@@maxnetirtimon4121 ruppel was never campture , after that answer the germans attacked once again only to be pushed back with casualties . The next day the greek command ordered ruppel to surrender . Supposedly the first cousin of my grand father fought there ( literally found out about this this summer ) , he later on joinned the resistance . I have soooo many war stories from my family . By the way one does simply captures Greece without being defeated later on by a resistance movement , turks paid the price same with germans the italians and bulgarians ( this includes the collaborators )

@Plo Koon indeed in NA Italian troops were numerous but the British had 10 times better equipment (with American aircrafts and tanks too) and were supplied constantly (thanks to their colonies). Italian troops were starving and didn't have even the nafta for the few transport trucks they had.

All Balkan states need to develop much, much closer ties. They all have diminishing populations and need to rectify this ASAP, lest none of them exist in 100 years. The Craiova Group is a start. Let's hope they build on it. No more hostility in the Balkans.

Even though Greece lost, you have to hand it to them for holding out as long as they did. I honestly suspect them holding out that long delayed Germany enough that it led to Germany getting bogged down in the winter in Russia.

Indeed, by the time the Germans (Nazis) got back to Russia, rains had turned the fields into mud (No roads at that time !). The Red Army commenced a counter attack all the way to Berlin. Therefore, The Italians saved the world by joining the Axis.

Dimitris Itsios stayed back with his men and killed 230+ germans on fort roupel when he ran out of ammo and got surrounded the german officer pointed at the bodies of the dead germans and Itsios said ''i did my duty'' and the german officer replied ''Now i have to do mine'' and executed him, ending his life on April 6 1941. A true hero

Dimitrios Itsios went through thousands of rounds of ammunition before he ran out and was captured! He was saluted by the German soldiers for displaying valor of not leaving his post. The German commander then order his execution by shooting him dead. Marinos Mitralexis graduated as a Second Lieutenant from the Hellenic Air Force Academy in summer 1940. On November 2, a squadron of 15 Italian CANT Z.1007 bombers, with Fiat CR.42 fighter escorts, headed towards Thessaloniki. Soon they were spotted and intercepted by Greek PZL P.24 fighters of the 22nd Squadron. During the dogfights, three of the bombers were shot down, while the rest reached their targets, and then started to return to their base in Albania. Mitralexis, who had already shot down one bomber, was now out of ammunition, so he aimed the nose of his PZL P. 24 right into an enemy bomber's tail, smashing the rudder and sending the bomber out of control. He then had to make an emergency landing near the crashed bomber. Having landed, Mitralexis captured the four surviving crew members of the enemy aircraft using his pistol. For this extraordinary feat, Mitralexis was promoted and awarded a number of medals, including Greece's highest award for bravery, the Gold Cross of Valour.

Truth is Italians and Greeks are cousins, if not brothers, Mussolini may have wanted to invade Greece but the Italian army had no stomach for attacking Greece. The soldiers identified with the enemy. Respect to my Italian friends and shame on Hittlers Germany and the Nazi scum. My comment does not degrade the heroic fighting of the Greeks in WW11 but shows empathy to the Italians sent to Greece.

Kind reminder to the people commenting how the Metaxas Line was similar to the Maginot Line: The Metaxas Line was originally built to thwart a potential Bulgarian invasion after the Thessaloniki Accord in 1938 (that led to the re-armament of Bulgaria after WW1). It wasn't built to withstand a potential Nazi German attack or anything of that sort.

Actually, it is not the flag of SFRJ. It is the flag of the Democratic Federal Yugoslavia, which was a transitional state that came about as a compromise between the royal government in exile and Tito. Peter II was still formally the king, while Tito was appointed as the Prime Minister. Easy way to distinguish this flag from the later SFRJ's one is by the size of the red star. DFJ used a smaller red star that only covered the middle of the white field on the flag, while SFRJ used a bigger star that expanded into the red and blue fields as well. It is still the wrong flag to use in this instance, they should have used the royal flag.

the sad part no the greeks where almost out of ammo on all sides. they would have been defeated but killed so many Italians the italians would still be humiliated. Italian troops where good but NCos and commanders where deployed based on loyality to musslion and not how good they where at their job

@@lordpfeiffer8490 The irony was that Hitler did not even want Mussolini to attack Greece. A neutral Greece would have been far better for the German plans to invade the Soviet Union. Mussolini fucked it up (but considering the perverse nature of Nazi ideology, I am kind of glad he fucked up although the Soviets were murderous bastard as well).

