Yes, KILL la KILL is a dumb and horny action anime about skimpy battle uniforms. But it's also an amazingly relevant coming-of-age tale, and its message changed my life. Let's go naked.

I think an important thing to note in Kill la Kill is also that the villains are dressed in traditional "pure and good" color schemes, whites and pastels (especially Nui and Ragyo) while our protagonist is in traditionally edgy/goth/evil colors of red and black, even incorporating horns into the design. I think that's an interesting subversion, orrr maybe even an allegory for how "traditionally/widely accepted" should not always mean "good/beneficial"? ... I don't know, I just fuckin love Ryuko and Tsumugu's style and think counter-culture fashion is great.

I don't know if that's necessarily the idea here. A very obvious connection to me is that Ryuko and Satsuki have a clear Red Oni/Blue Oni dynamic. This harkens to a classic Japanese story that gets often referenced in anime, and the idea there is that Red = Passionate and Instinctual, Blue = Cool and Rational. A very famous example of this symbolism being referenced is in the auras and clothing of Goku and Vegeta during their first battle in Dragon Ball Z.

The thing about fascism, is its authority guised in the greater good. The quote of "the road to hell is paved in good intentions" comes to play here. The people didnt just hate Jews, they were put towards the ideology that the removal of the Jews was for the betterment of the collective. If you ask me this reminds me of the movement happening rn in america. Were the idea of bettering the human by getting rid of the "bigot, racist, and white supremacist" will better theworld, even if you have to kill, ruin the life of, other people just like you.

People like to think that fascist regimes just started out hateful, but that's not the real truth. They slowly pushed thierbpopulation towards destabilization of thier government, and against the "other" were pushed to turn them into the government, for thier existance in the society would allow for the slow degradation of society. The irony is that fascism is leftism through and through. They are collectivists, they demand that everyone be the same, you're either with them or against them. Its identitarian to the highest degree. The irony is that to little people see the similarities of the fascist ideal and the identity politics of today.

Honestly when I saw KLK when I was 12 yeah the nudity got me first but after like two episodes I almost forgot about the sexual aspects of the bodies. The constant nudity made me comfortable in a weird way seeing their bodies to the point where I liked looking at the hair and eyes more than the breast and abs. The only time I would remember it was sexual was when someone else came in the room.

Absolutely amazing work, man. So proud to be a tiny part of it. I feel like, in some ways, that works like this, which apply a critical lens to a work of art and not just analyze and decipher meaning, but transform it into something new with an identity of its own -- like how you distilled the powerful & empowering message "Get Naked for Freedom" from Kill La Kill -- really help immortalizing art beyond its mere... value measured in financial success. There are so many tiny things I'd love to comment on in this video essay, small and big, but I think the most important bit is that this really made me cloudy-eyed and left me with genuine fire and passion. This resonated with me and I know it will resonate with so many other people out there. There's a project that I've been pushing and postponing for years now that's dear to my heart, but that I kept having shameful inhibitions about for the very same reasons you put front and center in this essay. Your message was so bold, brave, powerful and encouraging -- and stunningly executed that it really, finally gave me that push I needed to finally pursue it without excuses. So thanks man, this was truly beautiful.

Anime is a more genius medium than most people given its credit for even from its fans. Those criticize its sex appeal fan serve and those cherish specifically for that part of this media are both immature in their world view. Anime bundle its message with explicit and implicit symbolism in sex has formed the most powerful narrative in pop culture. It lowers all guard within a psyche without the affected individual realizing the transformation in their own mind. The elaborate magic transformation sequence widely adopted in anime is a powerful technique in subliminal messaging, anime character changes cloth in bold and stupidly beautiful sequences is a signal to subconscious of the viewer to lower its own defenses and accept the message. Consumers of the media for the most part will not immediately realize what the idea the been told, but those implants are being delivered will activate when specific condition triggers its response, usually a key that deciphers the things been delivered without knowing. Video essay like this is one of such a key.

