Part of me hates watching Elvis sing this song. It makes me sob every single time. And yet I watch it often because he sang it so beautifully and passionately. Many of the young are hitching onto the "Elvis train" for the views without truly understanding the power of this man's live performances and his vocal range. I'm so very glad for your heartfelt reactions. Everytime you're surprised by a performance it makes me smile.

When I was 4 years old in 1975 I had the opportunity to sit in the drivers seat of the purple '56 Cadillac Elvis owned that's now in the museum in Memphis. The car wasn't in the best of shape anymore at that time, but a 4 year old wouldn't have thought anything about that. I wouldn't realize just what an incredible opportunity I had until I was in my late 20's and my mom told me how it happened. That car was near where I live in Columbus, Ga. and how I wish I had been in my 20's in '75 when it was sold to James Cantrell who fixed it up, because I would've bought it instead. LOL!

Elvis didn't read "notes" he played by ear. He never had voice or guitar lessons either. Elvis had God-given talents but he worked hard in order to put them all together! He really wanted to sing in a Gospel Quartet but he couldn't harmonize at the time! God had a bigger roll for Elvis to play. He loved all kinds of music, but Gospel was always his favorite! Elvis would sing something Gospel at his Rock-N-Roll concerts!

I agree that it's better to watch Elvis perform, rather than just listen to him. I mean, I could just listen to audio of Elvis 24/7, but I agree that the two come as a package, and it's a beautiful thing to watch him perform. You just can't seem to take your eyes off him. I enjoy the reactions more when I can actually watch Elvis with the person reacting to him, if that makes any sense. 😊

Thank you for this. He was home with the Lord 7 weeks later. He was singing his goodbye. He was so ill and in so much pain. He sung this faster so he could manage to sing it. He could barely speak, but when he had to sing, he soared. Yes, he played the piano all the time, even at home. However he managed to sing this, I don't know. He could barely breathe 😢😢

This is one of those 'classic' songs that dozens of singers, all over the world, have recorded. As others have said he was very ill here and could barely breathe and yet he gives that magnificent performance. BTW he played piano, guitar, bass guitar and drums. Check out basically any song from the '68 special. Loved your reaction. ❤

Yup, Elvis was the GOAT. And right to the end, just 6 weeks before he died, this performance proves it. His voice got better and better with age, almost operatic at this stage. When he did a song, he showed the audience the true potential of the song and how it should be sung, making all others who did the song before him look like amateurs even the original performers of the songs. That's what you felt and made you speechless. Great reaction.👍🏻

There are so many beautiful renditions of this song, but Elvis' performance, for me at least, is by far my favorite. It's his stage presence, his incredible voice, and his passion for every song he sings. You can see the emotion on his face, in his eyes. You can almost see him trembling while performing. Not only in this performance, but in may others too. His love for music was, and still is, unparalleled. He will always be the King. I know he hated being called that, but there is no mistake about that title given to him. It always tears at my heart to watch his performances from 1977, knowing that he would no longer be here with us, but at the same time, watching him perform brings me so much joy. I cry every time I watch this powerful performance, so forgive me if there are any typos, it's kinda difficult to see through the tears. Thank you for helping to keep the memory of this beautiful man alive. Great reaction. Take care. ❤ ps : I went back and fixed my typos before posting this.. lol.

I have to admit, it is a thrill for me to watch you discover Elvis. I was alive when Elvis was alive. I was buying his records and learning all his songs. I guess I take it for granted sometimes that this was a man who walked among us but whose talents were just unbelievably amazing. His tone, his tempo, his style, and his power vocally, is just, awe inspiring. Elvis never wrote any of his songs, so, yes, this was a Righteous Brothers song which Elvis covered and once again just knocked it out of the park. And to think, this man only had 7 weeks left to live when he PERFORMED THIS! He truly was otherworldly!

The extreme physical pain this man was in during this time in his life is unfathomable. I just read a book called destined to die Young were the author did extensive research of his medical records, family history, and she laid out everything that is known thus far. He was battling leukemia of the bone marrow at this time and was in active stage of heart failure during this performance, which to me, makes me love this performance even more as morbid as that sounds. You’re watching a man dig deep to give his fans everything. Elvis Presley was the strongest man and it motivates me to endure anything that is painful, emotionally and physically, he’s an inspiration. This is a moment in history that should always be cherished. PS Charlie Hodge is the fucking man!!

I love your reactions to Elvis and I totally agree about how much he loved his music. I don’t focus on any issues or any imperfect things that were going on like some do (especially at the time) because his voice was so perfect, so whatever else was going on is by the wayside now and should be forgotten, because his voice and love for his music always makes up for everything. His voice was the greatest thing that blocks out everything else because all that counts now is his voice. He was an amazing man in all ways. Some of your reactions that I see of Elvis was beautiful and his music is what should be remembered. instead of focusing on his imperfections, it should be focused on his perfection, which was his music and his voice so I love what you said, and that’s what counts, and that’s what he would want to count is his voice and his music, not anything else that anyone can point out. His voice and his contribution to music is the thing that will always be remembered. Thank you for your reaction This is one thing that he would always want to be remembered, and hopefully someday will be what it is remembered the most. Also, the fact that people are still talking about him this. many years after he has died, is an amazing accomplishment among all of his others.

