Buddy the Jack Russell is hard-wired to chase and attack small fluffy things. This started off being cute when he attacked the mop, but things turned serious when he ate the family gerbil and the whole scene was discovered by their young daughter.

If my dog ever bit my child, past mouthing in puppy hood, my family would never see the dog again. That dog would be straight to a shelter. I love dogs and I don't have any kids but there is no comparison. My child would be more important than my dog in all cases.

Yeah like she knows how to take care of a gerbil they’re social so you meed two or more and they need a lot of bedding (at least 8in) and cannot be housed in plastic cages they’re insane plastic chewers so the appropriate enclosure is a 30gal or larger tank

Personally, I find the growling and then biting the little girl very concerning. Mine has been raised primarily around adults and I'm always super careful when my friend brings her 6-year-old son over. I make sure he's quiet and calm before I allow him to play with the dog and I supervise their interactions very closely.

They don't do research - they just pick a breed because it looks cute- and Jackies are cute- there is a reason why there is so many dalmations in the shelters. People don't do research, see them on tv - oh they look cute, let's get it and then bam! Dog bites because it's not trained properly. And a lot of people think that small dog=barely any walking therefor they aren't tired enough therefor they become destructive.

I felt so bad when the mother started to realize that her and her husband’s behavior with the dog might have led to the death of their daughter’s gerbil. She was crying, you could see real remorse in that woman’s eyes, and the red of her cheeks, for what had happened to her poor daughter’s gerbil while the father just goes ‘ahhh’ and looks at his wife. It seemed as if he was looking at his wife for a proper way to emotionally respond to the situation or to try and shift blame emotionally away from himself. Honestly, just that scene there is a good enough argument as to why we shouldn’t teach our children to bottle up their emotions; because if you can’t take the blame and feel remorse you’ll just end up pushing those things onto another person who may or may not be involved.

@@myview2543 He allows his dog to be aggressive, he even encourages the behavior by laughing and treating it like play time. His little girl walked in on that dog eating her gerbil and the dog even bit her. She doesn't feel safe around that dog and her dad doesn't care. Yes it is the dad's fault and no it isn't just a gerbil. I don't care if that horrible dad cries or not. It would be great if he could learn to be a better man and take real responsibility for what happened.

@@myview2543 Don't give me that years ago bs, we live in the present, we don't live in paleolithic times. If your dog, who is known to be aggressive, bites your child and you keep the dog you are a bad parent. She was scared of it and he obviously didn't care all that much. Dog < child The gerbil was her pet and she cared for it. Obviously seeing that aggressive dog eating it was traumatic for her. Why is that? Because to her the gerbil was a safe cuddly animal that wasn't a threat to her so it easy for her to bond with the gerbil. Dad's dog has been aggressive and the dog killed something that she cared for, so yes, it hurt her when she saw that. That dog is better suited for a child free single pet househould. Oh and I stand by what I said about the dad. If you keep an aggressive dog after it bites your child you are a bad parent, and that goes for mom too.

Typical "small dog mentality" from the owners. I get fed up of owners of small dogs thinking its "cute" or "brave" when they charge my 130lb blind leonberger. If i let my leonberger bark, charge and grab things it wouldnt be seen as "cute" so why let small dogs like jacks get away with that behaviour?

That poor girl, that must have been horrible, seeing her gerbil get killed by the dog. I know how that goes. When I was very little, I had a guinea pig named Sweet heart (my mom had gotten her for my bday), she was cute and loved playing on my bed with me. One day, my aunts dog knocked her cage over and bit her to death. My aunt lied and said she had a heart attack. 😾 Another of my aunts dogs also got to my lovebirds. I haven't finished watching this episode yet, so I hope it turns out well in the end. And yes, I said cage. For anyone whose going to say it was a horrible living situation for my sweet girl. I did have a cage for my guinea pig. I was very young. (Can't remember how old I was back then) and my mother also had no knowledge of enclosures for small pets. So Sweet heart was brought home along with the cage the pet store guy had recommended to my mother. Besides that I played with her often and she loved treats. I still miss her so much. I'm 24 now and have been doing a lot of reading up on different enclosures for animals. So whenever I can get my own house, I hope to get some little friends again, and in a safer and better environment.

A subtle thing she was doing at 5:40 was removing the initial treat he was shown and giving him a different one. From what I've heard elsewhere, this can stop a dog from thinking that "leave it" means they will still get the prize eventually, which wouldn't work for stopping them from swiping food off the table or counter.

For anyone reading this: I’m just trying to spread the word that those critter trail cages are way too small for any animals. Gerbils especially cannot live in those. Any kids having a hamster or small rodent in one of those cages please consider upgrading to a bin cage. Cheap and easy.
@Lenlon703
@Lenlon703 4 жыл бұрын
For gerbils, anything plastic is probably a bad idea in the cage. Even the cage itself shouldn't be plastic. So i wouldn't recommend bins for gerbils, aquariums or glass enclosures is probably better. And same with rats and mice, but they're better in big bar cages since they love to climb (and from my experience, their poop smells *bad* so for better ventilation also)