I'm intersex (though with more than one very rare intersex condition(s)), and I think it was really cool that you talked about how this affected you at the end. I kinda choked earlier in the video at the idea of Going Naked. I'm naked in my worst nightmares, and not the kind of "everyone can see my sexy parts" shame that we all experience to some degree, but that unique shame that's inherent to having a very, very non-normative set of genitals and my body in general, that I know I would not be ogled for -- except by rare fetishists -- but be harshly derided and devalued and mocked for. It is incredibly hard, and I'm glad (and somewhat cathartically relieved?) that you talked about this. Going naked, whether metaphorical or not, is horrifying for me, even though I don't want it to be. I like the defiance you pointed out here; feels intense, and a little sorrowful, but ultimately needed in a profound way. She had finally avenged his death, and yet Senketsu also had to leave her now, the last remains her father left to her. But this time, she won't be alone to face the world. She won't need to put up walls to protect herself or make up excuses for not opening her heart. Her friends would be there for her, people that love her, she doesn't need to cling to her father's ghost as her sole company anymore. It hits so hard...

I just wanted to say, I return to this video pretty consistently as it really gets to the core of what makes KLK such a special show. I love to see sexual/nude imagery celebrated, as it's central to our identities and because of that, I despise how it's often framed as shameful. I love that KLK not only says "we should not be ashamed of who we are", but also demonstrates that this rejection of shame can be used as a tool to fight against the societal/systemic pressures that prevented people from accepting themselves to begin with. @@mikeyua7 It doesn't matter what the author's intended meaning was, what matters is the audience's interpretation of the work. @@kindredspirit9703 For how big of a point of discussion "Death of the Author" is , I never fully accepted it. The intention of the author matters, as it influences how the work of art actually came to be and makes it different in practical terms from the same exact plot and characters written by a different person. And humans, all of us regardless of age and ideas, are animals with a strong pattern detection brain. We lived through millenia by seeing things and filling the gaps we couldn't see/understand with what we previously know. It's obvious thus that people will often end up projecting their personal bias unto a work of art, missing something or just ignoring it to enforce their PoV. I believe that, as always, the answer lies in a more moderate and thoughtful approach (which is also how KLK turns out to be at the end, isn't it?). We must read into art and fiction in our own way, but this must be done with a critical and serious approach. There is no point in just speaking of what we see in something, if this isn't viewed by most people and the author, if we are just putting our identity of the art, for whatever reason we may do so. For a discussion and for art to be meaningful, they must be a point of connection with people, both other viewers/readers/whatever and the artists trying to give out their original thoughts and perspective through something a bit more material than a speech or a treaty of phylosophy. The guy you answered to is an example of someone not searching a discussion, but just throwing his personal bias and ideas unto something, without engaging with it, just in a negative rather than positive. This behaviour doesn't do anything useful, it doesn't contribute to anything. And indeed KLK carries such themes of antifascism and body/sex/identity positivity or whatever else on that line of acceptance of the self. It's crystal clear and the author made it explicit in the series.
@kindredspirit9703
@kindredspirit9703 3 жыл бұрын
@@Hyperversum3 Your interpretation of Death of the Author seems fairly accurate and defensible. However, communication is a two way street. Valuing the perspective and intentions of an author more than the interpretation of the audience can lead towards the philosophy that the communication skills of the Author don't matter. I think that if the author is consistently "misinterpreted" then they failed at communicating, not the audience. I don't think this is an issue that comes up in KLK though, since most viewers come to similar conclusions about its message if they believe it has a message at all.
@Hyperversum3
@Hyperversum3 3 жыл бұрын
@@kindredspirit9703 Oh that's for sure. It's not like I disagree with what you said right now, it's just that the intent of the author matters, if they feel the need to explain it better outside of the work... well, it means that they failed to do what they wanted somewhere. That's different from a work where the message is clear but some reader/viewer may fail to get it. And all of us are liable to miss something here and there, or maybe we fail to grasp something about a specific work for some other reason. The communication skills of an author are essential indeed, but that doesn't change that you will inevitably see someone saying the opposite of a clear message or denying that the work has any substance at all, even the best authors will suffer a small amount of people ready to throw trash and shit at their general direction, no matter what. On a different medium, people to this fail to understand 1984, just as an example lol.

