LYRICS
i aint goin back again to that state of mind where i was ignorant and it was war time
and i thought i could save all of us if i wrote one line yaknow the right line
and gettin by wasnt gettin by we had to steal and lie and some of us died
we were on borrowed time and the clock was tickin and theyre lookin at me and the move was mine
fuck it just tellem the truth
tellem no man can take nothin from you
tellem your skin is too thick and youll die about this
they dont possess the spirit you do
tellem your city is countin on you
if you go home with nothin theyll probably kill you
and this aint life or death for them
close your eyes and count to ten
honestly this is as honest as ive been
so ill try speaking to the public like were friends
truthfully i wish the very best for men
but you think freedom is money well money has an end
i aint goin back again
i aint goin back again to that dope house where we slept together cuz it was cold out
we had one jacket amongst all of us so we would take turns when we would go out
and the open oven heated the whole house and the mattress on the kitchen floor
with an AK 47 and 3 hand guns but we swore we needed more
cuz we were at war
where wed haul water by the bucket back to our home
and wed heat the water and wed talk for hours cuz we didnt have no phones
and wed dream together about a better life and houses and cars and clothes
and wed laugh and joke as we all showered from the same pan on the stove
fuck it just tellem the truth
tellem no man can take nothin from you
tellem your skin is too thick and youll die about this
they dont possess the spirit you do
after all the shit weve been through
id kill myself before i turn on you
and this aint life or death for them
close your eyes and count to ten
i aint goin back again to the time we thought that a record deal could save us
where we were unapproachable and desperate and we were dangerous
where our city would love us and think highly of us not hate us
cuz it didnt change a thing
i’m still David
i’m still KING

Just discovered this band. The images here bring back memories from my youth that just hit home. The poverty, the scraping, the "going without" and its hard not to get choked up watching this. I get choked up and then I get angry. Im only two steps ahead of being back there and I swear, like he said in this song, I aint going back. This is one of those tunes that ANY band / artist would be damn proud to say they wrote it. Unless you lived that life, you can never understand.

Real hip hop (not the radio mass appeal hits talking ((GangStarr, RIP Guru) money, cars, and bitches, but the stories of how they get those and of why our country gives them less opportunity to get those) and American folk (be it new/old folk, punk folk, country folk, outlaw country, or singer/songwriter folk) are incredibly similar in many ways from heavy reliance on storytelling, speaking of the societally forced hardships of the downtrodden, and using previous generations songs of their same genre (or it's genres predecessor, like funk or R&b) to make new music with be it samples in rap or changing old folk songs with new parts.

As a fellow redhead. Raising 3 sons (I had 4 sons, 3 being Gingers, one passed away 2012) Raised in the hood of canton Ohio. Kids dad is doing 3 life sentences. I have 2 years clean from heroin! I always boiled water so my siblings could bathe. This has me shook. Your writing about my life!! The rage in my heart is what keeps one foot in front of the other. God and karma are not real. Ill never forget going down to the creek to break the ice and get a little water , mile to and from home. Then boiling it just to survive. Its a helluva life when you have nothing, especially with addictions on top of it (cigs , weed and beer) i was never a hard user. Not addicted anyways, done it but never hooked. It still happens time to time. This winter specifcally. Pipes froze. No water for 2 weeks. But i found a way to get some. Do what you gotta do.

My family and I barely moved out of the ghetto we lived in for 20+ years. Ceiling collapsed in every room. Giant hole in the roof where rain poured into our kitchen, living room, bathrooms, one of which the floor fell threw and we were breathing in Methane from the faulty plumbing for 13 years. Only two rooms had power and we ran extension cords to power the rest of our house. We boiled water outside to bathe and during winter it was 20 degrees colder than outside. I remember hearing this song during a heavy rain while putting out pots and pans to try and catch the rain. I shed a tear and swore we would never live life like this again.

How the hell have I gone THIS LONG without knowing about this band‽‽ This and many other songs I've listened to tonight are like snapshots from the past that I haven't thought about for decades. These words bring back memories and feelings I thought had faded into nothingness, but nope - they're still here, inside, waiting for songs like this to hit those buttons. Very glad I found them! It's amazing seeing the story of where you guys came from, how you had close to nothing but held on to something that was close to your heart and they couldn't take away. This video reminded me of what it was like for my sister and I having to live with no water, washing our dishes on the lawn when we we did and sleeping on mattresses in the living room cuz there was no room and too hot all the time. Things weren't quite as desperate for us as they were for you guys growing up I'm sure, however it does strike a chord about the struggle just to live and feeling like your just waiting to die with every step you take. I cannot wait for the new album and thank you King for making your voices loud enough for people like me or anyone else struggling. King is love!

I grew up very similar, and once I heard this song I've tried to listen to it every time I'm having a bad day or I want to just hit a coworker/ guest I just remember or play this song and it brings me back down to earth to remind me what others struggle through on a daily basis. Thank you, King 810! Keep doing good work.

I didn't live this but I have been acquainted with it. This is the true America and more people need to know this. Thankfully my life wasn't this but turning a blind eye to the truth doesn't make it untrue.

Living in a couple different neighborhoods similar to this, I always thought it was normal until I found King. King changed my life perspective and gets me through the hard times. I'm glad to be apart of this family. It's great that I live in a better neighborhood, but sad my brothers are getting stabbed and killed on the daily. King 'til the day I die.

This is music I can truly appreciate because I too come from a broken home as a matter of fact i had no one no blankets no mattress just the clothes on our back i was me my mom my two brothers and sister and every day and night I had to hear them cry about how hungry and how cold they our it still to this day brings tears to my eyes but when you are put through the struggle you only come out smarter than anyone else that has everything because you learn survival

So I need to say this. I discovered King about a year ago. The first song I ever listened to Yavid ‘where were you when we would ride’ hit me way too hard so I stopped listening. The reason is I buried a lot of my past. And then I started binge listening to all of 810 music. Then I came across this song and David if you ever scroll across your comments I need you to know this song broke me. As a father of two girls I promise everyone who reads this post… I ain’t going back again. For those beautiful girls I will never return to the graveyards of the past and I’ll build a future for them. Those angels deserve everything I can give them. Thanks for your Music David.

If you grow up in that hell. You only think you forget it. Songs like this remind you about things youd try to forget. All i know is i aint going back again. My son will never go. There is no limit to what ill do to make that true. I really do wish the very best for men even the ones i had to come up off of.
