Awesome review! Thanks a lot, the 15 minutes before comparing with Shadows of Brimstone are really well explained on how the game makes you feel and what you will facing when playing it. I also agree with one comment here saying you could get lots of games instead of buying this one, but it seems to be an unique experience. So I believe I will buy some day with my group, but I think I prefer to buy some euros and other dungeon crawlers games first. Great review Joel, the best I seen so far!

@antoyal

+Drive Thru Review That's true. It is especially difficult when you're comparing one game's price to the combined price of several other games. You can only play one game at a time, after all. But if you choose the one game then hopefully it will either have a lot of variety or will be inherently interesting enough to you that you'll want to play it a lot.

Nice, thoughtful review. You may know by now that Nick at Board Game Brawl listed this as his top 10 solo game, and this, Shadows of Brimstone and Myth are my top 3. I can see an issue with trying to play this multiplayer. You need everyone together for many sessions, which is not easy to do. But solo, you can proceed at your own pace. And oh, I really, really hate The Butcher. Next time, I will be ready for him.

I really like the fact that you went into the part about Survivors aren't the focus of the game but the Settlement and world are the protagonist/antagonist. Came here to say essentially this. I am a fan. I have only played solo due to having many things going on in life. My wife and children are interested in the dynamic narrative that evolves naturally from all these random events. I think this review is a very fair representation of who would enjoy this game and who would not. Its a very long review but it gives you all the info you need to pull the trigger or not on this. I compare this game to XCOM on the PC. Its not about your heroes (though you can get attached to them and get sad/happy when things happen), its about your settlement/organization. Its resource management where your guys are just a variable resource you need to go on. Your gear is what makes the biggest difference but an awesome survivor can compound that. The expansions really add a lot as well. It is not for everyone. It is for me. I am very happy with my purchase. I have never put together miniatures in my life nor painted. I found a new hobby that I enjoy along with actually playing it. I call that a bonus. I especially liked the comparison between Shadows of Brimstone as I was tempted to purchase that. This reinforces my choice to get Kingdom Death Monster over it. Well done

I always hear people describe grim dark things or highly sexualized things such as Kingdom Death, Berserk, Tarantino movies, Robert Rodriguez movies, as juvenile, or even "corny." I don't agree at all. In my opinion, they are stylized, and the difference is clear: intent. They purposefully bent the expectations of reality to create an alternative running reality that functions differently. The purpose of the "bend" can vary, but it often makes light of heavy subject material as a way of excusing itself from dealing with heavy subject material, alleviating some of its severity. Because otherwise, the severity would be unvearable. Stylization is like a license to talk about the most screwed up elements of humanity and demonstrate to the viewer/reader/gamer a good faith agreement to not do anything in poor taste. To me, it all comes off as highly sophisticated entertainment that reaches up as well as down. I don't think of that as being juvenile or anything similar. Sometimes "big boobs and butts" are just that. But in the context of something like Kingdom Death or Berserk? I just don't see it. Is a dancing girl in a Tarantino movie just low brow exploitation of the female sex? I hope that makes sense.
@DriveThruReview
@DriveThruReview 5 жыл бұрын
It does. I just use the term as a shield so I don't take it too seriously. Honestly, I use it for just about any form of fantasy or sci-fi. I don't know why Lord of the Rings or Marvel movies get a pass. It's just as "juvenile" as Kingdom Death or 40k. I'll also use the term "pulp" or "Ameritrash". It basically just covers stuff that is so far divorced from reality as to not withstand much scrutiny from a stodgy point of view. I still enjoy all of the above though. :)
@listrahtes
@listrahtes 4 жыл бұрын
@@DriveThruReview Disagree about 40k as a whole being as "juvenile" as Marvel. Honestly something like Marvel shouldn not be in the same sentence as LOTR or 40k. 40k nowadays has a deeply evolved universe with classics like the Ravenor or Eisenhorn series + quite some others. The lore itself is strong and exceeds classic villain / good guy by far and touches aspects like how a saecular or religious society develops, how morals are often a cultural point of view...etc. It has layer above layer in meaning contrary to Marvel..etc which is really just low level entertaining for the masses. Regarding sexuality and how it is perceived that really is a cultural and political thing. Quite some people nowadays are more puritan about their body. They love watching horror even torture movies but are offended by a boob. I accept that but its a highly distorted view of reality which ends in people equalizing sexuality with sexism. Nudity and sexuality are as natural as it gets. In that KD:M can give us a very focused drawback on human conditioning and what Siegmund Freud called the "id". And again regarding juvenile I get you dont meant that in a pejoratively way but the reason I disagree with this is because I dont see the "far divorce from reality" In its overstylized artistic language it connects to us in several instances. Thats imo why people buy and play it. They feel this connection. sorry for my english. not a native speaker and some words may be wrong. Appreciate your channel as you always try to give a diverse picture of a game and sometimes transcend the gamers perspective. have a nice day