before watching this video, I had no interest in watching Kill La Kill. like most people, I thought it was a fetishistic show whose main thing was portraying young girls in revealing (if any) clothing just for the voyeuristic pleasure of a mostly male audience. but, after watching this, I want to check out the show for myself, and to see developed female characters embracing their bodies without shame, which is something you don't really see anywhere. as a feminine person who is into socialism and anarchy myself, I like the idea of embracing nakedness and clothing as a political statement, and seeing that a mostly-male studio was able to show this off while getting a lot of people to see it is actually pretty heart-warming in a way. so, this is just a long-winded way of saying thank you. without this, I probably wouldn't have thought twice about this show, or about the message behind it. I can't wait to see what you make next. now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take off all my clothes and punch nazis in the face.

Really liked your essay. I fell in love with this anime some years ago. Fleshed out themes and characters seem so rare these days. There is however one thing, that still bothers me, and that is the display of fanservice in the framework of sexual harassment. When the Mankanshoku family is introduced, we see the dad of the family lying on top of Ryuko, while she is unconcious. Later, Dad and son try repeatedly (if i remember correctly) to spy on her while she is in the bathroom. Although Ryuko complains about that, they are never really called out for this. The Mankanshoku's are presented as a sometimes dumb, but lovable family. When they become rich and abandon each other, Ryuko lies in the bathtub and longingly stares into the camera, as if she misses being spied on. And this is what bothers me. Being harassed by family members (i count them as her family since she has nobody else and lives with them) as a minor is not something you can laugh off, it is disturbing and creepy. You meet a random pervert maybe once, but you encounter your family every single day, since you can't provide for yourself yet. Having them disrespect your privacy and literally telling you that they want to fuck you is not some dumb, but lovable character trait. It's terrifying. And what's really weird is that they aren't completely incapable of presenting sexual harassment by family members in a reasonable tone. Apart from the bathtub scene, which is also questionable in my opinion, we do get the feeling how awful it is for Satsuki to be groped by her own mother. We - the audience - can grasp how evil she is. But not with the Mankanshoku family. They remain unchallenged for what they have done. Again, i really like Kill la Kill. But i wish anime directors would stop presenting harassment like this. I am completely fine with sexual harassment as a theme itself, but not in this "it's just a funny habit men just happen to have" kind of way. I don't want to shame people for finding Ryuko attractive. But disrespecting people's boundaries, especially as a parent, should be called out. This stuff is what's preventing me from watching Boku no Hero Academia (and similar shonen anime). I have been told that this show also has this fanservice scenes where some dude spies on the girls bathing, and i just don't want to see that anymore. And this is sad, because i really believe people that this show has cool action scenes and themes and whatnot. Thanks for reading my little rant, have a nice day

I struggle with the same thing -- I've been a lifelong fan of anime, but it's impossible to ignore the casual and dismissive attitude around sex harassment you see in many series. It's especially dissonant in Kill la Kill, because the show goes to great lengths to show Ryuko rising above externally-imposed sexualization in the context of the fight scenes, only to undercut it by playing it for laughs with Mako's family. This is something I considered addressing in this video, but I felt like it was already long enough, and there was no way to address the topic without adding another 15 minutes to the runtime. Personally, I suppose I'm willing to cut the show some slack for this, since it handles sexuality so well in every other respect. But you're right, it's still gross, and it never gets any easier to watch. Taken as a complete work, I think KLK succeeds at subverting and rising above just about every other trope of shonen-anime. But in this case, it's an example of the show wanting to have its cake and eat it too -- there's no deconstruction or recontextualization happening here, just the straightforward use of a trope for laughs. Thanks for watching the video, and for leaving such a thoughtful comment.

