What you guys have to realize about this video is that when the first group shot, in the video, is shown of KISS - this was the FIRST time anyone had seen them without make-up. This was the world-premiere of KISS unmasking themselves for the first time. KISS started in 1973 and they never allowed themselves to be photographed in public without their make-up. It was a mystery of sorts.

Yeah, I went to this concert in 1984. I was only 13. It was right after they took their makeup off. My Mom had known about KISS in the 70's with their makeup but didn't know about this song, so I was able to go. Great show with Riot and Vandenberg opening up for them. RIP TO drummer Eric Carr!! He had an amazing solo that night!!🥁🤘

'84 is 8 years before I would truly discover them, my mother was a bit of a paradox in the 80's she worked at 2 record stores but still believed Metal was the devils music so of course she believed KISS was Kids In Satans Service, and that guy that blew his face off with a shot gun and blamed Judas Priest because of back masking. To this day even though she's pretty much excepted most forms of music as valid in their own way, but to this day she believes there was a Motley Crew Concert where they told the people if they wanted entrance to the venue they had to rip apart a bunch of kittens and puppies. At this point I'm still trying to find even the smallest fragment of this, I figure whether it's real or 80's satanic panic anti-metal propaganda some scrap of it has to exist somewhere but I've found NOTHING

@@endless013 They always went after Metal artists the hardest (the look, the sound, the hair, so on). I get it, there were Ozzy's antics a couple of times, and the excess of girls and drugs but most Heavy Metal artists weren't into anything Satanic, although some did it for shock value. Most of them in the 80's were just really talented musicians who were finally getting some recognition. Those against them focused on all of the aforementioned things (the low hanging fruit, if you will) but minimized or even ignored their musical talent. That was what they always overlooked with Metal, in favor of other artists who did other kinds of music and looked more "acceptable" doing it.

"Lick it up"... "life's such a treat" "You gotta live like you're on Vacation"... Lick up the "Joi du Vive" (Joy of Life). The Symbolism behind the Video was, no matter how Bad and "Dog eat Dog" gets, don't forget to enjoy yourself. This Video came out around the Same Time as the KISS Makeup came off, so the Band had to look as Mean and Metal as other Groups like Slayer and such.

Mostly spot on. As you said, by "lick it up", they're talking about "life". i.e. enjoy life. Sure there's innuendo, but they're not saying it explicitly. Also, this video was the FIRST video they ever did without makeup. That's one of the reasons you see them walking around for a while before showing their faces.... it's kind of for dramatic effect (a big reveal).

A lot of their earlier music was laden with sexual innuendo. I've never actually done the research when it comes to this song, but I think most know what they're referring to. Notable also, this was the first album without makeup, which somewhat explains the beginning of this video. People had waited since the mid 70's to see them unmasked.

@@Chris.Davis.2 My understanding was that they all put on their own makeup prior to shows, so I imagine it became a little tedious always doing that. What's funny is, that sometime back in the mid 90's when they got Ace and Peter back in the band, they started putting the makeup back on, which worked for them and us, we liked them better with their makeup on and that makeup helped to cover up their aging faces.

As pointed out, this was the first time fans saw KISS without makeup. MTV had a special program to debut this video in 1983. For the first part of the show the band was interviewed with their backs towards the camera. Then they played the video. This was when KISS shifted towards heavy metal from glam rock.

I grew up in the 80’s and this era with KISS without the make up was the version I feel most nostalgic towards. Granted, a lot of their seventies stuff are classic albums, but the era from 1981’s The Elder to let’s say 1985’s Asylum is very overlooked and underrated. I will always hold this version of KISS in the highest regard.

In the '70s Kiss wore makeup and all the clothing AKA armor/boots like clothing it was to get attention during that time period which they did a great job of to stand out and be unique..themselves and their AWESOME talent. During the '80s they wanted to show who they really were to reveal who they were and this video was the world premiere of Kiss without makeup. Lick it up it's definitely a reference to how Gene Simmons would use his tongue on stage when they wore makeup during the seventies that made him famous for doing so. Like saying eat it up ...Lick It Up and Enjoy.. Lick It Up because you're a fan of all Kiss has done from this point and this is Kiss today referring to the video timeframe.... So LICK IT UP and enjoy.. 🤘it's not a crime to be good to yourself🤘😛😛

