Killing Japanese Knotweed ( One Year On Results )

Hi In this video. I'm killing Japanese knotweed one year on results from when I started doing it. I'm cutting it with a long reach hedge trimmer and then spraying it with glyphosate weed killer. I'm quite happy with the results so far. I will do it off camera in October and then come back next year and see how the results are looking then. To tackle a huge patch, (make a few trails first on the inside and also blaze a trail around the perimeter), start inside the clump and spray all the stems first, then start at the back and work your way out spraying the undersides of the leaves. Next, go around the perimeter of the patch, carefully spraying all the leaves around the outer edge. Lastly, open your nozzle to full stream and spray over the top of the patch from all sides. Take heart, next year the knotweed will be stunted and easier to spray. 1)The ultimate date for spraying Knotweed is on or around September 15, after the bees are done pollinating. 2) Use 2 ounces Glyphosate and one ounce of a sticker per gallon. 3) Tighten your nozzle to just more than a mist (depending on distance away from the plant) and cover every inch of each plant, first the stem, then leaves and undersides of leaves too if at all possible. 4) The silver bullet to eradicating knotweed is this... when you are done thoroughly spraying... wait for the herbicide to be totally absorbed/dry and spray it all over again one more time! (2nd spray could be done the next day.) After only having 10 percent eradication of the knotweed clumps I treated year after year (for 10 years)... I finally used the double spray in one day technique and found 90% eradication the following season.

After cutting my hedges to move the cuttings I lay a long pice of bailer twine with a loop at one end out on the ground. Put the cuttings across the twine and feed the end through the loop to form a lasso. The drag it.

I uprooted 30 sq yards of it today and yesterday. Hard graft. Got most of the roots as the ground was just soft enough. It'll grow back a bit, but I'll go in with the glyco in the Autumn on what's left. Just got to burn the 6ft pile of of it now.

We are currently injecting on year two. Have you seen much new growth recently? If so, any new advice?

i know knotweed can go very deep but not always. Ive found it can be dug up and thats always worth trying first, especially if its only small clumps.... ive done this personally and found the root system was only a foot down and hasn't come back 10 years later.

Hi Calvin, what kind of mask is it you use?

Hi bobarran. Its only a cheapish mask from screwfix. Its a JSP FORCE 8 HALFMASK WITH P3R PRESS TO CHECK FILTERS. Any make respirator will be ok as long as it as filters with one of these codes, P3, A2P3, ABEK1P3. All these will be ok for Glyphosate ( Weed Killer ). I will be getting a 3m full face mask in the future but until then this works ok. Cheers Calvin

Good job thanks for being responsible. British Rail lost their court case which made them liable for allowing it to spread to neighbouring properties. Did you use glyp 360 at 5% ? Stem injection is another way,

The professionals say it takes 7 years and you should not do this unless trained to keep up their inflated prices. A mate was quoted £3500 to treat a small area in his back garden. I did it for considerably less over two years. Nothing has grown back! Great job Calvin, just keep on top of it.

@@hardworker8030 I use a 20ml to 1litre mix of glyphosate. A drop of washing up liquid too. But you must have a license to use it commercially, the glyphosate not the washing up liquid!

@@hardworker8030 on eBay it's called rosate 360. Don't use too much as it burns the leaves and doesn't kill the plant. It takes time to work on some weeds so be patient.

Hi. Tyler Bradley’s-farm vlogs. Well I wouldn't want to eat it lol. No its not poisonous to humans but it spreads like wild flower on the ground and it is hard to contain. It can damage buildings etc. Cheers Calvin
