I feel like this "Magus can actually use Triple Techs" point is gonna become my new "you can use a deku stick to open the shortcut" that plagued my OoT comments section. Yes, I know. You can attach an equippable to him for a few triple techs. He can't learn it by level up, though, like the others. I'd actually say the fact that he can't learn them naturally is even more telling. He can't even come up with a strategy naturally, he needs an item to get it done, thus separating him from the group dynamic even more.

I first played this game very briefly at a local brick and mortar video game shop. I was 14 and couldn't afford the game so all I got was an out of context experience of Zeal. A year later I borrowed the game from a friend at school and my mind was just blown by everything I experienced playing it. At the same time another friend had confided in me that they'd been having suicidal thoughts due to things at home. Over the next few months my spare time in between classes was spent checking up on them and talking during homeroom. In CT I was working my way through the various endings, specifically the variants of defeating lavos while Chrono was still dead. It made me think about how I would feel if my friend was gone and how, unlike in game, I wouldn't be able to bring them back and anyone else who loved them wouldn't either. I told this to my friend and I'd like to think that God helped me help my friend through CT and the wonderful message therein about what we hold dear in life. About how the moments we create with them is so important and should be cherished and sought after. I truly love this game so, so much. With all my heart I am so glad that is is bringing some joy to others to this day.

When I realized it’s in a chest in the castle during the prison break I gave up grinding for it on subsequent play throughs. I normally go back to Chrono Trigger quite a few times. My next play through is going to be what I’m calling the lowest level run. Where you only fight the monsters you have to. Which means I leave Chrono dead since that’s optional.

Chrono trigger was so ahead of its time that sometimes i feel we haven't even reached that time yet... Where most rpgs procedurally generate their battle by creating enemy types and then programing random encounters. Chrono trigger chooses to program EACH AND EVERY battle individually, most of them with unique animations and a unique location to battle in. Where a lot of rpgs seem to use their battle systems as a way to lenghten their game by working less on their battles and more on their story, chrono trigger instead refines every single aspect of the experience, every hour feels masterfully crafted for player enjoyment and i simply don't feel that in any other rpg

You say this but Yakuza like a dragon has all the crono trigger mechanics in a modern Japanese setting but yeah we don't know how it will truly turn out it's only a hunch I got from the trailer I seen Heck Dragon quest 11 also makes me realize how much inspiration it borrowed from this games mechanics pep up is basically the triple attacks of the party in crono trigger etc but yeah I haven't played crono trigger I got it recently on the ps1 it's pretty bad port or lags and even freezes in place sadly if I want to experience the best version of this game I have to pay exaggerated amount for it so really I guess ps1 version gave me a sour taste on a otherwise loved game by many

Diego I can agree to some extent but random battles in the Psx era final fantasy games changed the game so to speak. All of the consoles processing power can be used to render interesting locations and have the camera dramatically frame attacks and amazing spell effects. Imo, the battle design in ff7-9 has yet to be surpassed, even in 2020. You couldn't have that experience if you had to fight every battle on the field screen.
@diegog1853
@diegog1853 3 жыл бұрын
@@alanlee67 To be clear, I actually don't mind random battles, but they can get pretty annoying when you are trying to explore an area or you are lost in a dungeon. As a counter argument I would say that what you said is true, that random system makes the battles a lot more cinematic, but thats the trade off, they look nicer but in terms of gameplay I think you mostly loose. And I don't know why you can't have the enemy on the map, but then the battle can take place in a separate dimension with the same ff7 effects. Overall I consider that the snes and playstation era are the golden and silver age of jrpgs, there you can find the best rpgs of all time. I really enjoy both line ups, nothing against them

I swear nothing else motivated me to learn the language as much as this game, I just HAD to know what was happening. The scene in the future where they learn about Lavos for the first time and culminates with the team resolving to stop him and the main theme playing at full throttle is burned into my brain. I simply adore this game.

