Kingdom Rush was all prepped to let me down...I've been hyped about this game since I first backed it...which is always a bad thing when it comes to games, setting expectations that might not be met...but Kingdom Rush delivers for me in a big way. Polyomino tower defense, great art, easy to teach and play, and challenging in a way that is rewarding without being over the top difficult...the rest result is a game that I'm thrilled to add to my collection.

CORRECTION: The King's Pledge did have a tray that was meant for holding towers in game, I didn't realize it's purpose and thought it was a generic token holder or something. This wouldn't be in the retail edition but was in the kickstarter edition.

Yeah, it looks pretty generic (and not at all like you’d expect based on the KS pictures) until you plop the towers in and realize they fall into that perfect angle. I’ve been keeping some of each damage type back in a baggie for 3-4 player games so the damage trays are more manageable with all the options. Also, if a damage shape is really only needed for a certain tower, I’ve been storing them under those tower cards in the tray.

I think the plastic cards are so mutch better than the cardboard towers. I never going to buy, the 3D towers expansion. But I agree with you for the rest of the video. This is a great solo game, and yaah, it is realy challanging, but it's awesome. That's my new favorite board game.

If anyone is concerned about the rulebook, there is an update to it, and also a new Puzzle scenario booklet to help learn the game. It'd be cool if you get a chance to check it out and leave a quick update about the Puzzles when they are officially released soon :) Trying to rapidly make a name for myself as a unique "tutorial style rulebook writer"... so hopefully everyone enjoys it, and if not, I'll just take some critiques and improve for next time!

Just saw they will be launching KR Season 2 on Gamefound next month. As details about it come out, I'll be curious to see if the original KR stays fresh enough to warrant investing in a Season 2 as well, or if the experience is done justice with one or the other. I haven't played KR yet, but I do like polyomino games and tower defense. Certainly intrigued by it. Perhaps Season 2 will offer me the chance to get the deluxified content I crave :)

I love Lucky Duck, I love Kingdom Rush and tower defense, I love how unique the game is, however we have not enjoyed it yet. It is pretty much a solo game at all player counts and I generally do not like solo games. The first few scenarios don't scale for difficulty the way the later scenarios do (which is why I think so many complain about the hardness). Add to that the fiddlyness, rule clarifications (I rarely feel like I am playing the wildcat correctly etc), portal cards being all or nothing and don't give gems, and necessity of quarterbacking to succeed I kind of regret going all in. I will give a few more tries but I wish I was as happy with it as you are.
@BoardGameCo
@BoardGameCo 3 жыл бұрын
Totally hear that. The solo aspect of it is what I had to adjust to. Still worked for us with 2 and 3 but it really does feel like a solo game that you're giving up some degree of optimization to play with more.

I just played it for the first time yesterday (2-player game). I also really liked it, but indeed, the rulebook leaves something to be desired. I also thought it was a tad too difficult. I don't know if we've been playing it wrong or not, but we only won 1 out of 3 games. At first I actually regretted getting the towers (I backed this when I just started backing kickstarters, so I went all-in), but I think it is much better with the towers! Wouldn't have it any other way :D

I'm definitely in the camp for "make a big pile" of distinct components, vs tediously sort everything out. The polyominoes here are certainly the former. "Shipyard" is one game in the latter category.

Played three scenarios true solo so far with no damage to kingdom. Lilith almost got me, killing my hero with an unexpected double damage. I read that you play double handed, so I was wondering if you have tried true solo yet an if so, which you preferred? I built DIY foam tower bases. Much needed since I did not get the king pledge...

Interesting video! Expected you to dislike it after the weekly summary video, the listed negatives seem really fair. Agreed on 4 players. It gets so fiddly, and getting a plan is so much harder. I can see why people with 4 player groups end up with "impossible to win" scenarios while soloists playing *as* 4 players are not thinking it to be *too* tough.

@vascariz I'm easily more than 10 hours into Kingdom Rush. Rushing through that game will kill you. You need to think, rethink and take your time. Don't get me wrong, there are games I've reviewed with 3 plays under my belt, but this is far from one of them.

@dan roberts Dwellings I just didn't enjoy nearly as much as these 2. At the end of the day you should 100% decide if you get value out of my tastes, but you should use our general overlap as an indication over any single exception. Dwellings did not ring that bell for me. I'm happy it did for others.

The game doesn't scale well. There is no true "easy". A LOT of games have removed scaling and just start at hard and go to impossible. I find this really annoying. A loud minority got their way and only want things rogue-like. I don't have a problem with a challenging game, but different people need different levels...not just hard...super hard....and impossible. But like you say....maybe me and my entire circle of friends didn't play it right....or maybe it's just ridiculously hard.
