Shot July 29-31st 2013 Drove up on the last Sunday in July. Car camped then got an 8AM Monday July 29th start on the trail. I did it in 3 days 2 nights finishing just after 4PM Wednesday. I had good weather and passed 12 people in total on the trail. I had great weather, but the trail is very rugged. As for car camping, there is not much there, some basic sites, decent privacy and one beach with the sand not being of great quality. You have to get back country to really see this park.

Love all of these videos you post. I like that you take the extra time to document this stuff and give some insight into what's involved. I'm a hiker from Hamilton Ontario who's spoiled by the trails here but definitely looking for trips like this one. Keep up the awesome videos.

Hey Alex, Another Camper from Hamilton here. I just finished the La Cloche today with a group of friends. We did it in 5 days. It was one of the tougher trails I have done. I do think I would have been able to do it a bit faster but nowhere near as quick as you! you killed the last day. I had your 3 day accomplishment in mind every time that marker was going up another hill and I needed a break. Cheers!

Hello Alex, Great job on the Killarney loop. Really enjoyed the video as well. I was hoping to download your GPS coordinates. Is that possible or can you let me know if they are available? I'm planning a three day trip early October and thought the GPS would help my navigation ie. minimize my effort by avoiding wrong turns...:). Jason

Thanks. You wont be able to download them off the sport trackers apps website which I have the links too unless its your own account. That being said I can just download them myself as a .gpx file and send them to you in an email tonight. Sent me an email at alexjohnsonmeyer@gmail.com The trail is really well marked but if your alone there is a chance you might miss the odd marker without the help of others working with you as a team. I went the wrong way a few times as you can see by the GPS. Also, as I said to a poster below "Avoid H34 on David Lake (where I was secnd night) , its a a rough hike to, no hills to look out at on the water and you are likely to find canoeist on your site. That is a popular canoe lake and the park does not number what one is what and canoe people probably do not realize that hikers have to book the site unlike them booking a lake." I bet H35 is awesome for a second night. Or push a bit further, I had planned to do silver peak with a third night but just decided to skip it and never used my 3rd nights site.

Yeah you gotta put in long days, I had booked a 3rd site to go into a 4th day if I needed. Got to it by like 2PM on 3rd day and said bahhh, trucked right by it. Hope you don't get any rain, will slow you down a lot on the rocks. It least the bugs wont be out yet.

Thanks for the video, looking at doing this trail this summer and looking to see what difficult spots on the trail might be like. Curious, I know you did this solo, I'm planning on doing it with my dog. Do you think going up the Crack or down the Crack would be easier on a dog (I know you didn't hike with a dog but your first-hand experience still would be helpful)? Thanks!
@backpackeralex
@backpackeralex 5 жыл бұрын
Np, I want to get back and film it in HD. As you must know, life is busy. I do think it would be easier on a dog doing it in reverse. (Counter clockwise) Crack yes, but a few other sections, esp. the one spot. It was hands and foot holds down a 8-10 foot rock face, pretty sure I had it on video at about 35k in. Ill have to look. Maybe you can detour it bushwack, dunno. Lots of dogs do it either way. What breed is it?

@@backpackeralex She's a lab cross, we backpack, hike, and paddle so she's used to the ups and downs of steep trails, scree fields, even have taken her up and down a few ladders in my arms found on some various trails. Right now I'm planning on either four days or five days. Ordering Jeff's Map to see how the distances/campsites lineup for either 20km days or 16km days. I'll look back at your 35km distance and see what it shows. Thanks again.

From what I saw or researched H19 was the most scenic one off the trail, its a whole 1k hike down to it, but well worth it. Whatever you do avoid sites with major canoe routes, most notably H34 David lake. Paddlers often steal the site and its picked clean of firewood. There is much more seclusion on the smaller lakes anyways. Have fun!!!

Hi Alex, was wondering how challenging it was to close the loop in 3 days. Everywhere I look online, people are recommending 5-7 days. I'm a fast walker but was wondering the recommended time was due to terrain or just accounting for slow walkers. Cheers!
@backpackeralex
@backpackeralex 10 жыл бұрын
I would say the recommended 5-7 days accounts for both the rough terrain, the fact that everyone doing it is not a world class athlete, have the lightest gear and possibly some rough weather. I was putting in long days and was tired by the end of each one, I have also run a 1:11 half marathon before and it was no cake walk for me. I did a bunch of 20k hilly hikes with a 50 pound pack on to train. I ended up hiking at about 36 pounds. I would say do it in 4 days and take 3 nights. You could even plan to include Sliver Peak if the weather is nice and you are felling really good on start of day 3. I would for sure do a day 1 to H19, for about 25k. No further or no more, the view from that site is amazing. The first day there is not much to see being low and its the swampy side of the park so watch out for bugs, hammer though it. Second day you are up on the ridge and its awesome with great views and dry ground. Get to H33 or if you wanna do silver peak next day or are felling good regardless go to H35. Avoid H34 on David Lake, its a a rough hike to, no hills to look out at on the water and you are likely to find canoeist on your site. That is a popular canoe lake and the park does not number what one is what and canoe people probably do not realize that hikers have to book the site unlike them booking a lake. Third day if you were at H35 you have the option of hammering out 30+ k like I did or you could get silver and stay at say H46/46??? Either way get an early start each day. You soloing it?

Alex Meyer Alex, thank you so much for this answer. You restored my faith in KZfaq and humanity in general. From your comments, I decided to postpone and train a little more before going for it - and bug season was in full swing anyway. I'll solo it later this summer. Thanks again!

It is a physically demanding trail, I also did it in 3 days solo.it rained hard on me the 3rd day and was a bitch to get back to my truck in time. the rocks where very slippery, but the trail is definitely worth it and very beautiful.

Just did it this year again. This time in three days as well. Five years ago in one (less weight then, both! As in luggage but also body 🙂). Covid was not kind to me (senior now). All that sitting around plus the temptations of the internet work-out was required and after the hike my physical condition improved nicely even though not during the hike (especially the second day breaking myself into the groove). I totally agree about the McDonald's after, if ever then ... then but consider if in time the fish n' chips in Killarney town worth the effort and that little town has still the virtues of being isolated from the main Ontario, being tranquil. ... also first time in running shoes because my Salomon shoes, after 22 years, too much plastic ripped to shreds!!! gave up on me. OK, quality or not if ever I will shy away from plastic in shoes is my recommendation if long-term is an issue.

It was late September I went and can really recommend it. No bugs, cooler and plenty of mushrooms plus the evening swim in your dedicated lake is ... refreshing ...brrr.