He made it obvious a while back during the Metroid ones. He stated that Gamecube was one of the newer things and he grew up on that and he was a child when it came out too so obvious he was very young considering GC's release date. But yeah I'm 30 myself and this is a nostalgia game for me. It's a bit ironic he has a series called Retrospective, and while I know that's different from nostalgia, it still falls on irony when someone who plays a game that came out x years before them and only just recently decides to play it. Now that's not a bad thing, but the experience is far too fresh in my opinion. It isn't like something you played 10+ times and come back to and say you never get tired of it. Examples for me are FF7 and Ocarina of Time of games that I just enjoyed less as time went on and found myself discouraged further each time I played through it, where as titles like FF4 or FF6 and Majora's Mask or Windwaker (just to name big titles for a few examples). I played CT back in 2001 when it was re-released on PS1 because I didn't have an SNES so it was still a rather new compared to almost 25 years later, and got every ending, then did the same when it re-released on the DS and it's a game I genuinely go back to time and time and time again without ever feeling burnout. No part of the game makes me groan like Ocarina of Time or FF7. TL;DR Weird that someone that wasn't even born played the game recently with praises to it without giving it time to sink in and see if it's a new wow factor or actually good.

My only criticism is that there wasn't much rhyme or reason for some of the spells for each character. Why does Lucca get protect? Why does Crono know Life 1? It felt like they were just squeezing spells into open slots. It's still my second favorite game of all time though.

One point that was not brought up in the video: Chrono Trigger is the first/only RPG I’ve played where there is an actual story reason for limiting the party size! Every other RPG has an arbitrary party size limit with no explanation, but Gaspar explains at the End of Time that any time 4 or more players travel through a time gate they will be sent to the End of Time.
@jacobmonks3722

Final Fantasy VI has in-story reasons too, but the size limit is still arbitrary. It could have been 5 instead of 4 and the story would pretty much be unaffected. Chrono Trigger actually gives an in-story reason and an in-story LIMIT. Which is pretty cool.

Yeah it was very ahead of its time. Like you basically don't need to ever grind, and actually grinding doesn't really help you win battles anyway, like I tried on one playthrough to use a cheat making all the characters be at max level, and it doesn't help you beat the bosses at all, you still need to beat them the same way through using certain tactics. Different tactics for each boss. It's more like a modern RPG in that way. And the music seems so far ahead of its time, and still might be the best music in a game ever made
@okagron

@@duffman18 Grinding does make you win battles much faster, what you are talking about? The thing with not needing to grind is that the game is too easy. And the music is great but not ahead of its time. It's music that would have fitted with Final Fantasy 5 or 6.

I feel like if you go into a game with the mindset you had going into Chrono Trigger you'll be more willing to accept a game's faults. When a game like A Link To the Past is so often referred to as one of the best games of all time, every complaint, be it major or minor will feel more substantial, since no matter what, that complaint slightly removes some of that honor, leaving you more likely to question why it's so beloved in the first place. If you go in with high expectations, they'll more easily be shattered, whereas if you have low expectations, things you do like will stand out more, and things you don't like will be more passively ignored, since the game's reputation isn't defending them. This is what happened with me and the Donkey Kong Country trilogy. Because DKC2 is praised to hell and back, every time there was an enemy pattern I didn't like or a wonky hitbox, I would get really angry with the game since I had assumed it wouldn't have these issues with the reputation it had. But when I got to DKC3, which most of the fandom seems to hate, I didn't expect it to be very good, so every time something happened that I really liked, I was enjoying myself a lot more than with DKC2, and I tended not to notice its flaws. I will fully admit that DKC2 is the superior game, but I enjoyed DKC3 far more because of it. It's weird how reputations work like that.I sort of wish games couldn't have them so I could go in as neutrally as possible and be able to form my own opinions about them.

