We are installing a kill switch on the Stratocaster! I used this same mod on multiple Strats going back years and today we are doing it again to my recent build from a few months back.
You'll find the needed links for the switch and also for Bonser Instruments in the comments. Enjoy and have a lovely day filled with music.
Be sure to use the switch with the black button! The same model with red has a static "on" design while the black is an open circuit in the static position. Installation of the Red will result in the guitar only transmitting while the button is pressed!

Ouch. I would not make a hole there. Anywhere on a pickguard but not in the body. Brave move 👌

Very cool video. Planning on making a kill switch in my Squier HSS strat for expanding my guitar mod skills, but afraid to drill in the body though. Probably in the future I'm ready to make a kill switch in my Tom Morello Telecaster replica guitar. Subscribed btw ✅

Hell yea Robinho, Morello is a big influence on my playing. That guy is a killer. And don't sweat being nervy about drilling, I get the same way and I've been doing it for 35 years! Being a bit nervous means you are concerned for quality. Nothing wrong there. Thanks for subbing and glad you dug it! Welcome!

@@breilly66 Tom Morello is great and one of my inspirations just like Billie Joe Armstrong, Buddy Holly, Stevie Ray Vaughan and especially John Frusciante. Thanks for your kind words. That's a great way of thinking and it helps me to start drilling in my guitar. And it's true because I'm very happy and cautious with my guitars, even with this old Squier HSS Strat which i don't use a lot at this moment. Btw i soon will upload a RATM cover with my Tom Morello Telecaster for the first time

I watched the video, still don't understand why you would go to that much trouble to rout out the guitar body when you could just mount it under the pickguard. But whatever works for you.

What a great video. I would never have thought to install a killswitch at that particular location on a strat. I’m planning on adding one at some point to my squier super sonic that I’ve been modding bit by bit. I’m thinking about adding more of an arcade style button. When it comes to wiring it up, can you just attach each wire to a different terminal on the output jack? I appreciate that message at the end too. Glad this strat is scratching that itch
@breilly66
@breilly66 2 жыл бұрын
Cheers Ramiro! The arcade idea is killer! Especially as the SS has a properly strong color palette selection. Not exactly the same old stuff. As far as the wiring, yep you got it. Just solder into the two tabs on the jack. Also, polarity doesn't matter as the switch is reversible. What you thinking as far as the switch plate? Maybe a flying v plate? Perhaps nickel?
@ramsilva
@ramsilva 2 жыл бұрын
@@breilly66 To me the switching options on the SS are counterintuitive. I think the neck position activates the bridge pickup and vice versa. There’s also something I don’t fully understand going on with the volume knobs where if you have the bridge pickup selected and turn down the neck pickup volume knob it still affects the bridge pickup. And I think the same applies to when the neck pickup is selected. I love the overall quirkiness and non-conformity of the guitar and especially its body size and neck profile but I haven’t thought of a practical use for the stock configuration. All that to say that I’m eventually going to try something similar to what Ryan from 60 Cycle Hum did to his SS: The killswitch will replace the original pickup selector switch and, if I can find guidance on how to wire it, I’ll replace a volume pot with a 5 or 6 way selector knob wired with different pickup configurations. To finally answer your question, since I’ll be replacing the current pickup switch, I should be able to just mount the killswitch on the pickguard with no additional plate. If you have or can get your hands on one of the recent Squier Super Sonics, I’d love to hear your take on the current pickup/switching configuration. Or if you don’t feel like buying one, I can lend you mine for as long as you need to get a feel for it.

@@ramsilva Had the same experience with a modified back top Jazz a few years ago. Was thinking of ordering one up to see what the fuss is about. Could be a good review! Especially as the market gets bolder with its steps into alternatives. Luckily, the world isn't just for LPs and strats anymore. Let me see what I can dig up. 🙌

I feel your pain on the stolen guitar bro. My first real guitar was stolen from me, I had a few cheapy guitars before it, but then I saved up for almost a year to buy a Hammer Chaperal Elite (very nice USA made shred guitar with active pickups and a sustainianc). This was back in the 90's and I have not been able to replace it since. They are super rare and one in good shape today can fetch up to $5K. I think about "her", all the damn time :(

Yea, it sucks. But.... maybe one day I feel like those rigs will maybe come back into view price wise. At least, I know I still stop and look close when I see something bearing a resemblance to my old guitar. A little part thinking I'll see it again waiting for me on some forgotten shelf. One can hope. :)

cool video, thoughts on rosewood fretboard darkening with stains?
@breilly66
@breilly66 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks J! Glad you said so. I've been messing with Minwax as a possible to tint the fretboard. They sell an ebony shade that is pretty close. I think I may actually try it on the 65 Jaguar as the fretboard on that saw some sun and is lighter in color than typically would be seen. Only concern? Will it prevent the fretboard oil I use from being effectively absorbed. Methinks it's time to see what takes.

I haven't but now that I'm looking online, the quality looks way higher than what Febder provides in the same price point. Especially the bridge on the T7. Just that the wattage and draw are designed to carry a potentially lethal current instead of a passive signal. So the overbuilt unit isn't failure prone the way a purpose built kill switch would be. Think of using a tank instead of a plow.
