I used to travel to Yemen frequently from 1997-2006. I remember it being very safe and a fun experience. I even lived there at one point for a couple of years and drove around the whole country with friends to experience ancient Arabia. Its so sad seeing what has happened to it after 2015.

Yemen had/has so much potential. Its well known amongst yemeni society that ali abdallah saleh had a role in assassinating Ibrahim al hamdi seeing that both the zaydi elites and the saudis wanted him dead and ali abdallah saleh's 30+ year rule was just him playing those 2 sides. He stated it himself saying he was "dancing on the head of snakes" in one of the last interviews he did before he was killed. As for the allegations against salim rubae ali, theyre false. He was a strong supporter of unification and intense talks about unification started in his time. Also, south yemen was attempting to move away from socialism under rubae ali's time which brought him alot of problems from the socialists. Theres so much to talk about here but I'd say this is a good synopsis of what went on in yemen. Also, during the reign of imam yahya hamid ad din, there was a large role of saudi arabia calling on britain to bomb large port cities in yemen such as taiz and al hudeida to weaken Yemen economically. Now, it looks like thwre is no fiture for yemen sadly. Both sides (north and south) wre supported by nations who have no good will for them.

I am from South Yemen, and thank you for this documentary. You mentioned many facts, but I would like to comment on a topic that you may not have mentioned. At the time of British colonization, South Yemen was divided into sultanates. Then the British united these sultanates in South Yemen and established the state of the Emirates of South Arabia in The end of the fifties, the beginning of the sixties, but in the end, the National Front and its followers were the ones who took control and imposed themselves on the ground. Therefore, the British handed over power to them after independence in November of 1967 in Geneva, Switzerland. This is for history. My grandparents were sheikhs from the Shabwa region, specifically the Upper Al-Awlaqi sheikhdom!

Kind of surprised how you forgot to mention that the Sassanid persians had yemeni allies and the area is noted on maps as having been part of the Sasanian empire. Meaning Iranian influence or control of Yemen goes back centuries. Interestingly that was before Islam appeared in the area. They understood the strategic location Yemen had, just as they do now.

That was a good summery, however, there's a slight correction to be made. Asir in Saudi Arabia was never part of Yaman, contrary to what some claim. The confusion often happens amongst historians because in pre and early Islamic history, all the southern parts of the Arabian Peninsula were referred to as Yaman. This is well before the establishment of any form of the Yamani state. I hope that one day Yaman will become a peaceful place and that we can all enjoy the beauty of its land and its people ...

By the time he took all those provinces, he was in his late 50s. Going against the formal British protectorate would have been a suicide mission. Let's not forget Abdul Aziz conquered on the back of horses and camels when Aden was a mini London in the Middle East.

@@wisestcrazyboy He wouldn't have been able to take Sanaa to go deep into Aden. Yemen is very mountanious with large population, the regions he took were against the mutwakilite dynasty so they helped him against them, but the rest of Yemen would be extremely difficult to advance through.

When South Yemen united with the North, this was the biggest mistake. As a southern citizen in South Yemen, we want to disengage from North Yemen. And restore South Yemen to what it was before, an independent country. Soon, South Yemen will declare its second independence.

Long story short, Israel targeted civilians while lebanon targeted actual military targets and were extremely successful. Israel was soundly defeated by lebanon for the third time and will be defeated a 4th time if they attempt to invade lebanon again.

I do not think so. First it was more Peoples Front of Judea, second I believe it was more a historical joke about the various factions in Judea during the time Life of Brian is located (in the 60s AD for example the various groups did in part fight each other even inside Jerusalem while the Romans were alredy crushing one rebel stronghold after the other).
