Kim and Nastya provide us with a sometimes thrilling encounter, with lots of really nice rallies and winners from both. Myskina is her usual adorable feisty self, and the embrace at the end once again shows what a class act both players were.
Shame about those wasted set points in the second against an injured opponent, but she won the next major anyway, so all's well that ends well. All tiebreak points included and some once again dubious commentary from Pam Shriver. I'm so glad she didn't commentate more matches.

What a nice embrace between the two! Tough battle from Myskina in the end, love the way she jumps into shots, but Clijsters just too solid.

1:25 “Can she win a big match like that in a major with the serve like that” And Myskina won French Open that year.

Great find. This really was a bit of a missed opportunity for Myskina, even if it meant just winning a set. Clijsters had sprained her ankle in Sydney a couple of weeks earlier and she wasn't really moving 100%. I feel like this was symptomatic of Myskina in most of her big matches against top players. She had all the goods but never quite able to capitalise. She just wasn't as good a competitor as Justine, Kim, Venus, Serena, Sharapova etc. That's what makes her RG run quite remarkable in retrospect.

@@kecleonboi It's funny, I actually think Myskina had a very smooth service motion but she never seemed to have much confidence in it. Indoors she was a bit more bold with it but she never really worked on developing it into a strength.

@@jmiller05 That's why Pam going "I'm not even going to look at that second serve" is so gross. And also shows how Dementieva still hadn't quite made the big time regarding her own shittier serve yet. All would change in a few months though....

@@chriscze6153 What annoyed me about Pam sometimes is that she acted like she was the headmistress of the WTA and could scold players when they weren't playing well. She seemed to have her definite favourites and had whopping high standards for everyone else which were impossible for them to meet. She was very outspoken though which I approve of. I would probably be a complete bitch if I was a commentator too lol

@@kecleonboiwas about to say this. I saw a vid recently of Nastya playing a low ranked ATP player in a super tiebreak and she says “always my weakness” before serving. If she didn’t believe in her serve no one else was going to! But I guess it’s a viscous circle of everyone telling you it’s bad and you believing it. To some extent the same thing happened to Hingis with both her serve and forehand. In general though those with weaker serves tend to have shorter careers or shorter primes on the WTA because of the additional running they have to do - Hingis, Sanchez Vicario, Sabatini and Myskina are all examples.

Myskina had a real chance in this match..but she had to maintain high standards for a protracted stretch.. and fragility in her mentality on the biggest points made her choose less than optimal shots which played into Clijsters’ hands..It was probably the advantage in terms of mental fortitude which secured a semifinal slot for Clijsters..

The way Nastya wasted that 4 love lead is just awful. Little did she know that she would do the same against another Belgian in another heartbreaking match at the Olympics later that year.

Another great video - your channel is epic, loved Myskina’s game, so aesthetically pleasing. Also, really not a fan of Pam Shrivers commentary, she can be so condescending.

Myskina is not a big hitter or have that much pace on her shots but her ability to attack and use the pace of her opponents is her strength.

A superb counterpuncher with basically perfect footwork. She was deceptively tough.

This is wrong - she had massive pace on her shots and was comfortable generating pace off a soft ball. She just happened to be good at counterpunching too. Quite similar to Clijsters in that respect