I did grow up with many of these classics, for I am an old man, but Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG never came out here in Europe during the SNES era, so I went into them with 0 nostalgia. I played both of them around the same time, about 10 years ago. Super Mario RPG was what you describe in the intro as being underwhelming. I enjoyed some of it, and understand why people may like it, but I also think nostalgia clouds people's opinions of it. Because it was so hyped up as one of the best games ever created, it did not live up to expectations, which of course were lofty. It was alright, but flawed for sure. So, I was a bit apprehensive about Chrono Trigger afterwards. Eventually I pushed myself to play it despite the doubts, and I do not regret it - that game was an excellent experience, and I understand why people had lauded it as one of the best JRPGs ever made, and would certainly agree with it.

@Shaman Xeed Seiken Densetsu 3 is a great game for sure, but I feel like it wasn't trying to do anything spectacular. It was more so taking what worked from Secret of Mana and getting rid of what didn't. I can tell the developers had passion, but they didn't have ambition, at least none that is too noteworthy, except for the class system. Chrono Trigger feels so ahead of its time in its mechanics and narrative goals. So many things it did are STILL unprecedented. Seamless battle transitions with entirely unique enemy behaviors, bosses that test not only your knowledge of the combat systems but also your proficiency in executing it in a time-sensitive manner, sidequests that are large parts of characterization that can be mostly skipped, a commitment to player agency that goes beyond simply giving players the options they want but also things they might never think of, and so much more. This game aimed for the heavens and sunk its anchor in deep, and I have nothing but respect for its creators.

I've actually started playing the game myself this month, though I had been aware of a few things. What surprised me though, was how they managed to make a Boss Rush that isn't actually a Boss Rush! Let me explain: See, when you fight Lavos, he starts by mimicking the Dragon Tank that you fight shortly after the trial scene. While you had faced a strong fight before him, that was more a miniboss, a glorified HP sponge... but Dragon Tank had a special gimmick. Deal enough damage to Lavos's core, and he changes to the Guardian Robot's strategy. You get to heal up with anything on hand before resuming, and it's basically like that fight again. Then comes Heckran, whose gimmick is to be an early example of "use your fancy new magic" and "pay attention to his appearance to avoid counters". I think he may actually be the monster on the box art in fact! ...Aaand once I got to that phase I was quickly bodied. But I expected this, because I hadn't actually progressed much farther than Heckran AND had been doing a low-level run up through Guardian Robot (wanted to see Spekkio's weakest form), so clearly I wasn't getting anywhere close to winning. But I now know the game will end on a fantastic mechanical review, the likes of which I hadn't even imagined was _possible_ in turn-based RPGs! Before, I was just playing to get credit for an event on RetroAchievements. Now? Now I'm playing because I _want_ to... in addition to the event credit.

About the fireplace scene: as robo comments, its as if an "entity" is reliving its past, and created the gates. Frog comments how that happens with humans when they are about to die. These two pieces of dialogue evoke brilliant symbolism: the entity is the universe itself, and to quote someone probably famous" "humans are the way the universe found to be able to look at itself". At the End of Time (literally, since its an actual place in the game) the Universe is about to die, and is reliving its most remarkable moments, those moments include all the major events in the story, and our characters' eyes are the way the universe sees its history: the extiction of dinosaurs, the fall of the zeal kingdom, wars... but not only does the universe care about huge major events, but also small, private and important ones, such as the day Lucca's mom lost the ability to walk... and therefore created a gate to that exact day. this game is breathtaking.

The two games sit very very high on my list of all time favorite games. Final Fantasy VI introduced me to JRPGs and what kinds of story scenarios could come about with such a varied and well developed set of party members. Chrono Trigger on the other hand showed me the potential of the videogame medium, what games are able to convey and how every detail can be tinkered with to create a fully fleshed out experienced. I couldn't pick a favorite of these two. I love them both for different reasons. Final Fantasy VI and its wonderful cast of characters emotionally resonate with me, and Chrono Trigger scratches the itch for an excellently crafted battle system. And obviously they both excel in most if not all other regards, but those are what I immediately think of when these games come to mind.

