After a long hiatus, which intersected with the canceled Patriots game, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six returned to market with Rainbow Six: Siege in 2015. The online tactical shooter launched to positive critical reception but little fanfare, its early days beset by game-breaking bugs and frustrating server errors. Ubisoft Montréal navigated the maelstrom of issues over time, elevating the title to a standard of quality where it could competently dominate in the oversaturated games-as-a-service space. With Siege’s PvP multiplayer on lock, Ubisoft tried its hand at PvE by building upon the alien-infested Outbreak mode that debuted in Siege. The publisher originally subtitled the endeavor Quarantine, then rebranded as Extraction because of the coronavirus pandemic. Regardless of its naming conventions, many would argue the PvE experience hardly stood a chance.
Not unlike its predecessor, Extraction hit retailers and digital storefronts with little in the way of anticipation. Ubisoft Montréal’s newest Rainbow Six entry missed the mark critically, however, its at-best average review scores painting the picture of a spinoff that couldn’t live up to that which came before. It was a technically sound shooter, sure, but very little of what made Siege successful reflected in Extraction.
Worse still, Extraction arrived amid a crisis of identity for Tom Clancy’s gaming franchises. Longtime players were begging for back-to-basics tactical shooters and stealth games, while the French publisher supplied bombastic, over-the-top experiences that ignored the grounded qualities so beloved in the likes of Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, and Splinter Cell. In terms of optics, then, an alien invasion-centric co-op shooter couldn’t have launched at a worst time for Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy IP.
This is the tragedy of Rainbow Six: Extraction.

I never thought that rainbow six extraction was a good idea in the first place! I have mixed feelings about remakes and remasters, but I would have preferred to get a remake of rainbow six vegas(campaign remake included too) instead of extraction. I never even played much of Siege because there is no campaign, Ubisoft needs to bring back single player campaigns to rainbow six. A remake of Vegas or bring back Patriots is what I want. I wonder too what is going on with splinter cell and is Ubisoft working on a ghost recon game? Do you know if Ubisoft is developing a new ghost recon game? I'd like Wildlands 2 or Future Soldier 2.

Except the "aliens" take on Rainbow Six was actually amaazing. Unfortunately it still had too much of Siege on it, and Ubisoft tried to please the Siege fanboys to buy Extraction, which failed horribly. On top of that Ubisoft giving little support to Extraction, instead of appealing to its own fanbase and newcomers (NON-Siege players) killed the future of the game.

Eh , they could do an espionage game that digs deeper and deeper into the World Government’s involvement with aliens and their technology with the end SOMEWHAT showing the alien, because let’s be honest , alien designs have all pretty much been done (They’re either bipedal and hairless if they’re intelligent or quadrupedal if they’re aggressive and dumb, still hairless). Plus the vagueness leaves a lot to mind and let’s fans come up with their own ideas and designs. For instance, not showing the aliens in Transformers whatever it’s called where Mark Walhberg is a knight or something, the movie shows only an alien hand but that’s all the movie did right

The thing that sucks is that Outbreak was way more fun than Extraction turned out to be. It was a much more dynamic game and played more like Left 4 Dead (the whole team progresses through the map). It was like playing Terrorist Hunt, but with lots of zombies. Extraction turned out to be completely different and really boring in comparison, especially with its "checkpoint" system (transition areas). Overall, the game is way slower-paced, and triggering zombie hordes is treated more as a punishment than a core gameplay mechanic. The only similarity the two share are that they both use the Siege universe/some operators, and they both involve aliens. That's about it. I specifically remember saying I'd be happy to pay for a more fleshed-out Outbreak game. But man, what we got was not that.

Exactly. If they had made unique enemies that require unique solutions akin to the SCP universe (each season bringing in new creatures), made it 4-5 players rather than three, and emphasized a Left 4 Dead approach (maybe random moral dilemmas per map like saving a hostage/curing the virus/letting bomb go off in civilian population/etc)....you probably would've gotten a fantastic survival horror shooter.

Rainbow Six to me has always been synonymous with realism. That’s why I enjoyed playing them growing up. Siege was such a unique game that was hyper realistic and required actual tactics and communication. The extraction push was just the nail in the coffin for that series. RIP Siege

Man this video hurts to watch as someone who playtested it for Ubi under NDA, bought the game for full price and put 100+ hours into it within just under a week. I have seldom been so disappointed by a game like I was with this one. Edit: One thing the video doesn't really talk about is just how little content the game had. The maps were extremely few and were all basically the same that as well as the crisis events content lasted about 1 to 3 hours before becoming extremely boring. You would complete a crisis event in only 2-4 play throughs each lasting around 30 minutes each unless you played with random people in which I presume if your team were inexperienced enough you might fail once or twice inflating the length of the event. Also between crisis events there was absolutely nothing to do in game.

One of the most upsetting things is to see Rainbow Six Siege getting a "Year 8", while Rainbow Six Extraction did not even year a "Year 2". We all know Ubisoft made a massive mistake targeting R6Siege players to buy R6Extraction, but Ubisoft should have keeping investing on R6Extraction to shift away from R6 Siege making it more into its own thing and attracting a different public from R6Siege, but Ubisoft these days only care about the bigger successes now.

