I do mold remediation and one of our clients turned their heat on as we were spraying yesterday, after we told them it would need to be off 24 hours. Since our machines make a lot of noise, we had no idea it was on. Till they come downstairs coughing and complaining that they have sore throats. At which point I asked "why in the world did you turn your heat on?" and they said "it was getting cold" lol. They wound up turning it off and leaving the home, but some people NEVER LISTEN!!

Thanks for this video. For those homeowner do-it-yourselfers like me, wear the body suit, respirator, and goggles as he pleads. I know first-hand what happens when you get this mold on or in you -- I was repairing a main line water pipe in a very tight corner of a crawl space where I could see and smell mold. Well I'm quite certain that the severe pneumonia that put me out for two weeks was a direct result of this exposure. I will heed his precautions from now on.

Good on you Cory. I have done over 900 mold inspections and remediation reports. And written a book chapter on mould bioserosolsa and have a doctorate in microbiology with a speciality in environmental mycology. This fellow has it precisely correct. There is no industry with more shonky ripoff "remediators" using fear of microorganisms to cash in on folks impacted by mold. There are of course circumstances where a job might require active ventilation, isolation of the impacted area during remediation and/or structural remediation. But 80-90% of the time mold is discovered at home inspection during escrow period and everyone's utterly under pressure and freaked out the deal won't go through. That's where ripoff remediators often jump in. If you have good instructions, with PPE you can buy at any Home Depot, you can remediate the vast majority of mold impacted materials yourself. Just be advised......mold comes from excess water/water vapor-condensation on (largely) cellulosic materials; paper, wood, dust, etc. One MUST mitigate the source of the water as well as remediate or you'll end up back where you started over time.

Do you have any suggestion on removing mold in caulking? My Mom's caulk is black in some parts. Should I also wear the suit when doing my Mom's caulk job?

Actually, you don't know if it is "black mold" that is toxic without testing in a lab. Many types of mold are black in color. That does not mean you don't take the proper precautions. You should also have negative airflow systems to pull air out of the house in that same room. Just putting plastic over the vents is not enough.

I used a product called Concrobium Mold Control. It works a little better than bleach because it creates a long lasting coating that crushes the micro-organisms. It was about $9 at Lowes. Well worth the money for a little piece of mind.

Good Video. You have actually gone through most of the NADCA VSMR processes. The most important part is to take precautions when re-mediating - for both your health and safety and the other occupants, especially if there are infants or elderly. Engineering controls are a must to avoid cross contamination. To Monica - Never use a wire brush or any process that will score the surface. Use a HEPA vacuum and biocide. If the material organic and damaged, always remove it!

I agree with you. The gentleman did a nice job showing how he got the mold off that wall. I would think a lot of this is common sense once youve learned what chemicals to use and when to use them. I think I would tackle a job like this if it were contained in one area but when the whole house and possibly the attic and wall insulation, well Im not sure about my doing all that. I may be in this very situation with a home that I want to purchase. It appears that the home is infested with mold. I need to find someone to give me an estimate to see if I can afford to take on all this. It looks as though most of the drywall has got to go and the attic insulation as well. Then Ive got to figure replacing everything back. I really like the home and yard. I just hope I can afford to take this project on and come out on top! Thanks for the video!

The fact is that hes doing it without full protection hes is using a correct filter but he needs a full mask and to tape his joints unless hes is running through a decontamination unit before doffing which i seriously doubt, he is going to be taking in enough spores from just that to cause health issues to himself or whoever he spends time around. Mold should never be done diy if you havent been trained in it. Kinda like oxyfuel welding its really simple but if you dont understand the details it is really easy to hurt yourself or someone else. Edit just finished the video, he did not set up containment he did not bag the affected material. Thats sloppy, he spread all of those mold spores around and as soon as a really humid day occurs mold will take root all over that place. He literally did more harm than good in the long run. If this was Stachybotrys you could be causing anyone you see in the near future serious health effects mainly your family and anyone else that in the future will be occupying that room, you didnt remove mold you spread it.

The EPA should have told him to HEPA vacuum it first, because when you disturb it, it will shoot the spores into the air! If you disturb it with the vacuum the spores get sucked up and trapped into the vacuum. Also, If you spray it before you vac it, it will feel under attack and shoot the spores into the air so it can reproduce later. So you always have to HEPA vac it first if it's accessable. Then ideally spray it to kill it, then remove it. Also, just because it's black, it doesn't neccesarily mean it's the toxic black mold Stachybotrys. There are also other different colored molds that are very toxic. Also, you may get away with breathing some in for a while but it does also have a negative cumulative affect over time. I know of a few people that have tried to remodel homes that had heavy mold and died from not having the proper PPE (personal protection equipment). A tiny bit may not be harmful if you are not allergic and depending on the type of mold. At the minimum, wear a white paper mask with the two bands that hold it on, not the cheap single band ones, and make sure they are rated for mold! A suit and goggles is safest.