@@SIRKISSHY In the end I think they put those type of tropes and characters because they enjoyed when young and now they can express that themselves in their works now so they just do it. If you look for other of Imaishi works in Gurren Lagaan Kamina is an amazing character that has a perv side(in the end for me made him more human for me),in Panty and Stocking one character is just addict to sex and most of the comedy in that series are bind to that. You talked about My hero Academia the fanservice is very little there is one character that is a perv(and I dont like and I do not find it funny) but I think he is there because the author wanted to put a little of a horny teenage on a series that has a ton of teenages that are not horny in a magazine that is called shonen jump and problaby because when he was a teenage he like female super hero costumes and he wanted to comment that in there and to make it funny he made a character that are that are punished when he talk about it because he knows is a perv thing but he wanted to do it anyway. Maybe is bad or wrong in the view of others but in the end that are their works and they are just expressing themselves.

@@MichaelSaba I sort of want to disagree with your statements here. But it's not because I like any of the pervy stuff. On the opposite, it makes my stomach churn. It makes me feel uncomfortable and awkward. And that gives me a very strong feeling that there is more to it. I live in a society that, I believe, is somewhere halfway into becoming what modern western society is. And sex here is percieved in a very mixed way. Seeing people who would be the pervy guys and at the same time people who would love to put the former in jail for such "transgressions" make me truly wonder, who here is actually right. But this is a very layered topic about which, I think I cannot get into it right now. To be completely honest, this video touched me in a place I never quite realized was there, so atm I feel properly shook and disturbed, but I'll probably try talking to you (and thanking you) sometime in the future when I'm in a more stable state.

I feel like I'm one of the only one of my friends who really loved KLK because of all of this! Many of them see it as just blatant fan service. As a fashion student, I also saw it as commentary on the industry and its lack of moral practices. Things like unfair wages/living conditions for workers, the crazy amount of pollution, and the continuing rise of fast fashion are all massive issues that're poisoning our world (literally and metaphorically.) And unless both consumers and large companies come together to be more aware and change these practices, they're only going to get worse. Thankfully, some big names like H&M are trying to do their part by creating things like large scale textile recycling programs. So if you have any old/ugly/torn clothes or general textiles, you can drop them off at any H&M store and they end up sorting them into over 300 categories to be reused or recycled. Their aim is for

