Eliud Kipchoge is the greatest marathoner of all time. He is the marathon world record holder and two times Olympic gold medalist. Recently I had two conversations with Eliud, one recorded Zoom and I got an opportunity to join my friend Lewis for a coffee with Eliud in Eugene, OR. He has been a huge inspiration to me, in training, racing and daily life.
We discuss Eliud’s strategies for success, running advice for non elite runners and his new Universal Pictures movie, "The Last Milestone”. This is an incredible film that documents his journey of successfully attempting to break the 2 hour marathon mark and leave his place in history.

“Enjoy, when you are running, please enjoy.” It seems like Kipchoge is always relaxed and smiling when he runs. It’s funny to me that a lot of people view running as a kind of masochistic torture but for me, it’s the best part of my day. It’s so important to take pleasure in it.
@FlorisGierman

Yes he looks so smooth and relaxed. In one of the interviews I heard him talk about smiling being a coping mechanism for dealing with tough spots too, that it can help make him feel better, which I have experienced as well on race day. Great point, running is such a joy and important to see it that way. Cheers Jonathan!

Absolutely!! Each running day when I awaken, I smile since I'm excited to go for my run. Agreed- it absolutely isthe best part of my day. And as long as you keep it something that you look forward to, you can't help but get in better shape and gradually improve. Like EK said, run, enjoy, and just finish your run. Dedicate yourself to that, and make it consistent and regular, and the rest takes care of itself.

I guard my daily run time viciously. I get my son or my job always trying to steal that time and I get nasty about it. That’s the only part of the whole day I’m truly at peace. Well. That and the 30min everyday I spend practicing piano. Just let me have my freaking run/piano time so I can stay sane!!! 😂 I literally almost lost my job over it because my boss was wanting me to join these meetings in the morning when I typically run. I flat out said. No. I was ready to walk out the door over it! After some argument he finally backed down.

I just love this man. Dear mr. Kipchoge, you don’t just inspire the youth, you inspire this middle aged, very average runner. Especially coming back after a long injury, your advice to be consistent and patient in training, not just to improve but to stay injury free, is so relevant and practical. Thanks for being so humble and be able to speak to us mere mortals who won’t be breaking any records but who just want to run and enjoy it.

Here is my takeaway, I have always found that a focus on enjoyment was the best way for me to improve in my running.When i have pushed too hard or put pressure on myself i have found it can turn the whole process into a real slog.So it's really great to hear the advice from Kipchoge on "just enjoying your running¨ which is something i have found to be true myself.Great interview and keep up the great work Floris.

The quote I run by, as 59 year-old runner who just runs 7 miles, every other day, is: "Run hard, run long, but NEVER outrun your of running." I constantly ask myself during my runs, "Are you having fun?" If the answer is "no", I back off until I'm challenged, yet still enjoying the run. It's never failed me! Don't outrun your joy of running, no matter what.

@FlorisGierman
@FlorisGierman 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! That was a great takeaway. The only thing to be careful about here is that I asked this specifically in the context of how he optimized his performance for his Sub 2 Hour Marathon running. So he already had a massive base and from there was able to add a lot of medium to high intensity running, long runs, fartleks, intervals, and also easy running. For some non-elite runners too many of these session can definitely lead to injury, so good to find that balance.

How important a goal is is determined by ones motivation. If you say you are motivated to succeed - Find excuses TO train, not the opposite.

Running day in and day out one can forget to enjoy it. It can be all about watching your watch and missing the scenery around you. I like that Kipchoge reminded us to enjoy our running and just finish your runs each day.

Same here, some of that was new to me as well. 2.5 years of going back to the drawing board and re-strategizing to shave off 26 seconds (46 seconds actually). Talk about dedication! 🙏

Believing you can do it and dedication But also to enjoy your running Im 55 and didnt start running any distance training and events until my late 30's early 40's Im still as slow as a herd of turtles but ive improved considerably since my early days of running This year alone ive set many pb's from 1k up to a 50k ultra the only event distance missing is my fastest 1/2 marathon Im getting quicker and my goal is to break 1:40 Eliud never fails to inspire me to improve and i still have a great love of running Thanks again for posting this interview 👍🙂🏃‍♂️

What i got. Running should not be a slog. It should be something you enjoy doing it and be consistent. After you have done this many times, it becomes second nature and you improve over time.

Great interview! I think my biggest takeaway is that running experience builds on itself, whether Kipchoge talks about taking the lessons from Monza to Vienna or being consistent in training and having all types of runs leading to his success. It all contributes to improvement as a runner. Glad I discovered this interview. Really inspiring!

So interesting to hear how he keeps up his training year round. I had always been taught periodization meaning taking periods of much reduced training. I will research this further. And always good to not be afraid of reaching and "failing" and learning. If you are not making "mistakes" you are not growing.
