"Could you kill someone with horse tranquilizer?"
March 23, 1993. Haylei Jordan is 8 when her mom asks her if she wants to leave everything behind. The little girl doesn't realize that her mother has just cut off her ankle monitor and wants to take her daughter on the run.
March 18, 2002. Almost a decade later, Haylei is faced with another terrible decision after years of turbulence and uncertainty: she has to protect her mother even if it means calling the cops on her for what she has just confessed to her.

It's weird to say, but the letter Elisa wrote to her daughter really is beautiful. It sounds like she truly understood her mistakes and just wanted to apologize and finally return all the love and support she got from Haylei over the years. No child should ever have to do that, but at least she finally acknowledged it.

It's true, the letter Elisa wrote to her daughter does sound heartfelt and sincere. It's important for people to acknowledge their mistakes and apologize, especially to their loved ones. Hopefully, this gesture brings some healing and closure to both Elisa and her daughter.

She put her daughter in that position in the first place though. Of course we should protect our kids but we should also know better than to put them in danger in the first place. She's not some kind of saint and it's weird to act like she's just an innocent victim in all this.
@wandertree

She did kill in cold blood - she could have left with her daughter. This was not the same thing as self defense that happens in the moment as you are being attacked. My heart goes out to the mother - she made a lot of bad choices and was in trouble a lot, but she obviously had a tenderness for her daughter. Ultimately, we can't take the law into our own hands as civilians and murder another, yes in cold blood.

The first time I've teared up or cried from one of these; not tears of anger, disgust, or despair. This woman was mentally ill, struggling to survive, to keep her daughter alive. The letter she wrote broke my heart. Its sad the lady dug herself a huge hole through everything. My heart breaks for them in general.

I went to Highschool with Sarah Dutra. She was our senior class president. Never in my wildest imagination would I picture Sarah would take this road in life. Just goes to show you don't know people. At our last HS reunion we weren't allowed to talk about her.

It’s hard to believe anything she says with her previous history and the amount of identities she’s had, she’s practically spent her entire life lying

Yep. I'm no psychologist but I think it's safe to say that mom was a sociopath. Whether it was sincere or not, if the letter that she wrote helped her poor daughter heal, then I guess I can give her credit for that. The poor girl was the only adult in this mess. The daughter seems to have turned out rather well, considering.

Ya, especially if I knew she protected me. No blame. I just wouldn't have. I'm glad I've not been in that position. Although I wish my mom stood up for me against a few of her boyfriends growing up.

No she wasnt protecting her, she did not kill him in self defence while he was harming her daughter. She planned his murder while she could have easily packed her bags & left. She was a thief & con artist she stole peoples identities. Hayley has been on the run all thru her childhood coz of her mum, she wasnt naive to the bad life choices her mum kept making & murder was the last straw

The only thing that I think that mother truly did that was wrong was snitch on her best friend who risked everything to help save her and her daughter from a horrible situation. She could have just left her friend out of it.

This gutted me in ways I was not expecting, quite honestly. Beautifully told story. Haley is truly something special. And one thing that I hope she knows for sure is that despite her mom’s sickness ~ she clearly loved Haley with her entire soul. I almost feel like she sacrificed her life in the belief that continuing to live would hold Haley back. That, along with her decision to drop Haley off on the side of that road, was the most selfless, courageous thing that she had probably ever done in her life. In hearing all sides of the story, I do feel as though there were definitely mitigating circumstances in this situation. It seems to me like she truly felt trapped, already had tons of years worth of trauma resting on her shoulders (even if some of it was self-induced trauma) and didn’t think there was any other option than what she and her cohort did to Larry. I think that she didn’t feel good about what she did. I don’t think she was a terrible person. I think she was just so very mixed up and continued living the only way she knew how to live. There is such beauty in this story, although I am still mindful that a man’s life was taken. I just feel this immense sense of pride, wonder and gratitude for the path that Haley chose to take for her own life. Her mama knew that her daughter was so incredibly special~ and she was right. Haley’s story is an amazing testimony for anyone who is able to listen to it. No matter where you come from, no matter what awful things may come your way throughout this crazy thing called life~ we can choose to do something different and do things that we might never have thought we could do. Sorry for the long post~ I am just stunned at who Haley has become and how she has turned out. May God continue to bless this woman and her lovely family ~ she is deserving of all the beauty that she has created for herself. In closing~ the words that her mother wrote to her was so much more than just a goodbye letter. It was a gift to her daughter and also the ultimate act of making amends in the only way she felt she had left.
