Sequence of the songs
Roth's 1950 published sequence follows neither the order of composition of the songs (Im Abendrot: May 6, 1948; Frühling: July 20, 1948; Beim Schlafengehen: August 4, 1948; September: September 20, 1948) nor that of the 1950 premiere (by Kirsten Flagstad conducted by Wilhelm Furtwängler). Although most recordings adhere to Roth, some stay with Flagstad/Furtwängler - Beim Schlafengehen, September, Frühling, Im Abendrot. The latter include Sena Jurinac's 1951 recording with the Stockholm Philharmonic conducted by Fritz Busch; Lisa Della Casa's 1953 recording with the Vienna Philharmonic under Karl Böhm; and Felicity Lott's 1986 recording with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under Neeme Järvi. There is no authority because Strauss did not conceive a cycle, but he did entrust the premiere to Flagstad.

I'm sorry, but I just do not agree with the comments below, "very important document", always fascinating"... These songs, even today, after 70 years of this premiere, never sounded better, specially Beim Schlafengehen! No other singer has had the right amount of natural voice to go along with Strauss' enormous orchestra! Although she was at the right end of her career, under stress, much criticized for her posture during WWII, her voice still shines like no other. Wonderfull performance.

...and why, why must people like you persist in digging up the horrors of the past. ?! And even here, now, at a time when listeners are basking in this inexpressibly beautiful performance of these glorious songs? When I was a child I was taught a little round. It went..." All things will pass away under the sky. Music alone shall live, never to die." Music will always light the way to a better world in which our better selves might live...if we let it...

Modulation mit 'Bass Booster' Apps: Die Klangcharakteristik der Stimmen und Instrumente wird dadurch nicht verändert. Weil jedoch die mMn. *kaum wahrnehmbaren* Obertöne verstärkt werden, gewinnt die Wiedergabe an 'Präsenz' bzw. Brillanz (die Akustik wirkt ebenfalls realer) und *Text* ist viel besser *verständlich.* (An der *Tonquelle - z.B. Gesang, Violine, Orgel etc.* sind unter anderem die Obertöne maßgeblich mit-verantwortlich für die Qualität des Gesamterlebnisses. Je weiter entfernt ein Zuhörer, umso mehr lässt die Signalintensität nach - bei *hohen* Frequenzen *schneller* als tiefere... Für ältere Aufzeichnungen bereits relevant beim Input in alle im Raum postierten Mikrofone. Dem wird mit neuester Aufnahmetechnik natürlich Rechnung getragen. Bei früheren Produktionen wirkt hier mAn. eine Crescendo-Verstärkung der in einer Aufnahme geschwächt, aber *original* enthaltenen höchsten Frequenzen der Aufzeichnung >>2 kHz diesem Hochtondefizit leicht entgegen. - Hören Sie selbst: fast unglaublich; evtl. ziemlich gut an Begleitinstrumenten erkennbar.)

Strauss knew who he wanted in this London concert for the world to hear this music in 1950 a singer he had great admiration for…nevertheless these songs have captivated not only almost everyone and certainly every singer!!

Historic,yes. But I would rather listen to Janowitz or TeKanawa or Norman or almost any other contemporary singer.