+Andres Grandma-They probably didn't know that at all. They just saw what looked to be a small, very cute dog and figured it would be a harmless, perfect family dog. So many owners, especially at this point in time when the show was filmed, made the mistake of getting dogs just because they're cute without researching the breed and understanding what kind of dog they're taking on. JRTs can be very sweet, very loyal and devoted dogs, but they have to be trained right to curb their natural predatory instinct. And even then if you have small children and animals, you have to always be vigilante. JRTs are not necessarily a good dog to have around young kids, especially if you don't train them right. And they require a huge amount of exercise (this family probably wasn't exercising him enough either) to where Buddy probably ran around the house before he attacked the gerbil because he was bored. And even if the other JRT was calm and sweet towards small animals and kids, doesn't necessarily mean Buddy was going to be too. It could be they adopted the other JRT while he was older, mature, and better trained by a previous owner when they got Buddy as a puppy. Just because one dog is well behaved doesn't mean the other dog is going to be. The other JRT could have been so perfectly sweet and gentle towards the kids and the gerbil. Buddy clearly wasn't. And if you have a dog that has that kind of hyper predator drive kicking in, you can't have kids running around and you can't leave your gerbil unattended. You're inviting trouble, so either properly train the dog or don't adopt that kind of dog if you don't know how to care of one.

Like Victoria said, yeah it is cute and funny, but it's reinforcing that prey drive for chasing small things. Considering they had a small critter running around, that wasn't good for their house. However, it's completely possible to also teach the dog that this one gerbil is a friend to not be chased but he can chase other things.. which is what should have been done. They needed to teach him how to be around the gerbil instead of hiding the gerbil from him.

You're not wrong, but they could've easily researched dog training online, and as dog owners they have the responsibility to learn these things _before_ they get a dog, not after it's already eaten another pet.

I got 2 cats from the pound that have Bengal in them the amount of prey drive they have is comparable I mean they hiss and growl when playing with their toys if they think it moved to let it know its their prey XD. We keep them very busy but I can understand not being prepared for the amazing drive some animals have and if you don't keep them busy it can EASILY turn on you or those around you. Thankfully we got two siblings together and they play with each other and our dogs so they all have a blast.

Honestly I'm amazed and proud that that little girl has any interest in Buddy after witnessing him eat her gerbil. I don't know if I would have fully understood the idea of animal instincts and forgiven my family's dog for eating my pet at that age. She seems very mature, polite, and smart. Really awesome to see her help out in training and be interested in training! Often the children in these do not want to help out much.

I have a Jack Russell despite so many people telling me how difficult it would be. I worked really hard with my beloved boy to socialize him with other animals/dog's & people. It took a lot of patience & I admit some tears but we got there in the end. I've made sure he has NO small fluffy toys & any aggressive behaviour is dealt with immediately. My boy knows what "no", "stop" & "leave" all mean & he knows I MEAN IT. That means no laughing no matter how funny he may be. JR's are so intelligent & actually quite easy to train if you keep them focused & occupied, they are natural born comedians & are a serious JOY to live with

I loved that episode. The owners were so proud of the dogs, and they were super clueless, but once Victoria gave them tasks, they did their best and were so, so sweet, the "open the door" training was hilarious, the mother couldn't stop saying sorry every time she closed the door on Victoria. A really lovely family, well behaved kids and comprehensive parents. They did wrong, but corrected it.

Although it was no doubt traumatic for the child, JRTs were bred to have strong enough prey drive to tackle varmints in their burrows and not let go. The gerbil was not a pet in the dog's eyes, it was just a rodent inside a house where, to the dog, it had no business being. The dog isn't bad or evil for eating the gerbil. It was just being true to years and years of breeding.

Let me get this straight: the Jack Russell (a breed specifically bred to hunt small furry animals) was allowed in the same space as the family gerbil and the poor little thing ended up dead ... why am I not surprised the poor gerbil got eaten? CommonSense.exe has stopped working 😒😒😒 R.I.P Little Gerbil 💔🐹💔

Angel Pacheco true but at the same time not totally true, my family has cats and we also have a parrot. But the parrot has his own room with tv and air con, it’s incredibly rare the cats ever see him but when they do he _shrieks_ at them and scares them so bad they run back the way they came! Just because I’m _fairly sure_ they wouldn’t hurt him doesn’t mean I’d ever trust the cats alone, not for a single second! That’s what happened here ... oddly enough this happened to a relative of mine; she “introduced” their hamster to their cat, the cat bit the poor hamster, not hard enough to draw blood but still but him! Little Hammy was okay but thankfully the lesson was learned, still shake my head thinking about it to this day! 😓😓😓

Angel Pacheco exactly, it only takes a moment for one to hurt the other especially when either one is so much bigger than the other or this: a tiny helpless animal is involved. A healthy dose of common sense is a big must for all pet owners!

Gerbil would have chewed it's way out of that cage in no time anyway. Also gerbils are social and should be in pairs or more in an appropriate size cage. Unless they're saying "gerbil" when they mean hamster which is a whole other thing and should be kept alone in a much larger cage than those plastic ones in stores. I've seen too many people call them by the wrong names so I have to wonder. Please research small animals before you get them or give them to kids.
@Eventide215

Yeah what I hate is when you get people who do that thing where they give a kid a small animal like a hamster and say if they can take care of it then they can have a puppy.. They're completely different animals and different styles of responsibility. It's FAR harder to have and keep a small animal than it is to have a larger one. Dogs can easily be trained to tell you different things like when they have to pee, when they're bored, etc. You can even teach them where exactly you want them to pee. Small animals you don't get those luxuries usually.. they just kinda do their thing and exist. Really parents should be doing it the other way around.. if a kid wants a gerbil/hamster they should take care of a dog first.
