They're carrying cavalry sabers, which are nasty slashing weapons. They will cut you to the bone when properly used. Before the Metropolitan police existed, the army was the only means of keeping public order, so an unruly crowd might well have gotten a proper cavalry charge to disperse them. In a way, the police are there to protect the public from what the Guardsmen could do if they had to take matters into their own hands.

The Met run the anti terrorism unit and the MOD does provide assistance when requested, for example earlier this year when the decision was made to charge an armed officer with murder for the first time, and a large number of armed police stood back to consider their positions. The MOD protects their sites to stop public and terrorists getting in, this is a public area so it is Met police. I have all the respect in the world for these guards. They are dealing with ignorance and luckily for those ignorant tourists, the guards are able to remain calm and seated since that horse is a continuation of the rider. With so many people crammed into a small area it amazes me that the tourists literally have no clue how much danger they put themselves in while literally standing in front of a rearing horse. Ears pinned back and all, yet dumb and dumber just stand there looking and filming. The guards know first hand how hard it can be to maintain a jumpy horse and it needs to be done calmly or else chaos will ensue. With innocent bystanders everywhere it’s a testament to how much training these guards go through especially when it’s a bystander that’s pissing off you’re horse! I don’t have that type of self control towards anyone who does something that could directly impact the safety of everyone around you so yes, I applaud all of them for a job well done and although it might seem like no one cares, I assure you that there are plenty of people just like myself who can really appreciate what they go through on a daily basis and we thank you!🥰🥰🥰

The horses and riders should have a barrier to protect them from the many people hanging around, some of the standing guards are behind a chain. We wouldn't like it if people came and touched us or our animals at work?

Its a good idea... But if the horse bolts or a guard loses control, a chain or low fence could injure the horse if he runs into it or tries to jump over. Better manual crowd control is best imho.

THIS HORSE was telling you n telling you n then the one GUARD helped for a short time n patted n patted him on neck n forearm..... That's what Horse needed but then started jumping n rearing again.... Then another GUARD took his reins n guided him back into his Stall........ NOT ENOUGH TO CALM HIM cuz he started jumping again..... THIS HORSE WAS STARTLED BY THE YELLING n wasn't sure WHY...... Granted you must yell at people but he yelled n pulled hard on reins at same time..... Yes this BLACK GUARD handled HORSE but he also needed to walk the HORSE MORE in this situation...... I'm American and even I am appalled at the lack of respect for the King's Guards and their horses. And some of these people aren't even tourist, but Londoners themselves. What these people don't understand is they aren't their for the entertainment. They are working real jobs with real duties. In my opinion, nobody should be allowed to touch the horses at all. I don't mind the pictures, but there is no need to touch the horses. Some of the human race disgusts me.

Do they not understand this is THEIR JOBS!!!? I wonder how their boss would take it if people just walked up to them and started poseing for pictures and laughing , pointing at them?! These people need to be ashamed of themselves. To be a guard has to be very strenuous. Not able to run over the stupid ones and knock the laughing people out....sorry.