im trans and autistic, so when you brought in your personal experience of being intersex, of being born outside the norm, that really resonated with me. being trans ftm, but also liking feminine clothing (despite the shows message), i always fall to society's uniform gendered sense of fashion. i want to be seen as masculine yet im countered by the view that skirts are for girls. cis feminine men experience invalidation of their gender expression when they dress "feminine", but it feels like there's another layer added when you're trans. because i was "born female", people will doubt i am actually of a masculine identity when i present as the gender i was assigned. it's the reason im not out to my family. being autistic adds another layer to this. i don't think people truly understand the hardships people on the spectrum have to go through, despite the #1 cause of death for autistic people being suicide. people can argue this all they want but being autistic makes you inherently more likely to experience hardship than allistic people. ill just get to sharing my experience with being autistic since technical things can be more confusing and less open to empathy. i was seen as different from the start. i said my first words when i was 4 and even today as a 16 year old struggle with verbal communication. when i was 4 my parents made the unwise decision of only bringing me to one doctor, a doctor who (still) believes autism ruins lives. instead of diagnosing me with autism, he told my parents the diagnosis would ruin my life and instead formally labelled me as someone with anger issues and an iq of 70. ironically, it was the lack of a label that ruined my life, because if i had been told that im autistic, maybe i would have accepted my differences as apart of my disability and my identity instead of trying to figure out what was "wrong" with me. i could've grown up with less of a need for a mask, for a fake identity to be accepted. i grew up in an unstable home which made my life worse. i took anger out on kids at school because no adult in my life would ever help or believe in me. i almost never told teachers about my problems. why? because every time i told them a kid was mistreating me, they somehow found a way to blame me for it. i grew up hating myself and wanting to die because i grew up being everyone's burden. i developed anxiety, very common within people on the spectrum, and i went through trauma that people wouldn't understand unless they were autistic themselves. i didn't even realize it was trauma until i learned about autism and figured out that i have it. i started to stim more, i started feeling less bad about my 'weird' interests, i started to understand why i came off as either boring or violent. boring came form the mask i was wearing, violent came from not being able to take it any more. or sometimes i was viewed as kind, but that wasn't myself either, that was when i learned how to successfully people please. but one day i won't be a people pleaser anymore. as i slowly undo my mask, my false identity created by a neirotypical ableist standard, i will "get naked". as i accept my trans identity and stop invalidating myself due to transphobia, i will "get naked". this video has successfully convinced me to go watch kill la kill tomorrow because the meaning of "get naked" goes further than just taking off your clothes. it extends to being yourself, your true authentic self. whether you're fighting beauty standards, racism, ableism, classism, homophobia, transphobia, sexism, fashion trends, etc, get naked. and of course i do not want to ignore the message of body positivity which i struggle with as well (especially because my parts have a rare thing), don't be ashamed of your bodies either; that is apart of your authentic self. edit like a few seconds after posting this: holy jesus i wrote a lot

My queerness, my gender identity, my politics, my relationship with faith, etc was being tossed back and forth as I led a dual life separate from how my parents wanted me to grow up. This show was such an inspiration for who I ended up becoming as an adult, almost a decade later. Personal freedom, found family, unapologetic expression of identity, sexual liberation, resistance to authority, solidarity with the oppressed; these are all values that I hold dear to my heart. *Enthusiastic, supportive clappin', hootin' 'n' hollerin' from the back of the auditorium.* Yeeeeeeah, Michaeeeeeeeel! Learning how to be true to yourself and still work within the confines of the social structure is so, so difficult. To be groomed into a perfect circle when you know you're not quite that. While I can't talk about the chromosomal state of being that you've related to all your life, I can relate in the way that what makes you different is on the inside. I was diagnosed with ADHD in Grade 4, and for a long time I resented that fact about myself. It meant that I couldn't go to a normal school to facilitate my academic success, or make friends easily, or think normally, or mature the way the rest of my peers would. I've joked that, at 29, I'm now the 23 year old I should have been. I'll always be lagging behind everyone, but not many people will realize that because I'm so good at portraying something that I'm not. It's taken me a long time to wholly feel comfortable with who I am, my strengths and weaknesses and flaws, and start breaking down those walls. I realize that I can be both the professional that I should be while holding my perpetual rose tinted glasses of my child-like wonder and unconditional empathy that my ADHD provides. I refuse to let the world harden me to the point where I don't feel anything anymore, and I wish more people would fight for that. But it only takes one to spark a revolution, right? We both know that.

@@maybemints Actually, there are several benefits related to being nude more often, both to physical and mental health. Your body being able to breathe better, move better and take more sunlight helps a lot when it comes to improving your skin's quality, and also helping the body with a lot of metabolic functions that makes it healthier, including the reduce of stress, hearth attack risks, and even boost of the production of hormones related to the improvement of general psychological health, happiness and life satisfaction. Also, it makes wonders when it comes to personal acceptance and self image, specially when we talk about social nudity, instead of only private. I mean, there are reasons for so many people liking to go to nude beaches, clubs, camps, hikings and so on... But yeah, of course... staying naked under the sun for hours straight would probably be harmful... but we aren't asking anyone to do that either... People still can wear clothes whenever they feel like it, or when it is convenient, we are just saying that being nude more often should also be an option, instead of something to be kept hidden from the world. Also, sunscreen, hats or even some other stuff that could be used as ponchos/capes to protect from the sun also can help a lot, when we are in exclusively nudist environment. to keep it simple, pretty much the same scenarios were one can wear bathing suits or a man can go shirtless, being in the nude shouldn't be a problem.

