The 1998 Legends of One Pocket Semi-Finals between Shannon Daulton and Efren Reyes.
Daulton was a two time winner of this title, and was on a ten match winning streak, after losing his opening round match.
Reyes is plain and simple, the GOAT. The best all around player that the game has ever seen.
This was a race to four, and it’s a long one. Get comfortable and watch two of the best one pocket players that 1998 had to offer.
Stick around for the interview with the winner, after the match.
Bill Incardona and Grady Mathews provided the commentary.

To think as good as Shannon was back then he needed weight to gamble with efren. I never saw the old time one pocket players but I can’t imagine they could handle efren in his prime

I agree Shannon would need weight. I am an admirer of Shannon but some of the banks he missed were egregious. This is the last time Efren lost in one pocket for like ten years, isn't that right?

No two ways about it; both played v. well. And while there weren't massive // egregious rolls, instead, Daulton got ~9 either small-beneficial rolls or was the beneficiary of Efren getting slightly-bad rolls ... whereas Daulton also got ~2 bad rolls (not coming up with a shot after the excellent bank). In composite, resulting in a total of ~6 more rolls that either hurt Efren slightly or helped Daulton slightly. Two of which resulting in Efren scratching (-1) vs getting 3-4 balls in the final game alone. And despite all the bad rolls Effie got, he _still_ got the score to 7-6 ..! So while no one can say Daulton didn't play a speed perfectly compatible with winning ... it's the almost invisible rolls that were (IMO) decisive. Anyone smart enough to notice them can't help but get annoyed by a ratio of 4:1 to either your detriment or your opponent's benefit..? Though often...people NEVER notice such little 'ticky' rolls (esp. when they benefit them or hurt their opponent) ... whereas they certainly see those which hurt them. Observers tend to only think rolls where you hit 6 balls, removing two from your opponent's pocket & putting 2 in front yours while both hooking & trapping your opponent constitute a "roll." But in reality ...? One colossal roll rarely decides matches. I wish my opponents got only the massive rolls (all at once) instead of a bunch of subtle, minute, ticky rolls on 10-20% of their shots. THAT'S a benefit evenly matched opponents can't outrun. The major rolls I noticed..? The 2 shots Efren scratched on in the last game, CB rolled off so that Daulton wasn't tree-topped & table length near the top-right pocket. CB rolled off hooking Efren after Daulton kicked 2-rails removing a ball near Effie's pocket (near top right again). The only 'roll' that 'hurt' Daulton was not getting a shot after making an excellent bank. But he did that. At 6-5 ... Shannon of course cut the ball in and got so close to scratching he was corner hooked. If I missed rolls that redownded to Efren's benefit ... pls LMK the times.

t's called one pocket. each player chooses a pocket where to pot the balls in. typically it's either left or right for each player. typically # of balls to pocket in tourneys depending on handicap is 8 or 7. it's a precision game and somehow a chess game itself. it requires a good amount of ball control, positioning and strategy to win. it's not a typical 9 ball game where missing is not that as crucial.

OMG that kick at 1:45:45. That was spooky to watch. Grady hit that same shot on me at his house in SC. I went for lessons and wound up winning a little of it back. I got lucky and hit a hero shot. I still remember when we discussed afterwards "well you didn't have to hit it that good." We were playing for peanuts by his standards but he was legit pi$$ed. Always the competitor. RIP

uh, most people found their banter amusing ... he actually didn't argue more than is required by people trying to be as truthful as possible for the benefit of the viewers, whose edification is the primary goal. If you don't realize their skill levels were so close as to have scant evidence at best to justify either thinking they were superior to the other, you just don't know their respective abilities. FYI, Billy was lifetime winner over Grady.