Nice video! However, you're using the wrong type of respirator cartridges. Those 3M cartridges with the black sticker only filter organic vapors, but NO particulates such as mold spores. You would need a P100 particulate filter such as the magenta pancake discs or a combination cartridge with the magenta P100 prefilter on top (as written correctly in the annotation).

Wrong respirator cartridge, you took your mask off to talk, thus inhaling the spores. You have no air scrubbers running to remove the toxins as you work. The area is not quarantined, so the nearby spaces will be contaminated. It is irresponsible to show videos like this to people. That is very likely Stachybotrys on that wall, and it produces deadly mycotoxins. It's not just the spores that you need to be concerned with. Stachbotrys produces tricothocene mycotoxins, which are extremely toxic to humans and animals. Mycotoxin exposure can result in immediate reactions as well as latent illness. You many not have gotten sick immediately, but years down the road, cancer, liver damage, etc., are possible. Stachybotrys is not the only mold that produces mycotoxins. Common allergens such as Aspergillus and Penicillium, among others also produce mycotoxins such as gliotoxins, aflatoxins, sterigmatocystin, mycophenolic acid, chaetoglobosins, etc. Tricothocenes are so toxic they have been used as chemical warfare agents. Mold should be tested before remediation to determine it's type and whether or not it is in an active growth state. Remediation needs to be done by certified professionals, then the site is post tested to ensure the mold is gone. I am certified and field-trained and also certified as Mycotoxin Environmental Specialist. Don't play mold remediator or inspector. Seek out a Certified professional. Most states do NOT require training or certification in this field. Do you homework.

Also need to spray prior to removal to keep spores from airborne travel just from the removal process. Sad for all the negatives thrown at you. Totally unnecessary...

I thought it was nothing to worry about. I am originally from the USSR and what did I know about the dangers of it at the time in houses, I remember moldy food then but not in a house. I was aware of it in the 1970s but my younger brother took care of it. A few weeks later, I started to get sick, I coughed all the time, My breathing was hard. I went to the hospital and thought it was serious. The doctor asked me if there was fungus in my house, I said to him yes and he said to clean it up and so I did.

@Kenzofeis right with eversharp, as i've discovered to my shock. I'm still in midst of the endless hell of cleaning from mold everywhere in the house. I've learned that it makes sense to locate furniture away from outer walls of house. In my case, the south wall proved bad because of huge maple trees too close to the house, undermining foundation & blocking sun. Mold's repelled by DRY wood, contact paper, paint. Mold likes SMOOTH wood. Even plastic walls inside spare frig (unplugged

i think this is very cool if you know what you're doing or you're an adventurist! personally, these things give me creeps. while living in NYC, i called in ECCE services to fix mold problems in my apartment and they did a fabulous job. however, if you like the challenge go ahead and play, if all else fails you can always burn the damn house down:)

well.... my father left me a house with black mold under the carpet thanks to cat pee and feces. Any tips getting it off of the hardwood floor underneath the carpet? It's also probably gone through the wood towards the basement...

@HowToHomeInsulation Not everyone will have a negative reaction to mold. Some people react only to certain molds. @assman778 is actually correct on the negative air comment. To do the work properly, you should have negative air or some kind of air scrubber on an open loop running while performing your work. You should also be using a HEPA vacuum to suck up any dirt/dust from removing the mold that would have fallen (a ShopVac would just throw the mold spores back into the air)

Mold is everywhere in the air, in your car, in your house. There are more than 100,000 kinds of mold. The best thing to do is to have a dehumidifyier to keep mold under control.
@SAF4EVER
@SAF4EVER 6 жыл бұрын
A dehumidifier does not get rid of mold spores, it prevents mold from growing, an air scrubber or air purifier can get rid of mold spores to an extent, it's the spores that generally make people sick. If you stir up mold, they release mold spores in the air as a defense mechanism. Most, if not all, dehumidifiers do not contain a HEPA filter to capture mold spores.

The majority of the black on the insulation is actually dirt. Fiberglass is inorganic like gypsum board (which is actually a mineral/rock based product held together with cement and paper much like concrete uses cement to initially bind the aggregate together) so it doesn't feed the mold. the paper on the baton strip, like drywall, is a food source for mold but the black on the insulation fiber is dirt trapped like a filter from air penetration from the outdoors.

my dad and i are renovating a house and we have a bedroom with a sheetrock ceiling. it's falling in and covered in black mold, the place has been empty for 7 years, no electricity no nothing. I bought latex coated gloves and a paper painter's mask. Proooobably not the best thing?? Or will it do for the small sections in there? I don't think my dad is gonna wear anything.... he's just macho like that

like removing lead paint you need to spray the mold down with water so it is heavy enough to not become airborne.
