I just want to say I really appreciate your videos. I enjoy your no nonsense, practical (keep it simple) approach, most likely due to you doing it as a professional for years. I'm a Kiwi who is moving to the UK next year. Our Kingfisher is quite a different bird and very flighty in this country. During the winter they live mostly on coastal estuaries. I would love to see a video one day on how you set up for diving shots one day please.

found your video tips very informative. I have been watching kingfishers myself during the lockdown and filming them though not to the standard of yours. In my defence though its a fast flowing upland river flanked by trees both sides (river Taff. just starting to get to know her movements now and fave perches. What will happen though when the water levels rise with winter I have no idea

Hi Mike, thank you for a very informative and interesting video. I noticed in one of your Kingfisher videos, you suggested an aperture of f11 so that all the bird is in focus. I think that was on a micro 4/3 sensor. What aperture would you suggest on a canon full frame sensor? Can you still get good background separation with such a small aperture?
@MikeLaneFRPS
@MikeLaneFRPS 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Andy, When a Kingfisher is sideways on you maybe able to shoot wide open and get it all sharp, but when it turns its back to you more depth of field is needed to get it all sharp as the bird slopes away from you. I often close down a couple of stops in this situation no matter what camera. Seperation depends on how far the background is away from the bird. Other variables are how big in the frame the bird is. Large in the frame will need more DOF, small in the frame less.

Wow, this is great photography of Kingfishers! Great tips and information about how to photograph them. Thank you, this is the kind of information I have been looking for, for a long time. I was however flabbergasted about 21 seconds or so into the video when you stated that to photograph a Kingfisher close to it's nest you need to buy a license. To be forced to pay a fee to the government to photograph a bird if it's within a certain distance from it's nest??? I mean that's horrible to even imagine that being acceptable... I'm in Texas, USA and that kind of governmental intrusion would be unthinkable, at least for now anyway (there are a lot of crazies who would love to enslave us to such onerous regulations but we keep them beat back). I hope you all can take back your country over there and purge the loonies from your government!
@MikeLaneFRPS

Hi, We need to get a licence not buy. It is free, but much form filling, need for two references and a panel of pictures. More form filling after it expires too.
@JoeHTX
@JoeHTX 3 жыл бұрын
@@MikeLaneFRPS Thank you for the reply. That's too much regulation, free or not. I hope you all can regain your freedom over there! All of my ancestors are from England and I've always loved it there, but the way the government is there now, I couldn't take it...

That tray disappeared so I no longer have it. From the video it looks to be about 30cx45cmand 8cm deep. It is a plastic tray supported by wood and polystyrene so it floats. The size does not make any difference. It could be much smaller.

Hi Mike Great video, seems like cheating but it’s not upsetting the birds and wind up with great results I find the kingfishers in New Zealand extremely people shy but I guess with a hide they wouldn’t be upset. I haven’t tried using a hide yet though Thanks Noel

I like the photos but I'm really not a fan of baiting wildlife for photos. Ultimately it puts the wild life in danger becoming more habituated to human behaviour. Also, for me, there's something special about witnessing an animal that is fully in its wild and natural environment and behaving completely in its natural way. Just something I really appreciate when I'm out photographing wild life.
