To maximize an 18 square-meter apartment (194 square feet) for a family of 3, Ángel Rico designed transforming furniture to accommodate dinner parties for 10, game nights for 7 and sleeping for 5. In the Catalan beach town of Coma-Ruga (70 km south of Barcelona), every square meter counts so Rico created all-in-one walls of furniture that pivot and unfold to change the use of the one-room depending on need: from living room to dining room to bedroom to game room, etc.
Even the bathroom is maximized: the “guest bedroom” (a lofted bed accessed by ladder) is now tucked above it and clothing closets are built into the door so the loo converts into a changing room when the door is closed.
Architect: Ángel Rico www.arqmais.net/
Carpenter: Pérez Mora

I like it that this design sets boundaries not just in space but in time, i.e. when is mealtime, it's mealtime! No watching TV while dining, no calling the kid from his room to come to dinner because his room becomes the dining room... everybody moves together from one phase of daily life to the other. Neat.

@@michelleobrien6996 Yeah... I think they should have lubricated the hinges better or use less noisy hinges. Also, many of the panels/doors don't seem to have any dampening material or even rubber feet to soften the impact sound. I think the idea is great but there are places they can add some small tweaks to provide a bit more finesse.

Have you been to Barcelona or tried to rent there? The market is ridiculous and denigrating or human decency. There is people living in groups of 20 or 30 in small family apartments, 2 or 3 couples sharing a 3 bedroom and illegal occupation. Yeah the architect created nice solutions but this city has a real problem and I feel sorry for the people that have to live there.

Very clever design and use of space. Perfect for the family as a holiday home (or as an Air B&B), but don't think it would work for fulltime living as it is so compact and needs so much moving of fittings for everyday living. Might work for a single person for full time living but defiantly not a 3 person family full time. Would have like to have seen how he got up into that bed over the bathroom. Can't imagine two friends climbing up there after a few drinks. Think they'd end up in A&E to be honest, especially if they needed a wee during the night. 🙂

Very great use of space, I can see how he spent a lot of time to come up with this. Trying to find the best possible ways to utilize a tiny space especially with those requests would be stressful. Also happy he gave props to the carpenter because in building transitional things like this 1 to 2 mm off can make a whole mess of things. The only thing that would bother me the most is the coffee table cart with those wheels thumping on the tiled flooring all the time. But that's just a pet peeve for me personally. Not sure how the insulation is in the walls and if it would bother the neighbors too much or not.

ArrohFFXI For the coffee table cart wheels you could get ones with more rubber or rollerblade like, reducing a lot of noise.

Where did the ladder appear from to get to the loft bed? Though there were some good ideas, it seems like the focus was on Gin & Tonics. I confess, I'm a vodka person. Also, I've seen that dining table somewhere before... and it has many leaves that transform it into a long table, but... where were they? Nice intro drone shot!

Really inventive use of space. Functionally it works but it would be a pain to live with. Why planners are allowed to build so small is the issue surely. Thought provoking video. Love your content.
@mynamehaschanged
@mynamehaschanged 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's a problem of "planners allowed to build so small". It is a vacational space, made for a couple with a kid at most. Not for one to put a table for 6 inside. Most people when in vacation eat outdoors anyway. You could see it as a Hotel room that someone wanted to convert into an appartment (generating a pronblem). I could guarantee there are bigger spaces for sale in those buildings, like 2 bedroom or 3 bedroom spaces (for more money of course).

Danny C I appreciate your point but would rather all spaces are comfortable while being suitable for the amount of occupants. The customer did want a lot from this space and has to live with the consequences. 👍🏻
@mynamehaschanged
@mynamehaschanged 4 жыл бұрын
@@paulmadden1458 Yeah that's kind of why I was trying to express. Some times people want more than what they can afford. If you can pay for a vacational space for 2, either use it comfortably for 2 or pay the consequences as you say.

First, the place is amazing. My concern is the moving parts after years of use. Would soft rubber wheels be better for the small cart and moving walls? I feel like the noise of them being moved would go down dramatically.

I would change the design in these ways: 1. Extend the loft area over the entry way, giving more room up there. 2. Perhaps lower the front section of the loft about 10cm or more (over the bathroom door) for more head room when crouching/crawling up there (a child of 6 or 7 may be better able to actually sit and read a book). I know the shower head wouldn't then fit, so I would move the shower area to the back of the bathroom (above the shower in the loft can be more of a shelf area there). 3. The "coffee cart" is completely NOT ergonomic! It should be raised to a comfortable level. Where it is stored under the other shelves - I would remove the bottom 2 shelves there (that swing in front of the kitchen sink currently). With the raised coffee cart, you can claim back some storage space in the coffee cart. Also, elimination of the 2 shelves will prevent covering up of the kitchen sink - which there is no need to do! 4. The wall panel @1:15 could swing open the opposite way (towards the main couch/bed). This would give enough room for a queen size fold-down bed from the wall. I mean, doesn't it make more sense to have a visiting adult couple sleep in a regular bed, and have a child or children crawl up into the more constricted loft area? 5. Optional: You could even have a drop-down bed from the high ceiling that could form a type of bunk bed situation.

There are some good ideas in this but, I think it was a mistake to put all of the foldable access for everything on the same side, and the kitchen should always be accessible. You shouldn't have to fold open a wall or two to get to a sink or fridge when entertaining, or otherwise. And, let's be honest, If your guests are too drunk to drive the last thing they need to be doing is climbing a ladder to get back-n-forth from a bed to the bathroom. Also, never store clothes in a bathroom, unless you want your clothes to be damp and always smell like a bathroom. I do like the room separating folding wall and murphy bed, though.

2:04 outside the door there is a single leaf for the table, extra chairs and the ladder for the loft. 3:00 shows the table assembled with the single leaf. Seems like there isn't actually any room in the apartment to store the extra equipment needed for entertaining. I think the object at 13:41 might be a couple of folding tray tables on a stand, probably what the family mostly uses when it's just the three of them.
