The more I read about these pedals, the more I see that they're solid sounding pedals in cheap enclosures to keep costs down

Here's an idea : the danoelectro fish and chips EQ into an amp that you struggle to get a good drive tone out of. I feel like this is like a $30 magic wand to fix any amp that gets fizzy or fuzzy or indistinct etc.

Pretty normal to have high end roll off on the repeat but not great if its changing the base dry tone. If you want a completely unaffected dry tone you need something with analog dry through i.e no ada conversion on the dry sign - usually way pricier than $15 though. You are looking at a boss or tc electronic flashback pedal to start with as the cheapest analog dry through options
