Ethan Schlussler has crafted a life of fantasy. For two years he pedaled his homemade bike elevator up to his treehouse bedroom. He built a treehouse that can rotate 360 degrees with a hand crank. He dug a 10-room snow-cave for an overnight with 10 friends. His property is rigged with ziplines. He even drives fantastical vehicles: he's converted a lawn mower into a rally car and an abandoned Toyota into a rock crawler.
His building/engineering education has come from jobs in construction, as an auto mechanic, as well as logging, metal fabricating and operating heavy equipment. Today, his full-time job is creating extraordinary vehicles for his KZfaq channel Grind Hard Plumbing Co.
He has milled all the lumber for his treehouses and to rebuild his childhood home on his property in Northern Idaho. For his bicycle elevator, which he believes is a first of its kind, he started with his mom’s old bike and a counterweight made from a water heater. He then manipulated the bicycle’s gear ratio and added an extra pulley make it an easier climb. For the treehouse itself he invented a friction attachment system so he didn't need to insert any bolts into the tree.
His rotating treehouse was almost a fluke. He was designing it to be supported from the top of the roof to flex with strong winds. "It had a pivot so it could rock back and forth as the tree moved and it would just stay vertical because of gravity. I was just looking at the drawings and I said, 'Wait a minute. There's nothing to stop this from spinning.'"
Schlussler has spent the past few years re-building his 600-square-foot-home, adding 100-square-feet and making every detail custom: from the raw branch that serves as a kitchen beam to the net-bed guest bedroom to the tree-stump sink.

33:54 "If you're not gonna have fun and do the things you always wanted to do, why are you living?" Quote that to 95% of human beings in history and they'd look at you like you were crazy. I hope the dude understands that he has the opportunity to do all of this by sheer luck of the draw. The vast majority of peeps in history never got a chance to "have fun and do the things they wanted to do".

@@curiousgeorge555 Absolutely. However, there's a large percentage of people - myself included - who, in theory, had the opportunity but never recognised it and so never acted upon it. The prevailing mindset, or education, does teach us to conform to a certain set of standards and goals (nice house, family etc) and it's often too late to act when you recognise that there are other ways to live. I suppose this guy is little different to the billionaires of the world in many ways (a lot less harmful, of course). In order for him to have the life he does, others must live a less rewarding life. Like many of these videos, it's focused on the individual (or invidualism). It would be more amazing to see a community living this way and, together, enjoying the zip slides of life, and each sharing in the toils of everyday provision.

@@jacoblindquist nobody in this thread is hating anyone. Why reduce the argument, or discussion, with such a blanket statement? I think he lives a fantastic life. However, like the rest of us, he'll be reliant on people in poorly paid employment to supply his food, clothes and other materials. Thus, if everyone tried to live as he is, we wouldn't have the food, clothes and other materials. This isn't a criticism of the man himself, of course, as that criticism could be levelled at all of us (me especially).

@@Be4Peace okay, but that's not how the existing system works, you must surely agree? Nobody has a "calling" in life to work in an Amazon warehouse, a chicken processing factory, a cobalt mine or any number of underpaid job. They're put there by the debt based system we live in, which is extremely difficult to get out of if you're not immediately aware of it at a young age or have parents who can shelter you from its effects. I personally don't see the system you describe working without coercion, debt, wage slavery etc. but I'd be willing to try it! Edit: I should add, that extracting ourselves from food growing, cooking etc (the basics of survival) has given us a very unhealthy relationship with those things and generally has been bad for society.

There are plenty of brilliant people in the world. It's the lack of access and resources that keeps folks from utilizing their brilliance and everyone benefitting. The financial capital caste system keeps us from really flourishing. It's not enough to be smart or creative in your area of special proclivity. You need to also be good at collecting capital, or win the birth lottery with wealthy & supportive family and access to education.

@@LuisMendoza-pp9qi I didn't say it was impossible. It doesn't need to be hard. Making it difficult to access means or education doesn't make the struggle to create or invent something better, it just throws up roadblocks. A garage is such a luxury for so many people. We could make access to the means of actualizing an individual's brilliance just a little easier. We have more than enough resources to do so, and everyone would benefit from that.

@@janinawaz4596 well that's so true...but a true genius finds a way to go through the roadbkocks even it it takes time.... fortunately there are libraries that offer 3D printing services as well as "shared workshops" that although are expensive (around $100 a month) you gave full access to all the tools... even if you get two months you can advance a prototype a lot
@janinawaz4596
@janinawaz4596 Жыл бұрын
@@LuisMendoza-pp9qi Quality hackspaces like Noisebridge used to be $5 to $10/month before 2010, with access to a crazy amount of specialized tools. They were anarchical, with folks donating and lending lots of equipment. Sky high rents forced the closure of many of them. They became unsustainable due to real estate speculation and for profit land use. As for "true geniuses" (whatever that means) I'd rather they spend their creativity in being productive rather than wasting time on roadblocks. Extreme wealth gaps and lack of access to education don't advance society. They tend to slow or stagnate it.
