King Aemond. A Lust For Power? House Of The Dragon Speculation & Analysis | History & Lore

When fire and blood was adapted into House Of The Dragon, the characters while having a basic framework did in a lot of cases need to be fleshed out. In the case of Aemond Targaryen it came in the form of his childhood bullying and developing lust for power which is very clearly seen when Aemond and Cole look for Aegon in King's Landing, where Aemond states he should be the one whos king. Now the idea goes that this lust for power will drive Aemond to inentonally try and harm Aegon during or after the battle of rooks rest which we will see in episode 4. I break down this idea and debate as to if this is even within Aemond as a character and the impact it has on the story.

The Dance Of The Dragons will be the focus of the plot of the new HBO spin-off House Of The Dragon coming in 2022. So if you want to learn the story before we see HBO's take on it then this will be a very long-running series. Game Of Thrones / House of the dragon are HBO shows based on George R R Martin's A Song Of Ice And Fire series. The information in this video comes from the books a world of ice and fire as well as fire and blood.

i do wonder how blood and cheese will impact this in the show, given that without Maelor does that technically make Aemond the heir now? Watch out for the review tomorrow it ended up being very long with blood and cheese alone taking up 10 minutes.

Yeah, the show runners squishing the timeline by some 20 years does have consequences and having just watched IDG's video on Blood and Cheese in which Robert gives you credit, I look forward to yours as well.

That’s my personal theory of how it will go down. I think Aegon will insert himself in the battle. I bet the original plan was a 1 vs 1

I think he is just pissed enough to want to hurt the Blacks in any feasible way. Considering Aemond was following him with granny, I bet he thought he had a great shot of blowing off steam and not failing miserably. Too much faith in quite a slow dragon and not enough fear of Meleys, who is fast as hell.

I find it... ambigous. Rmember - Aemond took his brother's crown and stated "it looks better on me". On other hand he refused title of King... And Aegon was in such bad state, Aemond could easily get rid off him if he wanted. So it's 50/50. Defnitely, even if Aemond was responsible for Aegon condition, Aegon appeared to not be aware of it, as after his younger brother's death, he commisioned statue of Aemond.

I don’t think it’s so much of a case of he refused the title of King as it was more of a case that he knew his mother and grandfather wouldn’t allow it, Aemond was already in big trouble with his family for acting on his prideful impulses which led to the death of Lucerys, him taking the title of King would have been a blatant power grab among his own family faction, which would divide them even further and made them look weak in front of the Seven Kingdoms, as it would say that Aegon was basically dead, also I highly doubt given Aegon’s injured state, that Aemond was in charge of his care when he had lots other more important things to do and I don’t see Aegon ever being left alone with his brother long enough that Aemond could believably get away with killing him without either Alicent or Otto realising that he was the last one to see Aegon alive. As for the Battle at Rook’s Rest, I do believe that Aemond essentially used Aegon and his dragon as meat shield when they attacked Rhaenys, one of them wasn’t getting out of that fight without getting maimed by her and her dragon, and Aemond had no intention of it being him.

Piggybacking off of what someone else said in the comments, I think there is a growing motif of Aegon, trying to prove himself, and I think in an attempt to do that he will insert himself in the battle. The original plan was likely a one versus one.

While a power grab from Aemond is a fascinating theory there are several reasons we can dismiss it as unlikely to have been premeditated 1. Many records prior to and after the Dance largely ignore Aemond in spite of him being the rider of Vahgar a feat that the prince seemingly did not leverage into meaningful gains prior to Rook's Rest 2. If Aemond was going to move against his brother in a bid for the Iron Throne many at court would've taken notice yet the chronicles of the Dance primarily focus on the conflict between the Blacks and Greens with little to no mention of interfaction disputes on either side 3. The battle of Rook's Rest seems a poor occasion to dispose of Aegon II given the costs born on both sides not only was Aegon grievously injured but his dragon Sunfyre while the death of Meleys was a victory for the Greens the wounds carried by Sunfyre would ultimately undermine the strength of House Targaryen as dragons are the key pillar of Targaryen power 4. Aemond spent the majority of the Dance razing the Riverlands instead of organizing a counteroffensive to retake King's Landing although it could be argued that he was trying to bait Daemon into a confrontation in order to remove Rhaenyra's strongest supporter 5. Aemond's fallout with Criston Cole is another point of contention for scholars with it being possible that Aemond stayed in the Riverlands to divert Rhaenyra's attention from Cole's forces in the Reach

It seems a big theme of the show is characters misinterpreting events leading to tragic results. So maybe Cole comes across Aemond, sword in hand, standing over a broken King Aegon and he begins to make assumptions. Also, the Cole and Alicent situation, but lend to some building tension if Aemond finds out or has his suspicions.

@lukebarroso449 No chance of King Daemon Blackfyre sounds awful😄 The more I think about this, the more I am unsure.I feel like they could both be okay if they didn't let their worst qualities rule like Rhaenyra letting her arrogance and vengefulness become too strong or Aegon giving into his indulgences too much.

I think it's pretty clear the Aemond (rightfully) thinks he's the better choice for king. BUT he would never usurp his brother. Also why didn't we get the green's reaction to lucerys death in the show? What's the reason there? We get one throw away comment from Alicent, that's it.

One thing for sure about the books and shows is it show is who is fit to be king and who not. Aemond is not sorry just my opinion. He left king's landing undefended so he could take back Harrenhal from Daemon. I understand you don't want to be look at as a coward but the green army suffer for it.

I think in the show that Vhagar (possibly all dragons) was a bit uncontrollable to some extent in battle (as shown in the S1E10 battle), and Vhagar went mad and attacked any dragon in his vicinity once the battle started w/o Aemon's control. But that's just a theory to consider/opinion for the show only.

Fire and Blood's ambiguity is, as mentioned in the video, very intriguing. It allows readers to piece together an interpretation of events, which could wildy differ from reader to reader. Aemond's thoughts and possible schemes of being in power are a good example.

I think that Aemond does consider Aegon to be incompetent and maybe just too immature to be a "strong" king. However he is loyal, Daemon and Viserys analogy, if you will. As has been seen, Aemond does not have full control over Vhaegar, she feels and is guided by his emotions and Aemond wants Melys dead. Aegon's severe injuries weren't intentional, they were a by product of Aemond's inexperience in taking his dragon into a dragon battle.

I don’t like this theory. I prefer Aemond being loyal to his brother. Maybe Aegon wanted to take out Rhaenys by himself and commanded Aemond not to interfere. However, seeing that Aegon was going to die, he was left with no choice but to attack Rhaenys?
