The iconic movie monster King Kong has made a big-screen comeback recently, thanks to the release of 2017’s Kong: Skull Island and the follow-up, Godzilla vs Kong.
King Kong has had a long and storied history in cinema, with the first movie about the giant ape coming out in 1933. The first King Kong is still considered one of the greatest monster films of all time, and the landmark movie kickstarted moviegoers' fascination with the character.
There have been all kinds of Kong moves to come out over the years, and they unfortunately haven't all been winners. Here is our ranking of King Kong movies, from worst to best.

@@Great_one1 It was insane and unintentionally hilarious, especially coming from a top director like Peter Jackson. Sorry, but even the sharpest shooters (which Jimmy was clearly NOT) don't go cherry picking giant bugs off people with high-powered rifles. Sure, you might kill a bug or two, but you'd also kill the people the bugs are attacking. DUMB! To be clear, I LOVE the 2005 film, but that particular scene was beyond stupid and stopped the film dead, which is ironic because Cooper cut the spider pit scene from the original because he too found it stopped the film cold.

I’ve always loved the 2005 film ever since I was a kid. Hands down my favorite. An entertaining epic that’s engaging before they even reach Skull Island. And I think Jack Black was actually great as Carl Denham.

I actually liked "Kong : Skull Island". It had a very impressive cast and the Kong character wasn't physically altered like Godzilla had....twice.

To this day I still say 2005 is the best version, I get that it's a long film, But I enjoyed a monster movie that wanted to put more story and development and setup to it, as to a typical action movie. Nowadays especially monster movies have almost no story or natural development, we get the same thing over and over again.

Most people forget that king Kong was technically the first titan and the first major movie monster

When you think about it, the 1976 version of King Kong made more sense than the 1933 film. The original had dinosaurs roaming the island, it makes you wonder why they chose to capture Kong and not a prehistoric reptile instead. In the 1970s movie, there were no dinosaurs on the island (there was a giant snake, though) so capturing a giant ape made more sense in that movie.

1933 - no brainier. Although it may look dated today, what Willis O’Brien, Merian C. Cooper, Ernest B. Schoedsack, Ruth Rose and Max Steiner managed to bring to the screen revolutionised cinema.

I love Son of Kong... I have fond memories of my dad and I watching a Kong marathon when I was a kid in the 70s. And Kong Lives wasn't great but the s ene where he meets his baby before he dies is a tear jerker. These movies aren't supposed to great they're supposed to be fun. So quite hating and start laughing and have a little fun.

1976 King Kong was a period piece - really great for 1976. For today's standards the special effects don't hold up. But on screen in the big screen theatres we had in the 1970's it was incredible. Keep that in mind when ranking it - it deserves a much better rating.

Keep in mind however that there were several films made earlier that had far better effects, like King Kong 1933, and of course the rest is history as Star Wars came out 6 months after King Kong 1976. If Star Wars had came out in 1976, it would have easily taken home the Oscar for best visual effects. However as I stated before, I am quite fond of Kong 76.

So question, would King Kong 2005 by itself been considered a great movie? Good movie yes, but everyone in the comment section believes this to be #1. Eliminate all knowledge of Kong before this movie, and I think people would have chalked it up to that of a Jurassic Park 3 like movie. King Kong 1933 was just so innovative and legendary that people are still invested almost 100 years after the release. It has motivated so many people in the movie business through the ages (Directors, special effects artist, etc...). Just my opinion. Whatever the case, here is to another century of King Kong!

I lived my whole entire childhood not knowing there was an original, 2005 movie still holds up the same as it did when I was 4 yrs old, whether you like King Kong or not, it's a really great movie with so much heart and emotion.

I Disagree, I watched the 2005 version way before I watched the original 1933 version. I even watched the 1976 one and it's sequel before the original. And to this day I still love the 2005 version much more, Don't get me wrong I definitely ended up enjoying the original as well, wasn't a big fan of the other version and it's sequel. I would say most young people that saw the 2005 version saw it before the original cuz that's the era a lot of us on the internet today grew up in. The same people that grew up with Jurassic Park definitely had to grow up with the 2005 King Kong or even the 1976 one, not saying some people didn't with the original in this era but overall I would say that 2005 Kong was more familiar for 90s & 2000s people.

LOL! in relation to the 1933 movie, in the 80's there was a comedian who said when he was a kid he found out that he could perform how King Kong moved in the original movie (he does it for the audience), then he said that he was so excited that he could do it he went and showed his sister (does it again)... "we haven't seen her since!"

My list 1. Kong skull island because it shows to everyone how smart and tactical kong is with out even having to be badass yet Kong vs Godzilla (2021) most badass kong has ever been and was Godzilla’s toughest opponent other then mechagodzilla but he wasn’t a titan he was a machine. A few things could have made that movie better but still movie of the year King kong 2005 Was a very good movie it just had a lot of unneeded scenes and was too long

But I think because Peter Jackson was just coming off of making Lotr they green lit him making another 3hr movie. But that’s just my opinion

1976's King Kong for me is better than KK Escapes and KK Vs Godzilla. It is more scary, serious and brutal. Yeah it has its problems but I still think it works better as a monster/Kaiju movie than the other 2 that are just too goofy :)

To me King Kong Lives 1986 is the Best King Kong movie and I hope I am not alone with this. :) It maked 48.9 milion usd worlwide and not 4.7 milions.

Are you on drugs? No it didn't, the movie was a total bomb. It made 4.7 million worldwide. If it made the amount you say, there would have been a sequel.

@@lavallee1963 I haven´t meaned that Kong Lives 1986 isn´t extremely bad for someone or everyone else. I just wrote that in some countries it is showed that it maked 48.9 mil.usd worldwide and not 4.7 mil.usd.

1976 Kong was one of the biggest movies ever when it released. It's special effects have aged pretty horribly, but it was great for its time. It should be higher than it is. Its probably one of the most underrated remakes of all time.

Godzilla vs Kong is literally both a Kong and a Godzilla film and it's not a spearate "Franchise" unless it gets a sequel like Alien vs Predator did.

I loved Godzilla vs Kong I watched it on 25-03-21 it was EPIC but before I watched Godzilla vs kong I first saw 2005 King Kong that's when I first heard of King Kong after watching 2005 kong later me and my family watched kong skull island so I love Godzilla vs kong's Kong

I wasn't much of a fan of Peter Jackson's King Kong. I found the action scenes ridiculously over the top and you could tell the actors were standing in front of a green screen too easily. Skull Island is the best for me personally.