Man this takes me back I remember discovering SNES emulator and my good friend recommending Chrono Trigger. This is the rpg that made me fall in love with RPGs I used to replay this game a lot but the thing I love the most that easily takes me back to those days is the amazing musical score. To this day there have been some games that have given me the same highs (I'm looking at you Trails/Kiseki series) and while the developers have gone on to other projects (alot of them now work for Monolith hence why Xenoblade Chronicles has a ton of similar themes and characters). Chrono Trigger is still the RPG genre refined to perfection and it's not long at all if you have not played it I sincerely urge you to check it out (the DS version is the most accessible and best way to play also for the love of God don't get the PS version the load times are ridiculously annoying). The thing that gets me every time is the music there is so much emotion and impact in the music and this was on the SNES. My favorite track that gets me every time is the ending credits track To Far Away Times it is the culmination of your journey solidified in a single musical piece, especially if you have the Epoch. I also love the subtle variations that can occur with that ending (seriously look it up there are a lot). Thanks for the awesome video I truly loved it I'm really glad Chrono Trigger still holds up to this day.

Great (and very thorough) review! This one's been a favorite of mine since its original release. ...Aaaand just because I didn't see a reference to these two optional things in the video ;) The Black Omen can be beaten three times -- as long as you do them in reverse order. Do 1000 AD, then 600 AD, then 12xxx (whatever) BC. Remember to Charm/steal from the queen each time to get 3 sets of Prism-type gear for your party. Also, extra tabs and Megalixirs. Also useful if you do feel the need to grind. Note that, while the BO exists in any given time period, some NPCs will comment on it (e.g. "Isn't the Black Omen lovely today?") as if it were a normal, everyday thing, because -- for them -- it is; it's always just *been there*. On the black treasure chests that react to the Pendant: Same deal as the sunstone. Activate them (Open but do NOT take the item inside) as far back in history as possible; come back to them as far forward as possible, and the item inside will upgrade (e.g. armor that grants fire immunity rather than resistance).

Glad to know you've grown in love with the game, I guarantee whenever you don't have a game to play you'll always come back to this game. So many ways to finish this game, an abundance of alternate endings to experience. ENJOY!

Great work! I'd really like to hear your thoughts on Chrono Cross. It's extremely different in a lot of ways on the surface but it continues the trend of seemingly small choices having big impacts on the game itself, somewhat similar to the 'Resurrect Crono' side quest.

If I remember right, the DS version adds more content for Magus, including Dual Techs. Don't quote me on that though.

I'm sure there's a new ending for Magus that links the game with Chrono Cross.

javierortiz82 yes there is an ending linking to CHRONO Cross. The masked character Guile in Cross was actually meant to be Magus but was rewritten because of the already 40+ playable characters

. What game by 1995 had explored the high sci fi concept of an Alien being responsible for the evolution of life on a planet? (Mass effect thanks you)It’s simple, for its time it was the first big budget game to weave sci-fi and fantasy together as well as explore the concepts of time travel, the concept of alternate time lines, really make you like characters and enjoy learning about them. The music is epic, the pixel art is awesome and the pace is outstanding with plenty to explore but never necessary grinding. I always grounded the bats for Tech points at Magus’s lair though when you run down the stairs you can cyclone all of them in one shot

Hey KingK, Love the new video. The ending gave me chills. I have fond memories going to my friend's house in elementary school and starting a new game on Chrono Trigger and getting as far as we could during our sleepover. It's a special game to me, and it's great to hear a newcomer with such a critical eye can also see it for what it is -- a masterpiece.

It had nothing to do with Chrono Trigger and the name is blatantly misleading. It was far too complex for it's own good.

Joe Baumgart I agree chrono trigger should’ve stayed a single game
