Riku never used to be, but he definitely changed after KH 1, I think the main reason is because Riku would have had problems living with himself after what he did in that game. Even though he's fine now his hate for his past actions and his loneliness have become part of his character, so I guess it's natural that he's so awkward even though he used to be the coolest kid around back on Destiny Islands. I think Riku may have opened up a lot more due to Kairi's presence which might explain why he appears relatively shy in Birth By Sleep and the flashbacks in KH 1. So in other words, Riku was shown to us right as his character had begun to change, what we see from him now is not necessarily progression but a regression of his character, for some of us that's how we make progress, by going back to the way we were before. As for Sora he's fairly stagnant until KH 2, after which he changes to be more stoic like Riku even though it is not in his nature, unlike Riku, Sora feels forced to act happy all the time and it has completely broken him. And it all started when Donald and Goofy gave him an Ultimatum "stop caring about your friends or never see them again." That's basically what they told Sora when they said "this boat runs on happy faces. " Out of the trio only Kairi and Riku have actually undergone positive changes, because of Donald and Goofy's influence Sora has become quite heartless on the surface. Despite everything he does and says there's an undertone of passive aggressiveness to it all because Sora doesn't really want to be the Chosen Keyblade wielder, nor does he want to save the Worlds, it's a duty he never asked for and you can hear his fatigue in his voice whenever he shows more emotion than his neutral "happiness." Out of the three Sora was also the person who cared the least about the raft and travelling to other Worlds, he helped out because they were his friends but I don't think he ever actually wanted to leave Destiny Islands, which is why Sora responds with apathetic indifference when he finds out there's other Worlds out there, when he's made aware of it he basically just doesn't even seem to care. Sora hasn't changed underneath it all but like Goku I think he's a fairly misunderstood character, because of these details Sora is easily an S tier in terms of character writing. All of this is shown in full force when Sora is shown to no longer believe in himself in KH 3, Sora breaks down crying because he doesn't know who he is anymore, he's always been surrounded by Donald and Goofy, he never had a chance to be himself, and when his friends were gone he didn't know what to do anymore. You know what KH 1 Sora would have said? "The heart may be weak, and sometimes it may even give in, but I've learned that deep down there's a light that never goes out!" Sorry for going on so long.

One thing I loved about KH3 was there were moments of Sora being a little more sassy or snarky ex:"Good thing the snow is so soft, I could do this allll dayyyy :/ ". Two points I just want add to this but can't be bothered to go into is: The weight of responsibility and expectations on those poor kids shoulders and toxic positivity.
