don't really know what will happen or how to block it, you wouldn't really know what she will try to do because the weapon is very unpredictable same goes with her techniques, : And pretty much she got killed (aside from the fact shes not the main character) because the area wasn't clear enough, if she (Gogo) focused less on the opponent for a second and looked at the area for any potential harm (like the wooden leg) she could've killed Bea.

jamesrei I agree. I get the sense that gogo had a lot of training but didn't have much experience in uncontrolled environments. The advantage Beatriz had was experience in fighting using her surroundings which gogo obviously did not. Every successful defense and offense by beatriz was done using her surroundings which gogo wasn't paying attention to. The difference was experience not skill or arrogance.

Still though, Gogo's chains should have cracked her windpipe and left her without the thought of using the environment to her advantage. Gogo was pulling that chain too hard for her to even last a second being choked out

Fun fact: The actress who played Gogo accidentally hit Tarantino in the head with that weapon while he was standing next to a camera. He probably didn't really feel it considering how high he is all the time.

I know its 1 year late but it was made out of hard styrofoam and plastic, The styrofoam is hard doesn't feel like much but the plastic (spikes/outer layer) can hurt a bit :)

Compared to Black mamba though, not really. This scene was pretty ridiculous in the fact that Gogo lasted as long as she did. It was basically just to show off how brutal that weapon was and show that Black mamba isn't completely unstoppable. The only scenario where it would make sense for Black Mamba to be beaten is if she was fighting another student of Pai Mei, because basically anyone who learns from him can't be beaten by any other opponent.

For those of you who say that gogo's ego got her killed, and she was wrong to show off, maybe i can explain her actions. The weapon she uses is called a meteor hammer. Though it usually uses rope ratger than chain, and the spikes are superfluous. The spins and kicks gogo does during the scene are actually standard practice and essential to maintain the ball in motion to deliver a precise strike. Even the move around the neck serves the practical purpose of changing which direction the ball travels in, which is difficult considering the centrifugal force generated by the rotation, which counteracts perpendicular rotation. The hits she got on the bride were solid, and should have killed her. Frankly, the only reason gogo didn't win this fight is because her opponent had plot armor. Source: i own a meteor hammer.

+Gabriel Pezzi That's what I like about it. This was a cat-and-mouse fight between two skilled opponents where the tiniest mistake could get someone killed. Plus -- for what it's worth -- GoGo was still an underling (a sub-boss, if you will.) She had an appropriate death for her rank.

I love how Gogo is cute and deadly, the schoolgirl outfit makes her look innocent in contrast with her intimidating weapon. But in the entire fight as she jumps and moves, the shots are carefully done and edited so she's not sexualize in any way by showing her underwear. So focus is on the fight at all times. Tarantino's attention to detail is superb. 👌

Maybe I'm just morbid, but I always think that the best characters deserve horrible, agonizing deaths, and I don't exactly mean deserve as in because they're bad people, I think this way with good guys, too - I think of it in a way, like, 'this character was really great, lets put lots of effort into killing them.'

What Gogo is using is a real weapon. It's called a meteor hammer. It comes from ancient China. Even when Tarantino is supposed to be thinking about Kurosawa, he keeps going back to those old Hong Kong kung fu movies, I guess.

All chain weapons are designed to circumvent shields or heavy armor and make traditional defensive moves pointless. Using them against a nimble, unarmored sword fighter still isn't wise.

KILL BILL is the ANTI-Pulp Fiction. Instead of through dialogue, characters speak through their facial expressions. This scene is a perfect example. You can tell what The Bride and Gogo are thinking just be looking at their facial tics and reactions throughout this entire scene. And not a couple of bad faces to look at either! Lol

+drlee2 Except that Kill Bill Vol. 2 is FILLED with dialogue… And Vol. 1 (in between all the action) still has plenty of exposition? Don't get me wrong, I enjoy all the “facial” acting, but calling it the “ANTI-Pulp Fiction” oversimplifies how epic the film is as an homage to classic cinema.

+darkominem I don't put Vol. 2 with Vol 1. I think of them as separate films. Volume 2 is filled with dialogue, but it's too expository and isn't as memorable as the words in Pulp Fiction. Just comparing Kill Bill Volume ONE with Pulp Fiction, I think Tarantino went opposite approach to filmmaking. KB1 is all about characters expressing themselves through their visage, while PF you discover about the characters through dialogue.

Gogo was the only one who dominates Beatrix,almost broke her neck. But,she approached to close,allowing Beatrix to take that plank and hit her in the foot,right to her toes! Gogo just started crying and moaning in pain while Beatrix hit her in the head,killing her instantly.

Hamza Khaliq She had a meteor hammer... a ball of metal (usually copper) attached to a metal chain which was at least 2 meters, and Uma has a sword around 1 meter (not including the bit you hold)...

well.. the ball bounced back from the pillar.. so it wont have that much energy when hitting directly... but other than that: a kill bill movie is meant to be over the top and non-realistic.. and thats why its great and entertaining. its a martial arts fantasy action movie.

I agree. I think they wanted to kill bill quickly and let it be done. The closure is in the final dialogue between Beatriz and Bill. I agree that they shouldn't have Bill and the bride in a long, full out fight scene

After 3 days of heavy drinking I had a nightmare where Gogo was chasing me with that chained wrecking ball. She killed brutally (like in Mortal Kombat's fatalities) all the people who were unlucky to be in her way and I was running for my life. Then she finally caught me and then she (believe it or not) stripped her clothes. And like this wasn't plot twist enough she happened to be transvestite! Then I woke up and decided not to drink alcohol anymore.

To be honest, I always thought Gogo had her dead to rights a couple times. First, Gogo was only toying with her, allowing her to get up after the strike that knocked the Bride on her back, when she could have followed up and finished the fight right there. Secondly, towards the end, the Bride is obviously very resorceful and clever, but it was still luck that a weapon long and lethal enough to kill Gogo ended up near enough to reach: if it wasn't for the debris from the table nearby, it's lights out for the Bride. Always a great fight to see, and one of the neat things about this movie: most enemies are not mindless ragdoll minions to be bested with a quip and a smile, but dangerous opponents to be wary of.

It was intentional. Several scenes (such as O-ren killing her own underboss) were shot to make it look like anime. I am still saddened Tarantino didn't put out a short anime series on Gogo or O-ren. I would love to see such a series come out.

I swear when I Was little, after Uma the bride "nailed" gogo, I was like you see that look in her face that she basically killed a kid and now it's hitting her. I was low key sad that she had to kill gogo because she isn't even a adult yet and she was killed so she can protect her empress

In my opinion, I felt like if Beatrix really wanted to, she could've ended everybody with the exploding heart technique instead of wasting time with swordplay and whatnot with O'ren, Gogo, etc. But I feel like she chooses to holds back for some reason

Gogo really held her own. Beatrix is insane to a degree in her pursuit of revenge because she hasn't anything left to lose. Gogo matching in insanity and seeing the chess match between the two is pure art.

This scene might won for Best Fight Category in MTV Movie Awards 2004, but I bet it's harder for actress Chiaki Kuriyama to play Gogo who must learn how to be able to swing/fling and fight using the soft-but-deadly weapon, Meteor Hammer, than Uma as The Bride with katana... And I think, this The Bride vs Gogo fight scene gives more thrill than The Bride vs Gogo's mistress, O-Ren Ishii...
