I've heard many in BMORE claim DMV and get butthurt when people say BMORE ain't DMV. I don't understand it. When I lived in BMORE, BMORE and DC wanted no parts of each other. A sorta rivalry. Now Bmore wants to be included in a DC area thing. Wow.

It annoys when DC people say alot of their families moved up here from the the Carolinas that's why we talk like this 1. well duh, southern blacks migrated all over the East coast, Midwest and USA in general. And 2. yall don't sound southern neither do your pronunciation.
@UptownAlleyFashion
@UptownAlleyFashion 6 жыл бұрын
Brittney Pinckney why does it annoy you, it is fact. Yes the migration occurred all over the east, but we are the closest of those cities to the Carolinas. With our southern rooting mixed with being a little further up north gives us our distinct accent and slang
@antp2390
@antp2390 6 жыл бұрын
I agree all northern cities had people that migrated to DC, Bmore, Philly, NY etc and don't talk like DC
@UptownAlleyFashion
@UptownAlleyFashion 6 жыл бұрын
Antoine Payne that’s because they are a lot further away. The culture is different. Dc people are still closely in tuned with the Carolinas while everyone else up north is in tuned with other northern cities. The only thing between dc and the Carolinas is a southern state (va) that we are literally connected to. We are also right in the middle of two different cultures, we adopt a little bit of culture from each... but actively, not just in history.

I wouldn't say that DC people sound fully deep south, but there is a variation of southern that I've heard from folks down there. "Cah" sounded country to me and saying twelve like "tway-elve". There's various other words, but I can't think of all of them. But, I gotta say that most DC people sound country af like someone from say Norfolk, VA. You can't hear your own accent y'all talk country asl. Lol

@omfgCantGetaUsername
@omfgCantGetaUsername 6 жыл бұрын
There's a lot of misconception and misinformation about the word, "jawn". That word is an all-purpose noun, and can be used in singular or plural form. Joint and Jawn aren't the same for us. Joint can only be used as a place or thing; Jawn refers to anything. "Jawn" isn't how we say "Joint" because of our accent, "Joint" is pronounced, "joynt" just how it looks. DC is a diffferent story I'm not from there.

You're right that Joint can't be plural, but Jont can, just like Jawn. I'm from DC but go to college in Philly, this video made me realize that after 2 years here I've shifted to Jawn instead of Jont.

Laughing at them b-more cats act like y'all invented the word jawn. Bernn saying that shit since the 70s and y'all talk like y'all invented it. ha, funny. But that does go to show you slang on the I-95 corridor spreads like wildfire. But don't act like you B-more cats invented "jawn" or yamean, that's Philly slang and youse guys have y'all own lil twist on it. And Philly doesn't need to hate on a second-rate city. Like, c'mon, really? The city that gave birth to: the first public school system, zoo and public library system in america AND THE WORD JAWN, a former national capital..... And on top of that, the city that gave birth to america, hating on Baltimore, the second rate city? Very cute. Whatever makes y'all sleep better at night. Only good things to come out of B-More was Jada and Pac. And Jada married aPhilly cat. Must say something about them Baltimore cats.... #IJS, don't ever think Philly hates on that lil city trying to be like us. Its actually flattering. TBH, I actually like Baltimore, but don't start talking shit on my city. Philly, stand up.

Dennel - How would you know where the slang derived from if you wasn't in Baltimore during the 70s? Slangs fall in your lap in various ways so you never know honestly, you just following the most popular trend in your hood. Neighborhood dudes get incarnated in different states or meet out of town dudes while incarnated and bring slangs home. As well as local go away to college and bring different styles, trends etc back to the hood. But because they hoop or get money you associate it as it yalls because you are mimicking that guy! As far as Jada, you got that twisted homie, that's Baltimore working Philly, Will had the CAKE not Jada..... Philly birds and dudes let Jada get that last name! So since you got that Jada thing fucked up, we must assume you got the slang piece fucked up too! So don't be flattered, but your attempt was cute,,,, ha ha! But I like your city, real culture with the first school zoo and such.... Baltimore send a lot of our animals on heroin up there because they cant survive in harm city. Second rate city, thanks for the comment, its more like third world and that's nothing to be proud of, but referencing the news Philly aint too far behind.

DC has a northern/southern slang. It’s like no other. Back in the day, people from up north and from down south migrated to DC/ PG county area. That’s how we get our accent. Baltimore stuff is a spin off from us. No disrespect but that’s just the truth.

@SmhBRESHAE3
@SmhBRESHAE3 Жыл бұрын
This is absolutely not true. Baltimore is older then D.C and it’s literally the Mid-Atlantic area. Philly and Baltimore have been black since the 1920’s. Baltimore is also exactly the point where the NORTH AND THE SOUTH meet. The city receives its international nickname “Charm City” for a reason. It has the hospitality/elder respect of the south and the swag of the north. It is the first city to have a million citizens after New York City, my love. Baltimore’s accent/dialect is it’s OWN, and the culture is more closely related to it’s cousin in the north, Philadelphia. The MARYLAND area specifically is a mixture of people from up north & down south but Baltimore is more northern in location than D.C/P.G or DMV area. The Baltimore culture is nothing like the DMV culture. Prince George’s, Montgomery and Waldorf county are located in SOUTHERN Maryland which makes it more Virginia tidewater southern based. Baltimore is a mixture but has had heavy influenced on northern cities and their culture’s. Ex: Baltimore club music was birthed in the late 80’s and early 90’s and is a mixture of Chicago house music/Miami bass. Baltimore club birthed the club scene culture in Philly and New Jersey. (Philly Shake and Jersey Club Music) Please do some research before commenting ignorantly please! Baltimore and it’s influence was first before D.C. also, the d.c/p.g accent is nothing but a Baltimore accent with southern twang.
