AI in Games: GOAP: • Building the AI of F.E...
F.E.A.R is a first person shooter released by Monolith Productions way back in 2005. It tells the story of Paxton Fettel, an escaped psychic commander who has hijacked an army of military clones. You play as the "Point Man" FEAR's newest recruit who must find and stop Fettel. However during the Point Man's journey he is haunted by the vicious spirit of Alma Wade who seems to have a mysterious connection to both the Point Man and Paxton Fettel.
F.E.A.R was one of the most badass shooters and loved fps games when it first came out. It was more than just a scary game, it was a leap in the genre with it's kinetic gameplay and excellent AI. While the series would continue with FEAR 2 and FEAR 3 they were never able to full recapture what made FEAR 1 so special.
Now fifteen years after release does F.E.A.R still hold up? Or has Alma lost her bite? Find out in this in depth FEAR game review.
F.E.A.R was developed by Monolith Productions and published by WB Interactive. It is currently available on PC through GOG and Steam with additional versions on PS3 and XBOX 360

Hey everybody! I hope all of you are having an excellent October and treating yourselves to some terrifying video games. FEAR was a breath of fresh air to play though again, I honestly forgot how fun and scary this title was! What horror games have you all been playing? Any recommendations for me? Please let me know in the comments. Also I do have a review coming for The Ancient Gods. I really wish I could have done it this week but unfortunatley my schedule was a bit too uncooperative. Either way be looking for it next week! F.E.A.R. is quite easily in my top 5 favorite games of all time list. It's just timeless. I'd love to see you take on F.E.A.R.'s expansions. To me, the first expansion Extraction Point is the true end to the F.E.A.R. franchise. The height that was never reached again. I have no idea what they were doing with Perseus mandate though... Your channel deserves a lot more attention. If you ever want to hit me up for a collab at some point feel free! I'd love to throw some of my viewers at you.

What's scary/sad is no major dev studio are making games that even try to be like FEAR. Well, there is a small indie game called Trepang2 that is trying to be a spiritual successor to FEAR...

I remember this game back in 2006 when it came to the 360 platform it caught my eye and I love the game very much I just started playing the game again and man the combat and the atmosphere were great as I remember, Alam Wade to me is still one of the best scary characters of all time and I felt so bad for her when I found out more of her backstory, I would like to see this game get a remaster or a remake which ever will work for me

Right before this game came out in beta, my PC died, and I only had enough money to buy a piece of crap video card. Even though I had to run it at almost minimum settings, I played that beta so much that I ended up frying that cheap video card too. Thankfully I saved up enough money to get a real video card, and was able to play the full game in its full glory shortly after launch.

@@IllegallySighted yea back then we were poor too but a lot of fun back then. I used to play Crysis in with very low settings. No money to buy a better card. Also Games don’t come out every month like nowadays. Sometimes i play a game for 4-5 times and know all the in and out. Now everything is different...games come out every week but nothing stay in the memory. Maybe we are just getting old.

In my quest to play through all my shooters, I played through F.E.A.R. and the expansions. Still great to this day! It has the limited weapon thing from Halo that I don't like much (although it's less annoying in F.E.A.R.) , but the best shotgun ever, that awesome particle weapon, and some great atmosphere. This is a fantastic game and anyone who likes shooters should play it at least once!

Very well said. I would absolutely love Monolith to go back to developing first person shooters again. They made some of the best ones ever, and this one is one of my top two or three of all time. A remaster would be fantastic! I’m not really much into many multiplayer games, but even I played the hell out of this one in multiplayer.

I sadly missed out on multiplayer because my internet was crap when I first played back in the day, I bet it was a blast though. Yeah Monolith's canon of games is so impressive. AVP 2 was the first titles I played of theirs and it's still my favorite (mostly for nostalgia reasons 😁)

As a big fan of FEAR and of Monolith's FPS games, I'm afraid they have long passed their "golden age". Most of the people responsible for their classic titles have left the company long ago, they don't even own the rights to many of their own IPs thanks to bureaucrats nonsense, and WB is deadset on making them create movie tieins instead of continuing their own games. Heck, even FEAR 3 represented this decline by denying Monolith a chance to create it and FEAR Online was virtually a nail on the franchise's coffin. At least we have the series as it currently is. I don't care for a remake or reboot, so long as people continue to enjoy this franchise and take a look at Monolith's other games.

Agreed...I started up a WISP (Wireless Internet Service Provider) called Rapidwave in 2003 and in 2007 we started hosting online MP games. Hosted Farcry 1, Farcry 3, Unreal Gold, Unreal Tournament 2004 & UT 3, original Quake & Quake 2, Crysis 1, 2 & 3, and FEAR & FEAR 2. Kept everything up and running until I sold the company in early 2020 but unfortunately the company I sold too, went under last year (thanks pandemic) and they axed the servers. FEAR, Unreal Gold, Unreal Tournament 3 and Farcry 3 all had a decent amount of traffic the entire time I hosted them...with an amazing amount of activity with FEAR and the original Unreal. Think it’s awesome that there’s still people who were playing these older shooters 20yrs after their original releases. Go to show how well the classics hold up to the test of time!

