The thing I’ve taken most from this video is the comparison of self confidence to an umbrella protecting you from the rain. The umbrella doesn’t stop the rain, but it gives you a shield to allow you to go about what you’re doing. I’ve had a couple of events not go to plan and it affects self confidence a lot. You begin to doubt whether you can improve on your previous performances. The fear of not performing has been there my last few events and I’m in the process of rebuilding that self confidence. When I rebuild it fully, I’ll be protected from those events that have gone wrong and be able to believe I can go out and beat my times. It’s a great analogy.

147 doesn't sound like low HR to me. That's about 85% of my max. I've just came back from a 2.5 hour cycle and my average was 128 (74% max)

Kipchoge apparently can burn 1.5g+/min of fat, that's 800+ kcal per hour in fat alone. Technically he could have done a sub 2 marathon without ingesting anything and what he did consume most likely had just a placebo affect. Killian Jornet can also run for hours in mountains without food. It's all in the training.

Question from a newbie: In regards with MAF180, should I not go past my MAF heart rate (150 for me) or should I go off my average heart rate? Any feedback would be much appreciated!

Great, great interview. My favorite. Never knew this guy. I bought his book before I finished. Really good advice for someone who has struggled with ultras. Look forward to reading his articles too.

My favourite bit is Eliud's focus on consistency. It's the best way for any athlete to reach the next level or the next goal.

Kipchoge should leave Kaptagat and go back to the other side of Eldoret back home to Kapsabet! I was at Kiptum's funeral! when all the rest of us went at it! so where did team NN hide?! many questions regarding Kiptum's death are not answered! you who don't live or hang out here in nort rift valley and only go by what your media reports to you should just shut up!

Great informational video on MAF however I'm kinda prefer the 80/20 vs MAF because as a runner living in South East Asia with average temperate 30celcius and 80%+ humidity makes it incredibly hard to train using MAF method unless I have to run/walk, how does summer worked for you did you just simply run at a lower pace instead? Totally agreed that aerobic engines need years not months to fully built up. Just getting back to running after 4 months break with IT band injury probably due to first marathon training plan for 5 months in 2023 and suddenly the pain just happened out of sudden and you just can't run for longer even if you want to luckily with some rehab exercise and focusing more on lower effort run I'm finally able to run a half marathon event last Sunday without pain or subsequent injury, definitely will continue to run slow to run fast for foreeable months/years😄

I'm sorry my man, but are you doing the marathon or any of these runs you are filming with in Zone 2 or are you going with a Normal HR / or other Zone?

So I’m 73 and if I use this method my training zone 2 would be 107. Is that correct? My average run today for 3 miles was 130 -140. I could talk and I feel like it is not a fast pace or that I’m stressed. I use a Garmin: my resting hr is 45, my max is 173. Am I supposed to run at a hr about 107? Really confused. Thanks

48:15 -- It is just over the top how humans are evolving, slowly, but evolving, having a software developer, tell them things as simple as 'did I sleep well last night'? Humans are turning into total followers of someone elses ways. WITHOUT human thoughts on any subject, you are a mindless entity. This mindless, no thinking state, seems to be where mankind is heading. Do you understand this path? Nope lol

Thanks Floris - I really think you’re one of the best interviewers around because you create a lot of space for your guests to shine. A key takeaway for me was the tip to get creative and design your own adventure challenge in order to get more fulfilment from exercise 😊

This is my favorite conversation so far. I'm definitely going to read ultra something and his other books. The two of you are absolutely hilarious together. Thanks for the advice, I'll try eating all my gels asap for my next race 😂

Most people will be running a marathon well below LT2 so you'd be surprised how little carbs you need during a marathon if you have trained correctly. If you're having gels during your 1-2hr training runs, good luck.

MAF method is too high for me. It's OK for the very upper limit but around 10 bpm lower is better for me! Always pushing your z2 to the upper limit is a big mistake.

Do we also adjust max HR for climate. I live in an extremely hot and humid place. Temp is 30-35 degrees C most times.

Most of the stories I hear about MAF training are from people who ran pretty fast at some point in their earlier lives. Does it still work even for people who have never been able to run fast in their whole life? Scott was a student athlete. Kofuzi was in the cross-country team during high school.

‘Running is where you are free’. I love how running makes me feel. I read a quote recently which says ‘Freedom is running wild over untamed land with no notion that any moment exists beyond the one you are living in.’ Huge respect and admiration for Eliud and what he brings to this world and thank you Floris for caring about our community and bringing us this interview.

Well, where does one even begin? Thank you for sharing this conversation with a modern day philosopher, actually two philosophers. 🙌 The one thing that hit me, treat yourself as the best one, the best trained on the starting line. And that comes from preparation, the mindset, belief and the joy one finds in running. Love this episode ❤️ and can’t wait to see Eluid take to the trails for an ultra!

This story is interesting .. First he says just to cut out junk foods as your daily eating. *100% correct.* Next he depleted his body storage of glycogen (sugars \ CARBS) so low that it was a danger to his life. -- Listen and learn from this guy if you wanna become a faster runner AND avoid the mistakes he made along his life.

I'm beginning to start running again, and I think that the key as Kipchige said is consistency. Results may take months even years to come, bit if you are consistent you will eventually reap the rewards.

For me, the best takeaway from the video is at 23:22 Learning to embrace the sweetness of the pain when you're running for long. Today I ran my first ever 10K in a hilly trail and I was almost stopping but I ignored my thoughts and kept going, at the 7KM all the pain had vanished and I could just see my legs floating in the air, the pain helped me realize some hidden energy reserve that prior to that I had never utilized. I'm planning to continue running on that hilly trail more times and gradually make it x2, then x4 to become my own marathon.

Man Floris must feel like embarrassed to only run a little under 3 hours and talking to Kipchoge. Its like telling God you only went to church once or twice a year.. Like that's not too bad but okay. God would be like WTF?

I have a friend who got his wheel last year in Tokyo and this marathon also happened to be recognized by Guinness World Records as the most people obtaining that wheel of medals. I just mentioned this because you touched my heart with your words of appreciation to your family. You really had me going as well. Im preparing for my first marathon in the midst of some chaotic but manageable issues at the same time. Congratulations on your great accomplishment and thank you so much for sharing your experience, wisdom and compassion.

It would have been great if you asked him about weight training in his program and what motivational/self help books he is reading or has read. It sounds like he has a couple of great books in him whenever he decides he has the time to do them. Its a shame about all the stupidity and negativity aimed at him. He is obviously a very spiritual being and sensitive to that kind of crap. However, he has shown the capability of being extremely resilient. What a great human being! Very nice interview.