Jane H commenting …. I always cry my way through this, knowing he was so very sick, so short of breath with such an enlarged heart, & several other serious medical issues, & he passed just 8 weeks later. But Elvis was a very spiritual man with a great faith in Jesus & God, & I believe that is where he found the strength to do such a stunning performance. His performance of How Great Thou Art in this same concert is also incredible. The man holding the microphone is the Late Charlie Hodge, who as well as playing guitar & harmonising with Elvis, & being his right hand man on stage, was one of Elvis’ closest friends & had been with Elvis for most of his career. Elvis & Charlie loved one another as old friends, & Charlie was one of the few people that Elvis actually trusted. Watching Elvis struggling to breath before sitting down at the piano, must have broken Charlie’s heart, & after Elvis’ death, Charlie made it his mission to travel all over America & Europe, to tell the true story about Elvis, as so many lies were being told by his former bodyguards & so-called friends … his bodyguards were also his friends, or should I say he considered them to be, but most proved otherwise. Once their meal ticket was gone, they were out there selling their half-truths & outright lies to the highest bidder. Thank you for a wonderful reaction.

He was so sick, many have referred to the "Elvis Presley Destined to Die Young" book by Sally Hoedel. She shows the real problems he had all his life resulting from his mother parents who were first cousins. Back in the old south it was often done, but late people found that it really caused inbreeding problems. Elvis combination of genes was not normal. He was an Alpha 1 Gene which is rare but some do inherit it. His mother died at 46, and her two brothers were also in their 40's when they died. She had liver disease, and heart problems and weight issues. Elvis was born with a twisted colon, in 1935 and seldom got medical care, they were dirt poor. He had Liver disease, and an enlarged heart. He had early onset Glaucoma when he first started in Vegas. He actually had eye surgery to save one eye. It went largely un noticed by the public. When he runs off state in the tour vids he has someone on each arm leading him off the stage. The bloating was part of the liver disease, the book even states that had he never taken a pill he still would have died young. He told singer Katy Westmoreland he'd be died by 40. Anyway for a little perspective on why he looked so different, but sang like an angel. Thank you for your gracious reaction.

I am so grateful for these reaction videos. Ive been an Elvis fan for nearly 50 years and it has been painful to see the prejudices and false accusations blemishing his image and legacy. He was a beautiful person that brought so much joy to millions during his lifetime. And because he was so far beyond any other performer, before or after, people of today cant even fathom the talent, the charm, the charisma, that he had. These reaction videos, I believe, expose a whole new generation or 2, to the real deal...Not just the pop culture caricatures

The essence of Elvis is probably gospel music. He often transforms songs into a gospel-tinged sound. Here, his arpeggios on the piano, the big voice, and the passion and care to communicate feelings, suggest he was again going beyond just the surface meaning of a pop song.

This is exactly why his fans will always be fans..he is a legend absolutely no one will ever come close to his talent and personal touch to all genres of music ..enjoy your journey with him and his music..you should react to some of his gospel which is where his voice will make your cry

I write this with tears rolling down my face. Your reaction was beautiful. He was singing it quickly here because he so much wanted to be able to do it. He was in so much pain and that man still got on that stage and performed. The words 'I'll be coming home wait for me" .. he was home with the Lord 6 weeks later. You are wonderful, thank you so much. He had a piano in his home and would spend evenings playing it & singing xx

What a man ❤ What a voice What a master of musical arrangement. Such a passion and love for music and his fans. There will never be another like him. He poured every ounce of himself into this performance and took it to another stratosphere. That last " I neeeeeeeeeeeed your love" ❤ Wow wow wow wow! 👌 I love that you 'get' him. Blessed is definitely the best way to describe how it feels to hear him sing. I am really enjoying your reactions. Thank you 😊

Elvis died 7 weeks after this was recorded. The tv special was not aired till after his death. It is very hard for the fans from that time to watch this performance. When ever I see a picture of him dressed in the Mexican Dial jumpsuit it gives me a sad vibe.

You are such a beautiful spirit, and I am so glad that you get why Elvis was and is such an historical figure. As it's true, because he was white, he was the first major rock n roll star. But, too, you can learn, that he went through hell because of that and received death threats and all other type of deterrents yet fought on. But I believe you would now agree, that it wasn't because he was the world's first superstar that he is remembered, but it's because of performances like this. Honestly, too, I love seeing your heart and enjoyment and happiness after watching a performance, I wish we were best friends!!! When, truthfully, I guess with the internet bringing us all together we could be. As after watching you now, several times, I want to say - honestly - I totally love you as a fellow human being. God bless you, my friend! ~ Christopher Tyler

“All you can do is watch this man and be in awe.” Beautifully stated. He really almost takes your breath away, whether you expect him to or not. He manages to do it every time.