It's interesting to see the behind the scenes because based on the limited stuff that I saw, I had a completely different take on everything. I was actually initially excited for rainbow six quarantine because it looked like it was going to be PVP with an E element to it. The idea that there would be a global pandemic during all the military operations, meaning that not only did you have to worry about the rival factions you're shooting at what the actual virus or infection itself that basically a random party that affects both competing teams. When the pandemic broke out I thought the game would obviously be canceled, but seeing then it come back with a name change and have it just focus on aliens instead of a resident evil type virus. I thought this was their way to avoid the real pandemic while still releasing the game. And of course, with these generic bright colored aliens, I immediately tuned out. Didn't know all this other stuff was going on. Very fascinating.

I absolutely loved Outbreak when it first came out. The combination between stealth sections and full on guns blazing action portions of the missions was super fun to me and the overall aesthetic of the infection was amazing because you could tell that what you were fighting was civilians that were infected by an alien parasite and the whole mood of the missions was really dark and serious. Personally, lot of the charm that made Outbreak cool to me was lost in Extraction. Both aesthetically, and gameplay-wise. Outbreak had you running L4D style missions that were meaningful for the overarching lore of the event in atmospheric, dark and even scary locations fighting hordes of infected people. Extraction has you doing objectives selected at random in some really forgettable locations fighting weird alien dudes that glow under blacklights and spending 50% of the time burning goo with a laser. But even after downgrading the PvE experience that Outbreak offered, I still wanted Extraction to succeed and waited patiently for 2 years for the game to come out only for Ubisoft to do what they do best and made yet another massive flop of a game. Moral of the story, fuck Ubisoft.

I liked some things about the game as well. Mainly funny enough bad to be the whole operators having the ability to be captured or injuried. It was way before the game came out that my friend and I would do TH with the same sort of rules. If the operator you played was KIA, we couldn't use them and so forth. The idea of risk and reward with your operators always was a neat concept but sucks that it was in a Cash Grab R6 Siege Game.

I really wish Rainbox Six would at least go back to similar gameplay like the Vegas I and II games. Instead of chasing a trend that makes absolutely no sense for the franchise I wish they would get back to what made players want to jump on and neutralize terrorists.

I was a senior dev on Extraction and man, this is really surface-level stuff. So many things happened internally with this title. The game in a vacuum was fine. If it was made by anyone else then it would have done better because of the name of Ubisoft alone. I don't even work at Ubi anymore but the zeitgeist's "gripes" and trend-based hate for third party companies is an absolute joke. The fact that it wasn't even mentioned that our team was swatted twice while we were working on this game is exactly what I mean. Barricading ourselves on a roof because of misguided gamers being lied to by Kotaku journalists and BS twitter trends. There's much worse companies to work for that mistreat their devs and fans but because they make 10/10 games that are praised and win "Best game direction" awards, all while third parties are hated on for just trying new things. And that's the real tragedy. Gamers complain when third parties try new things while at the same time complaining that thing don't change enough. 80 million people bought at played R6S and its wacky expansions and nobody understands why the company chases them? If you want more realistic games, then buy them. More would get made. It's very, very simple.
@BlindxSide
@BlindxSide Жыл бұрын
" then buy them. More would get made. It's very, very simple." We do. But they are barely getting made at all. That's the problem. The reason Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, and Tom Clancy names are popular as game franchises and were loved is BECAUSE they started out as realistic tactical games. I think the concept of Extraction as a game would have been fine and recieved better IF and ONLY if: - Rainbow Six had other proper titles being introduced outside of Seige. Proper tactical Rainbow Six games. But getting Seige... and then a f*cking coop alien shooter after the Rainbow Six franchise was starving for a proper R6 game for YEARS was a terrible decision. And not just R6, but Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell as well. - Other Tom Clancy titles weren't Far Cry clones. - It wasn't a Seige asset flip. - Didn't use the Rainbow Six name and was branded as something else or new IP entirely. People associate R6 with tactical and shooter. Not sci-fi and aliens. Ubisoft has CONSTANTLY been shitting on it's classic IPs for over a decade and this is why people get upset. Becuase shit like a sci-fi coop shooter gets made when we don't even have proper main titles for them to satisfy the main core audience. Extraction's failure was due to out-of-touch people who decided such a game was the right direction to take for the next Rainbow Six title.
@vinhill1456
@vinhill1456 Жыл бұрын
@@BlindxSide As a collective, more people are buying the newer stuff over the older stuff. So with all due respect, the above isn't true at all. People are shitting on Assassins, then buy Valhalla in record numbers, people say Siege is a joke compared to Vegas and not true to Rainbow and then Siege sells 8x more. People say FARCRY6 is cartoonishly bad, it sells 5x more than Farcry 2, the referenced peak by fans. I can go on and on. So no, you don't vote with your wallets. You buy games in record numbers that are wacky then ignore the straight military Clancy games like Ghost Recon. You're in the vocal minority of what gamers actually want. You might be in the echo-chamber of thinking that "EVERYONE wants X" but you're not buying it as a collective. Devs even want to make the older style stuff, games get pitched ALL THE TIME that are realistic in nature but they're ultimately turned down for less realistic ventures simply because we see the numbers and gamers are voting loud and clear about the types of games they actually want. I respect that you personally have preferences, I share them; but you're not the majority, not even close.
