There is a lot of blood and quite a few plot twists and drama in it. It may be layered by the humor and hyperactiveness of the characters, but I think it's worth watching.

There's also I guess a bit of mystery regarding Ryuko's father and stuff, and quite a few plot twists in the later half of the series. The story actually gets quite deep, and even a lot of the side characters are well-developed. And if you want to dig a bit deeper into the symbolism and metaphors in the show you may find some more to it.