I don't know about the rest of Europe, but here, history textbooks are fairly inaccurate, fitting the nationalistic narrative of each country. Greek textbooks are fairly accurate, but not entirely perfect. Also, the way history is being taught, not only in school, but also from parents and grandparents. How everyone else hates our beloved [insert country name] and took stuff from us. And how we're going to take everything back and become Great [insert country name].

We captured some Italian tanks tho later. One of these tanks was renamed "Elli's avenger" as tribute to the ship "Elli" cuz the Italian submarine Delfino sank her during peacetime on 15 August 1940.

In the end, Germany lost the war heavily, with Greece being among the winners. The time they won fighting against both Italy and Germany was crucial to the final destruction of the Axis.

My great grandfather fought in this war, he was a farmer from Macedonia, but he joined the army, he kept fighting until the Greek Army surrendered, then he went home and lived through the occupation. He was killed during the Greek Civil War.

@@donq2957 The Allies also commited crimes(like bombing Greek civilians in Pireaus killing about 150 and just 4 Germans without any military installations being there!). But it is not the same; the Germans showed unbelievable brutality and not only the Nazi regime, but the Germans as a people. The Italians also occupied Greece but were much more humane and I am not aware of a single incident of war crime.

As a Greek, I actually enjoy these episodes and I have to admit that I feel proud about the achievements of my ancestors. I wrote it mainly because rarely will you find in the greek history books references about the battle of Kleidi between the Germans and the Greek-Australian troops or even for the 3-days-long battle of Thermopylae,which really contributed to the successful evacuation of the Commonwealth forces from Greece.

The battle of Greece was a tactical victory for Italy and Germany, but a strategic loss. It contributed to its eventual downfall losing precious time due to the Greek struggle vs both Italy and Germany and also by tying down so many of their forces in Greece. In the end, even though occupied for a time Greece was among the winners.

It was strategically necessary. The reason Germany lost was simply due to the fact that 80 percent of Russian men born in 1923 would not live to see the end of World War 2

Greece was part of the allies and the allies won the war. So Greece was among the winners. Germany among the losers. Thats clear. Germany lost the war because the odds were overwhelming after the USA also joined the front. Germany had no chance in the long run. Thats why Blitzkrieg was the main hope, but not enough.

@@stevencooper4422 that is a common myth that Russia had droves if men to throw at the Germans. As the ride started to turn, it was becoming more apparent that they just out soldiered them. Add to that Gemany had horrible logistics and suffered continuously from lack of fuel/ oil, it was only a matter if time.

Greece in WW2 is sort of like Serbia in WW1. In WW1 Austro-Hungaria was unable to defeat Serbia 1v1 so they had asked for their allies, Germany and Bulgaria to attack Serbia from north and east in 3v1 and then of course they succeeded in occupying it.

Parallels don't end there. In both cases the attacking power did not commit sufficient forces to owerpower the smaller country. In WW1 the Austro-Hungarian forces committed to the 1914. attempts to conquer Serbia were by pre-war plans actually intended for DEFENSE against Serbia, given that A-H also had to fight Russia - it was numerically inferior to the defending Serbian army. In WW2 Italy, in spite of all the commitments in Africa against the UK, likewise invaded Greece with an army numerically inferior to the defending Greeks. In both cases the invaders had more equipment, but not enough to offset the numerical deficiency. For all the skill and courage of both defending armies this should not be overlooked.

I've been seeing this being bandied around for years, and I'm not a fan of the mental gymnastics involved. If we're gonna count Greek resistance from the day Mussolini declared war, it's only fair to count French resistance from the day they declared war on Germany. Otherwise, if we're gonna count French resistance from the day the Germans actually invaded them, we should count Greek resistance the same way - and Crete doesn't count, because then we'd have to count all the French islands and colonies that never fell to the Germans.

@@Hypernefelos Very true, it also says nothing about the number of troops (compared to number of own troops), the terrain or the weather they were facing. I would think that germany sent more troops towards France than towards Greece. The terrain in france for the most part might have been easier for attacking than in greece, Norway on the other hand was still in winter conditions, the norwegian army wasn't fully mobilized, and the allies evacuated earlier while the german numbers there were quite low...)

Yugoslavia resisted for 12 days actually. But it was against the full might of the German Wehrmacht in its prime from the onset. And not counting the subsequent 4 years of guerrilla warfare of course... France resisted for 9 months actually.

Bullshit, thats not true. The German army needed only two weeks to conquer Greece. The war began 6. April and ended 21.April with the greece capitulation.

