The great Flagstad, aged 63,in semi-retirement,went into the Kingsway Hall,London in 1956--7 to record Religious Pieces.
This piece is astonishing and seamless in it's delivery.
Many say Flagstad was the greatest Wagnerian dramatic soprano of the 20th century, perhaps of all time.
Her international recognition came late in life---1935 at the Metropolitan Opera House,New York.
She had been 'discovered' in 1935, at Bayreuth aged 40 by a Metropolitan singer who was astounded on first hearing her sing. Flagstad had rushed from Norway to Bayreuth when the lead soprano fell ill.
MESSIAH. George Frederick Handel.
The KINGSWAY HALL was a religious place of worship, and favoured by many recording companies for it's splendid acoustics.
Callas,Victoria de los Angeles,Schwarzkopf and Kathleen Ferrier(her last), to name but a few, made many recordings here, when a large orchestral /vocal ensemble was required to the highest standard.
On some of the Kingsway recordings the rumble from the Piccadilly Line underground can be heard!
This recording is in early stereo. Remarkable voice, in her 63rd.year!!
PHOTOS:----
Kirsten Flagstad.
Kingsway Hall during recording sessions.
George Frederick Handel,composer.
Decca have these Kingsway Hall recordings parcelled in with other Flagstad pieces in a two CD box.
However the Kingsway Hall recordings are available on a single CD from on-line sites (used) ----'Kirsten Flagstad. Great Sacred Songs.'
Enjoy.

Reihe".

My friend Gordon Parry, (one of Decca's chief engineers), worked with Kirsten and Sir Georg Solti on possibly the greatest ever classical work of the 20th century, namely Wagner's ring cycle, along with John Culshaw. It was bad enough to lose Kirsten along with that glorious voice in 1962, but to let Kingsway Hall fall into dis-repair and eventually be demolished was just scandalous and a huge tragedy. The acoustics were amazing (apart from the tube trains!), and many Decca recordings were made there, including Mantovani! It is so frustrating that London STILL does not have a concert venue with fine acoustics!!

Flagstad goes to the heart of the aria. She doesn't yet reflect the stylistic approaches of the revival of Baroque music which was to come a little later, but she is so honest and truthful with that magnificent , only heard once in a lifetime voice that she gives a glorious rendition full of sincerity and faith. That for me is the most important thing here.

The "baroque style" to sing it's BULLSHIT. Singing without squillo, chiaroscuro, a very developed chest voice, without girare, with high notes without body, a very white voice?! That's is the baroque way?! No, no, no!!! Even the baroque composers and voice teacher's notes about singing links the vocal technique to belcanto despites that invention of "baroque style". Classical singing means be loud, powerful, rich from the bottom to the top of the vocal range. Caccini, Porpora, Velluti, and so many great voice experts of baroque time says that... Please, understand. There's just ONE way to sing classic music (sacred, opera, songs, etc): the RIGHT way. And the right way it's the old sing school that Flagstad comes, like so many great singers before and after her. The modern school destroyed the fine art of singing.

First of all, it's Callas and neither Dallas nor Calas. You can't compare apples and oranges. Callas, if you mean Maria, was indeed unique, but the voice itself did not possess the absolute beauty that Flagstad's did. Callas also suffered from faulty technique, which became ever more apparent as she aged. See her last sad performances when she was far younger than Flagstad is here. Here you have a completely healthy voice with flawless technique at the advanced age of 63! But at her height, there was a combination of voice, musicality and drama that made Callas truly great. No sense however, in comparing her to a Germanic / Wagnerian soprano.

Kirsten Flagstad was the possessor of possibly and arguably the grandest and most opulent voice in vocal history. People on this page who say Callas was "better" are stupid and know nothing. The great voice is still there, but I was surprised at the lack of vocal nuance and musical expression. The aria was delivered full voice throughout, without head tone or pianissimo. So, much energy expended where technique would have provided some respite. But it's a treasured Flagstad performance nonetheless.