The expansions really do add a lot to KDM, the game plays fine without them but the new quarries and nemesis bring a lot of cool new aspects to the game. I played a game of KDM with most of the expansions and it doubles your fighting arts and disorder decks, add loads of new terrain pieces, story events and locations. Its a lot of money for the expansions but if you are a fan its worth it. The lantern Festival expansion will expand the base campaign past the watcher, so the watcher is a kind of break in the game. It isnt the end unless you want it to be.

That is just not at all true. I see this comparison everywhere and I just don't see it. Dark Souls you have complete control and anything that happens to you is because of you. You didn't dodge at the right time etc etc The game continually coaches you to learn how to play and beat it (It's overrated on its "difficulty"). KDM Is about rolling dice and only being able to slightly mitigate possibility of failing a role. But at the end of the day this is just a game about the luck of the dice.

Comparing the miniature quality of this game to Shadows is like comparing the Mona Lisa to a dog turd on the sidewalk. Also the combat in this game is way deeper then the Shadows combat is, especially if you just compare two base sets and no expansions. Shadows is just random dungeons and slaying tons of monsters, its more like Warhammer Quest and makes your characters feel very powerful, Kingdom Death makes you feel the opposite, and even if you feel your surivor is becoming a badass, there is still a real danger to the combat. Every encounter is a boss fight. I feel Shadows is more approachable and lighter fun, but kingdom death has a lot more depth.

reminds me of Romancing Saga 2 from SNES. Where you play as rulers of a kingdom , expanding it, recruiting more allies, completes project to advance weapons and spells. Then die of old age or in battle, pass on skills learned to the next ruler. Eventually facing the final boss. Maybe when I get some extra cash I will pick Kingdom death: monster up and give it a shot.

@DriveThruReview
@DriveThruReview 8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Ng Once you build the minis, they are built. You never lose gear though really, so it's not that big of an issue if you transfer weapons to a new character. The armor might not match up exactly or maybe they only have one weapon of the type or something. It will be "close enough".
@Razorwindsg
@Razorwindsg 8 жыл бұрын
+Drive Thru Review So i guess this is because the actual equipment and stats is on the cards, so the aim of the miniatures' gear representation is more of "get as close" so that I don't get confused which is which?

+Michael Ng Right. Or you could just build your favorite looking survivor and just use that all the time regardless of gear.
@antoyal
@antoyal 8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Ng One thing that a few maniacs are doing with this game is to put little magnets at the major joints of the characters. It requires hollowing out a space for the magnet, sort of creating a ball joint. I think that this is more common in dedicated miniatures games like Warhammer, but it does allow you to "reset" or modify your character miniatures in this game. I am not handy enough or dedicated enough to go that route though, so I would just opt for creating character archetypes. Dude with the two-hander, chick with the spear... that kind of thing.

+David Pellegrini It seems to be very high quality, but I'm also confused about why they chose to go this high end. Like I said in an earlier comment, if the game is good, they can reduce the quality of the components and still have a good game. I'm guessing that their marketing strategy is similar to companies that sell expensive cars. In the board game world, this is a Rolls Royce. I don't blame them for trying, but I wonder how financially successful they will be.

+The Grim Jester (Chris Donovan) Ya. i don't think the one to many price comparison is quite apt. You could also buy like 200 fillers for the same price. You are paying for that unique boutique experience. The minis in none of those games are as details as this game... nor as customizable. A couple of those are great games. Brimstone is probably the closest comparison. And yes, when you look at that across the board. You can get ALL of the Brimstone items for the same price. And that's a real interesting comparison imo. They have a lot in common but are also very different... as I talked about in the review ;)