Hey man I just finished kill la kill and I wanted to say, this video is brilliant and it made me understand a lot of deeper symbolism in the show. Excellent video, and one of the best anime analysis I’ve ever seen.

Every beat of this commentary, hit me on a nigh spiritual level, and the exact sentiment was part of my growth over a few years ago. And cosplaying makeup, dressing up and other things that contrasted from my extremely masculine form and upbringing, help get me out of a dark place and started getting me to reconsile with certain parts of my personal identity that I was never comfortable with. I was a really handsome guy yet I hated how I looked, I knew how to coordinate but I would purposely wear shitty clothes and not take care of my self. And over time I resented myself and other non conformists, I was a terrible person I started getting into conspiracy theories broke ties with alot of my friends and it became clear that the way I acted was a self loathing based on the roles that I felt like I had no control over. That it wouldn't be okay to Express myself, every day it was hammered home that at a minority Male I had to act a certain way or I was as good as dead, that I had to be a certain way. Subtle pressures, the fact that I was named after my dad and was treated as his physical extension and the usual higher- middle class general disdain for any act of protest that turned slightly inconvenient and unsightly made me feel trapped in a body I literally wanted to throw off a bridge. Being able to Express myself to walk around confidently and present in other ways,makeup clothes, nonconformist communities, and building support groups that weren't judgemental saved my goddamm life so thank you for putting this video out there.

wow, this was an excellent find! i was considering writing a dissertation about kill la kill....this just shows how awesome an anime it is. has some conflicting messages but good basis. This was stunning, I love the messages concerning freedom; stripping naked of all the labels and restrictions to form true unity in a diverse society.... very good anime! ^^

Hey Michael. That video was amazing! I knew about a few of the concepts around Kill la Kill, but this video essay, that was amazing! It opened my eyes to so many aspects and widened my horrizon, as cheesy as that may sound. So, I already shared this video with a friend who is a great Kill la Kill fan and I bet that she will enjoy this even more then I did. And the personal note at the end: thumbs up for accepting yourself and finding your way. As always in life, no door closes without opening another one and you got my best wishes for your future, where ever it may take you. Till next time ;)

In general I love this show for being over the top, badass, yet loveable and charming, due to the characters. But if I wanna get deep, my personal takeaway from KLK is that your actions and desires don't have to make sense. However, there is beauty in that uncertainty/craziness. This helped pull me out of a dark place where I'd overthink myself away from doing the things I genuinely wanted to do, to not waste my time due to anxiety. There are parts of me I can't explain, but damn me if I let that stop me from taking action towards fulfilling my true self! Even as I write this I feel that this paragraph may sound confusing but I don't know how else to express it. DON'T LOSE YOUR WAYYYYY!!!

I said this in another one of your vids, but I’m digging your taste in music - or art. NIN soundtracks being hidden in your vids makes them even better than they already are. Good job dude.

My body and mentality was alot like yours when I was growing up. (I deeply connect and feel for you) However My story diverges: My doctors saw it as a problem and gave me powerful hormone medication to force on me the "Normal masculine traits".... I Am now 6-1,huge bones, hands, feet, hard sharp facial features and hair all over my body. I look more like a man then most now.... This had made my adult life extremely horrendous, especially now that I know I was a woman born in this disgusting perverse form. Word's can not describe how wronged I was by the people trying to "help me".

I love how you narrated the story and analysed its many aspects despite how most would have view this anime. I love this anime because of its story and comedy, discovering that it has a deeper meaning made me love it even more despite that it's kinda disturbing. Also no need to feel bad, from a general subjective view you may look kinda dark and depressive but you actually look fabulous ❤
