From 18th-century stable to enchanting modern home in Italy

Asked to convert the stables of an 18th-century villa into a home for a couple and their daughter, Paolo Gelso and Nicoletta Binello designed minimal modern inserts to preserve all the original features of the former manger: a stone trough, a doric column, and vaulted ceilings.
To preserve and level out the old floor, the architects added wooden platforms that also serve to craft rooms, like the entryway and bedroom. The kitchen is an all-in-one unit that also serves as the wall of the entry. The bedroom is shaped by a closet wall and a wooden floor that also houses bed slats for a Japanese-inspired floor bed.
Pivot doors were shaped to fit the existing arched ceilings. Floor-to-ceiling opaque glass delimits the bathrooms.

yea but they are used to small spaces...that kitchen does not feel big at all and the way to the bath is too tight... just me
@Jessicaro
@Jessicaro 5 жыл бұрын
@@snake9961 yes just you:) the kitchen is fairly large certainly seeing as it opens up to a dining area. And they do live in an restaurated house so unless they build an adition they had only so much space to work with and it looks fabulous
@snake9961
@snake9961 5 жыл бұрын
@@Jessicaro pose at 4:33 ... the space between the sink and the place where the horses were attached is unusable all for the sake not to touch the old, also the column is completely alienated looks so out of place dividing the path to the kitchen which should be free and accessible fast and easily without strange manoeuvres ... in the end they alienated the whole project and by far it is not an integration at all in fact it is the opposite, it is an intruder and a strange one too... the kitchen is great but it is out of contest! I worked with italian, they are great but have a problem: they get obsessed
@Jessicaro
@Jessicaro 5 жыл бұрын
@@snake9961 Well the house is probably a heritage property that means they can not remove certain things because it is protected by the state. And sure the easy thing was to break everything and make it modern but where is the fun in that? seeing as they kept every part of the old house intact and still made it modern and beautifull is something you can praise them for. Living in a old buildings is not for everyone. and the kitchen is just fine you can stand on the other side of the island while your chopping something for dinner. But seeing as they probably had not choice but keeping the place where the horses were i praise them for the job they did. It looks beautifull and like they said in the beginning of the video they were glad they had a part of that building even if it was a small one. It depend on what you like i gues
@snake9961
@snake9961 5 жыл бұрын
@@Jessicaro 8:32 the demolished it... not so conservative... but i get what you are saying the kitchen is functional but it has no personality... it is just a cooking space. I would have switch spaces between the dining room and the kitchen or just rotated the kitchen at 90 degrees... but yeah... it was meant to be a space for horses after all hahaha cheers

This might sound weird, but today i had a realization about why your videos feel so organic and natural, almost like walking myself around the places you show: it's because of the silences. Lol. So simple, but allowing silences without talk or music really makes me inmerse in the video...Anyways, as always, love your content! 🤙🏼

Interesting. I guess I wonder about not touching the walls to keep it completely original, but at first glance this seems to have impacted how the new residents live. I love the old frescoes but I guess it’s the old conflict between preserving the past and accommodating the present. I’d live there in a minute of course. I might complain that the kitchen appears to be in box. The setting is lovely. This was different....thanks for the tour.