The ending with the nightmares was a little underwhelming, UNTILL I played it on harder difficulties, where those nightmares do like 25 damage a hit bot to mention they rush you in real time, that was kinda horrifying. I played through this a few months ago and it still holds up great. For some reason I was getting a choppy framerate so it ran worse than when I first played it. The only feature from new games I would give this would be for ragdolling enemies without killing them so you can blow them across the room and have them get back up to shoot you if they're not in limp mode. The multiplayer was really fun too

@@KIRKCOLLECTS Outlaws is my favourite game of all time, it just clicked for me. Playing on the hardest difficulty is a tactical shooter with bursts of frantic gunplay. Great adventure to go on. Alma Wade and FEAR are both well written character and Story Having a scary game is not enough. You have to keep the player wanting more Overall FEAR gives an extremely immersive atmosphere and game world that makes you invested The high damage, the gore and the intense combat gives a small element This is rarely done, Only times I see this was Half life 2 mods underhell and Cinematic mod NOW, The story. You need to keep the player invested in playing the game And this is where Alma plays her role Alma Wade is such a pretty girl

Just recently decided to play through it and this game is a prime example why I hate consoles. The game "could" be so effing awesome but the slow and sluggish movement as well as the small combat areas sucks so bad. Everything about this game hits the right mark except the limitations imposed on it because it was designed for consoles.
@SkyScourgeGod
@SkyScourgeGod 10 ай бұрын
...you do realize that F.E.A.R. was originally brought to Windows a whole year (or more in the PS3's case) before the console versions right...? I played F.E.A.R. on my PC back in high school so I can say with confidence that this game was always designed as a PC game first and a console game later, but even so the Xbox 360 version played just fine. The slow movement is not due to console limitations being forced onto it, it's due to F.E.A.R. being a game released in 2005. For those who don't feel like subtracting, that's almost 20 years ago as of the time I type this. Even Halo, a game released even earlier than that on a console first no less, has the same feeling movement speed minus having a higher jump. You're probably just used to modern games feeling faster. Even then I wouldn't call that bad, you just have to be more deliberate about how you approach combat situations rather than just going balls to the wall though the thick of it. Basically, it's smart tactical play vs impulsive trigger play.
@vikx512
@vikx512 10 ай бұрын
@@SkyScourgeGod OK it made me chuckle a bit that you brought up "Halo" as an example to justify the movement considering its the premier poster boy of console FPSs which all in all wasn't all that mindblowing when you put it up against all games in the genre available on PC, the de facto home platform for FPS. And that type of movement isn't "deliberate", "smart" or "tactical" its just sluggish and designed for an era when publishers wanted consoles to be the future of gaming. Operation Flashpoint, Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon was "deliberate", "smart" and "tactical", FEAR simply suffers from consolitis.

@@vikx512 Ok my PC-humping friend, if you think Halo or the time in which these games released isn't a good enough example of what I am trying to convey here, let's instead talk about an FPS that is widely considered by many to be THE "premier poster boy" of the PC world: Doom. Now your first thought is probably "but Doom is really fast paced, why would you use that as an example?". The answer is simple: it is as traditional of an FPS as it gets. It's fast, brutal, all weapons are powerful and the player is made to feel nearly unstoppable as a result. F.E.A.R., on the other hand, is the farthest from being a traditional FPS simply because it is not an FPS, it is a HORROR FPS. There are very few if any examples of ANY horror game being designed to make you feel fast and powerful. Horror games by nature are made to make you feel slow and vulnerable. When not using slo-mo, F.E.A.R. can do that most of the time coupled with the games insanely smart AI. Ergo, you have to play smart, tactical and deliberate if you want to survive and progress. Another reason I bring up Doom is to mention its distant cousin Doom 3. If you want an apples-to-apples comparison of yet another FPS type game that was originally designed for the PC that can also feel "sluggish" as you call it, Doom 3 is an easy example to point a finger at. Going back to what I said earlier, F.E.A.R. was released in October of 2005. The Xbox 360 didn't come until a month later. Doom 3 was released a whole year before either F.E.A.R. or the 360 ever existed and, like F.E.A.R., didn't see a console port until much later. In this case, the OG Xbox. Also like F.E.A.R., Doom 3 is a horror FPS tailor made to make you feel unsafe hence why movement is slower. It is essentially a similar package as F.E.A.R. wrapped up in a different skin while also being older. Say it with me once again; smart, tactical and deliberate. I don't expect to change hearts and minds in a day, but I do get sick and damn tired of gatekeeper PC master race wannabe's constantly taking a dump on anything related to consoles whether it is games, hardware or people. I grew up with a PC and I own a decent SFF I custom made for modern Windows 10 gaming, a retro XP machine I built from my old high school rig to play old PC games, a Mini PC I installed Batocera on to play stuff I don't own and a f*** ton of old and modern consoles with a f*** ton of old and modern physical games to go with them. I don't love PC games or console games, I just love games. Period. Face facts and just admit that F.E.A.R. is game of its time and genre, not a result of "consolitis". Have a nice day sir. ;)

@@SkyScourgeGod OK at first it was kind of funny you came in here with your butthurt wall of text over a year after my OP because I dared to dislike your favourite game but now it is getting a bit old. Wow, "gatekeeper PC master race wannabe", really? Spoken like a true console pleb, kinda revealed your colors there buddy. Fact of the matter that gaming only makes leaps in advancement when new console generations release is all the evidence one would need to see that more games than one could shake a stick at suffers from "consolitis", if you had been a pc gamer for as long as you imply you would know that this was not always the case, consoles used to stick to what they did best while PC pushed gaming forward.

It's not that scary. It's more scary than Doom 3, but it's not insanely scary looking back. Fear 2 improved on the game greatly.

Fear was a sub par fps. No idea why anyone would care about it. If you enjoyed it, fine. For me it couldn't have been more meh. All i can remember from it was a construction level, ot may have even been the first level. The game was nothing.
