Needless to say, this train is a very familiar one to you. These S8 DMUs are being brought to Sri Lanka 12 years after the introduction of the S7 DMUs. At that time, the railway industry in the country was in the era of "DMU" running side by side with "locomotives". 20 sets of this type of train were imported with the intention of strengthening the Power Rail Corps. It is an undisputed fact that this S8 is the most successful DMU model introduced to the country in recent history. These train sets are unique for a number of reasons. There was one train compartment with an engine, one compartment without engine and one compartment with 3 passenger compartments.
After the S5 power train, the entire set is made in a foreign country and these S8 sets are imported. Korean HYUNDAI has teamed up with Japanese HITACHI to build this train, which is made with Japanese technology. Its acceleration power is very high, especially due to its uniquely powerful MTU 12V396TC13 German power supply engine. Therefore, it is also the most powerful locomotive in the country. It has the unique ability to accelerate and reach the specified speed in a very short period of time, even in cases with a large number of passengers.
The train is capable of running two or more sets of multiple units at once, so that each driver can control and run the engines of both sets in one engine compartment. These can often be seen running a double set of two sets together during peak hours.
These trains are used extensively, especially for office train services, and are no less used for short-distance trains. In recent times, these trains have been used especially for long distance journeys to Anuradhapura, especially during the pilgrimage season and during the Pichchamal Pooja. It is said that these S8 train sets which were tested on the Kandyan route to Kandy have been driven to Kandy on several special occasions even after that. Accordingly, only the Matale road, the upper part of the Northern line from Anuradhapura and the Peradeniya-Badulla section of the Main line have not been operated by these trains. S8 DMU run regularly on all other Lines
Almost all of the 20 train sets that were brought into the country are still in operation today and still provide their quiet service to the commuters. These trains have not undergone major changes in the last 22 years, but they have undergone several changes to their face at various times. The windows indicating the destination boards at the time of importation were later removed and an additional light bulb has now been installed on the upper part of some of the train sets. The front lights of the original configuration are located at the bottom of the body. An additional light bulb has been installed to make it easier for the driver to see the train control signals while driving at night.
During their service life, these S8 trains have faced many dangers.
➡️ In 1998 (similar to the S11 accident in Alawwa in 2011) a service train collided with a service train near Veyangoda (Bujjomuwa) and a S8 train collided with it, destroying the dummy cab of the S8 train.
➡️ In 1998, an S8 train from Kurunegala collided head-on with a car derailment near Mirigama, destroying the Dummy cab of the same S8 train.
➡️ An S8 train also crashed in Ratmalana
➡️ A bomb exploded on an S8 train in Dehiwala.
