Thank you for this video! The day after I played this for the first time, I brought my copy of War of the Ring to sell at a game swap. It's precisely the type of thematic dudes on a map game that I wanted out of War of the Ring but in the time frame that I can play without having to schedule it weeks in advance. I know it wasn't an exhaustive review but I hope you didn't miss the rule where settlements add their level in dice, so even the Atreides player loses troops, level 3 sietches are very hard to take over.

Backed this on the original KS and so glad I did. We've only played a few times and not yet added the expansions. But with the three playthroughs it has scratched the itch without the time commitments of Rebellion & WOTR. Im looking forward to your thoughts with the expansions. We plan to add them with this weekends play.

I keep hearing the 4-player option for this game is substantially better than for Rebellion or War of the Ring. People are actually saying they'd buy it just for the the 4-player implementation. Did you get to play it much at 4?

I have a hard time with people commenting on balance of a game when they haven’t played it very much. I’ve played it a few times, and I see what you are saying, but I also can see both factors balancing out each other. I’m not ready to give a verdict yet. But I’m very confident and experienced player will have a higher probability of winning regardless of which side they play. This will also be played a lot more than War of the Ring, because it’s way more approachable in setup and playtime.

I play this with my son and our only experience with Dune is the recent films. He is 13 and always plays the Fremen/Atriedes side and I have to say that neither of us find the Prescience cards random. I feel that anyone that would have watched the recent films then they make sense and we actually find them very thematic 👍 I do find this is a game where we are learning together, so you kinda need that consistent ‘playing partner’ to grow together with this game, Great review 👍 looking forward to what you think of the expansions

I heard from other reviews that they were doing the same thing but in different way which made it very boring :D Dune is my favorite book. Hey Barry. My opinion has actually improved quite a bit over the years. But.... that's because I have added copious expansions. The vanilla base box... is very bland. But, now we've played a couple of campaigns since the time of this video, they've been a blast. Adding the variety of enemies adds some spice to it. (But, with the counter that you basically have to "buy" into the game to make it "good") :)
@BarryDoubletBoardGames5 күн бұрын
@@DriveThruReview that’s the trap. I was going to instantly get expansions but thought it wise to just dip my foot in the pool. Thanks for the advice Joel. Could you advise some of the better expansions?

@@BarryDoubletBoardGames Caverns of Cynder, Trederra, Derelict Ship. Those are my personal favorites, good for variety of setting/terrain. Firstly! forgive my Ignorance of this stuff. I am looking around, and found Game Toppers. Went to th website and decided to try youtube first. Anyways,...my question is how well do they stand-up to leaning-on the edges? Would a dumb-player not paying attention, tip! the whole table and get his butt-pushed out the door? How Stable are theyonce assembled? They just "Balance" on another table,...right?
@DriveThruReview8 күн бұрын
That would depend on the table underneath more than anything. If you didn't have a table big enough to handle the size of your particular Topper you would have that problem.

Years later and Mark Latham should be ashamed of having his name on this game. Kickstarter remains unfulfilled with not much to indicate they spent the money on even trying to produce the game. Used kickstarter to get $75 off of backers and then another 25 off gamesfound, but added an extra .50 cent charge so you can't actually complete the purchase of the pledge (can't pay any amount under $1) to be eligible for a refund. And oh hey they are selling the pdf without even giving the pdf to their backers while flooding the reviews with fake accounts to coverup how blatantly generic and boring the game is. If anyone is seeing this years later steer clear of this game and Blacklist games.

Also they added 1 shot mode with preconstructed deck / items (but you could also custoimize with some deck building pretty quickly), and one expansion adds a mini campaign with just 3 bosses. i reall like how they reduced this game to the essence and eliminated unnecessary frills. It is a 4 space board, no dice, just grab a monster and charakters and start playing. and there is a wide decision space from the first round on. it is immediately interesting and choices matter.

Thanks for this video! I really really wish there were a cardboard standee version of this like with Oathsworn. Last I heard the publisher considers the minis essential to the game and won't make a standee version.

Minis = 💰 I like that Awaken Realms is pretty much offering standee versions of all their games now.
@elzheiz26 күн бұрын
@@abandonlife111 Awaken Realms is rich enough to do that but for a relatively small publisher it's pretty much impossible :/ That would have been so good and save on so much space, so fingers crossed for the reprint!
@andrewchilton818119 күн бұрын
I've played this game just once, but there's no way the minis are essential. I couldn't even understand why we needed the plastic monster there at all, could have been a picture on the board and a spinner to indicate what direction it was facing. Pure conjecture, but I imagine they are driving off a fair number of people who don't want to spend $$$ on a card game.
@elzheiz19 күн бұрын
@@andrewchilton8181 most likely they are saving more money by having a bigger miniature print run than they would be by getting more customers that pay less but a split print run. And a lot of people who would have taken a standee pledge (like me) decided the game was worth it even with the minis, so we still pledged nonetheless. I'm pretty sure minis are never essential, in any game (even wargames could be played with standees tbh)
@andrewchilton818119 күн бұрын
@@elzheiz I understand their desire to sell minis because people will buy them, but people also buy card games, a lot. I don't even think this game could justify the use of standees for the monster, it's existence is solely to show what direction it faces. Plenty of card games are played and playable without either. This would be like putting minis in ark nova to indicate that your enclosure is occupied by a particular animal. I'm not anti-mini, I have a lot myself, but in this game it really stands out as unnecessary.

The game definitely doesn't try to be narrative, it's exactly like Monster Hunter. They added some because you need some kind of story for the campaign but you can pretty much skip all of it and jump the reward section without any issue. Plus if you want, you can just play expedition mode and play fights directly without bothering with narration! My favourite game of the year so far!