@B Whit No offense toward the ANZAC core in Crete, but what really devastated the Fallshirmjaeger, was the Cretan civilian militias. They would ambush them in strategic points or wait them as they fall to pitchfork them dead. At least one third of the German casualties in Crete was caused by this war of attrition the civilian population staged.

The British habit of splitting up the Australian forces, a single division in Greece, a single division in Tobruk, a single division in Lebanon and a single division in Singapore, and expecting them to form the backbone of Commonwealth forces. I mean sure they were good, but they didn’t have red capes and wear red underpants on the outside of their tights. If British command had concentrated 3 or 4 Aussie divisions in one or two places where they were really needed instead of spreading them all over the place they might have had more success in Greece or Malaya and Singapore.

@@doktorcool3740 Exactly. Funny thing is that the Italians in WW1 betrayed the Central Powers because they were promised territorial gains by the Entente. They did never receive what was promised which was one puzzle piece in the rise of the fascists who then gained territories albeit only for a short time thanks to the help of the Germans. Many of the commanding officers were probably old enough to have fought in WW1 and it must have been humiliating for Italians to see that the very men they betrayed decades prior were now saving their asses and even gaining them territories. I wonder how many at the time felt that they were betting on the wrong horse in WW1...

Any soldier that works the rearline in any army is the greatest unsung hero. It's terrifying the prospects that If you don't do your job your fellow comrades that are retreating and hurt will be caught on the absolute backfoot and killed completely. You are the last line of defense in your army and it's up to you to give as much time as possible for them to retreat. I have massive respect for those that truely put it all on the line like that, and I feel you did an excellent job visualizing what that looked like.

@@harzemsahtekin4441 What do you mean exactly;; The Greeks did not lose from the Turkish army. The Greeks in time of war with Turks made civil war. This is because the "great powers" (England, USA, France and oder countrys) stopped giving weapons to the Greeks. They disagreed on whether the Greeks should reach Ankara or whether they should stop in the cities near the sea, where there was a Greek population. This was the reason why there was a great disagreement in Greece about where the Greek campaign would end!! Ataturk was sent by the Germans with a lot of money! A part of the Ottoman Empire had to be kept because it was in the interest of the West. The Greek army began to have no weapons and then the Greek soldiers began to leave their positions. The Turkish army led by Ataturk and with the help of Germany and Russia managed the impossible. Ataturk ordered the massacre of the Greek unarmed population. This order was a series of many war crimes, which were later called Genocide !! The Turks slaughtered women, children and other unarmed civilians. Turkey is not a nation. Ataturk kept what existed from the Ottoman Empire and rebuilt Turkey. With fanatical education and Islam he made everyone believe that they are Turks! There are no Turks! Your DNA belongs to others! I challenge you to test your DNA !!

prisoners werent send to concentration camps to begin with. They were sent to POW camps. Only exception might be some soviet prisoners,but even then in general they went to POW camps. Though in the case for soviet soldiers it was better in a concentration camps than in a german pow camp. The death rate was comparable to later extermination camps there, far higher then the usual concentration camps.

If I recall correctly, soldiers too were not held up as POWs, just surrendered their arms and sent home.

the wermacht and even the ss where so amazed by the greeks winning the italians and fighting fiercely german troops with little supplies, that where the few times they respect the enemies by just let them go proudly back to their houses..... greeks were of the few nations praised for their fight and after for the resistance from both allies and axis

The Germans didn't have 1900 heavy tanks in 1941. The heaviest ones were short barreled panzer IVs. Heavy tanks such as the Tiger or Panther would see action the following year and not in such numbers

Fun fact; The commander of the Greek forces in Albania, George Tsolakoglou, will become the primeminister of the first collaborationist government in occupied Greece.

Another fun fact : most nazi collaborators in Greece would never be punished and were even rewarded after the war for fighting the people who resisted the fascists .

@@saillok4923 Yes, all collaborationist PMs in Greece for example, got light sentences. Additionally, Greek collaborationist militias intergrated in the Greek Army after the war.

Tsolakoglou was sentenced to death for treason, mostly because he surrendered without being given the order to( though they later changed it to jail for life). He died from leukemia in 1948

@@spyrostsoum6874 Logothetopoulos also got life imprisonment, but got released in 1951. That's what i mean "light sentence". If it wasnt for cancer Tsolakoglou would be out too.

"Tsolakoglou" is a stand-in for "collaborator" since then, though some might argue it's a touch unfair to him (I have no opinion on the matter). History judges all.