Deep Purple also recorded a song called 'Lick it up' in 1993... that was about 'guitar licks' 😝🤘🤘 Kiss' "Lick it up" had sexual connotations, but Paul Stanley (guitar & vocals) said it was about having a taste of the good life; u 'lick a plate' when u want to finish up every bit of that dish that u are served... it's not explicit really. This video was the first one Kiss shot in 1983 without their 70's kabuki makeup and costumes... by this point, Kiss had only 2 original members - Paul Stanley & Gene Simmons (bass & vocals)... Eric Carr (drums) had joined in 1980, and Vinnie Vincent (lead guitar) had signed up in 1982, but their last US tour w/ makeup was a disaster, and Kiss records were no longer selling in America. However, in South America, the fans there knew all the new songs and came in droves, so they knew the music was good, but the image was not selling anymore. So, after recording the album 'Lick it up' in 1983, Paul Stanley knew that Kiss had to re-introduce themselves to fans of the 80's... that meant taking off the makeup, which they did live on MTV to promote the album. And it worked... 'Lick it up' charted and sold platinum in the US, the first time a Kiss record had sold that many copies since 1979. The music video was shot in a run-down area of New York City, so no props were needed (except the skulls) to portray an apocalyptic future, surrounded by female video models. If Kiss looked weird on camera, it was because they weren't sure how they would come across without their makeup. Many haters put down Kiss' non-makeup years (1983 to 1995) but they were very successful in that era. Vinnie Vincent was fired in 1984 after this tour (he refused to sign a contract w/ Kiss) and Eric Carr (drums) passed away in 1991 from cancer.

@@richardburdon3241 Paul and Gene ran a very leaky galley when Ace and Peter were in Kiss... Gene doesn't drink and Paul recalled avoiding heavy drinking after the 2nd Kiss album 'Hotter than Hell' after an unfortunate incident being locked in a car 😂 But Ace and Peter were always tripping, even in the early days of Kiss. Peter was a heavy coke user... and Ace was always drinking (and using drugs) ... Ace was in poor shape by 1977 when he was unable to play guitar in the studio. Peter was so wrecked by 1979 that he was unable to play drums anymore... he was let go by 1980... Ace quit in 1982. The 2nd time around, Peter found out in 2001 that Ace was making more bank $$$ than him and demanded more money... Paul and Gene refused and Peter was replaced by Eric Singer. Ace was back using drugs and alcohol by 2001 and was in such poor shape that a final tour leg was canceled and he walked in 2002... Tommy Thayer replaced him. Both times, Ace and Peter were not fired for their substance abuse... More because of their performances and business demands.

Back in the late 70's Kiss was my favorite band. I was 8 or 9 years old and just started to learn guitar. My mom bought a bunch of records in a box from a garage sale, and I learned how to play by ear from those. I loved it! I was hooked into rock and roll with those records (In that box were records from Black Sabbath, ACDC, Led Zeppelin and Kiss, among others.) But the Kiss riffs were the ones I gravitated toward because they were catchy and easy and they were my favorite band with the whole makeup thing and stuff. But around the time they lost Ace and Peter and cut their hair and eventually lost the makeup, I couldn't get into them. They became a joke. This song, and the video especially, was a bad nightmare to me. It was cringe even back then when "hair metal" was popular. I never really looked back. They were done for me at that point.

I'm a Kiss fan from '76. I was 10 then. When they unmasked on MTV in '83, Kiss lost all mystic, comic book and or super hero inclinations. They simply became what all the other bands were then image wise. Without Ace and Peter, their music suffered greatly. They became cheesy.

@Bookhouse Boy Yep. Dynasty, followed by Unmasked, and the The Elder (which I thought was actually decent, but a lot of people hate). I think Lick It Up and Animalize are both pretty solid albums. After that, I didn't listen too much. But I did like Smashes, Thrashes and Hits, which had 2 new original songs. And Forever was pretty good too. And yeah, some of it was cheesy.

The song title is a euphemism for enjoy life. The lyrics say it all. Life's such a treat and it's you taste it, there ain't no reason on earth to waste it. It ain't a crime to be good to yourself. No sexual overtones or innuendo here. Just an uplifting positive song.

It's supposed to post apocalyptic. 1983 was huge for that due to many sci-fi flicks. This was the first time the world had seen them without their make-up. They were still not comfortable being themselves and it showed lol. My favorite band in the world. Loved your vid. From this timeframe, check out All Hell's Breaking Loose.

This video, no matter how many reasons or excuses we provide for Kiss, has not aged well. For gods sakes, what is Gene doing with his facial expressions? The early part of the video with hot babes in a dystopian world, doing laundry no less, until the boys show up to declare lick it up, is just hella goof awkward. The video would have been better as a concert video with the crowd yelling along w/ the lyrics. Brad is spot on funny: "Its about licken. Licken. Licken stuff up. Licken activities." Lex, can you be more innocent? Brad: Remember the Lez Zeppelin song about lemonade? "oh. ohhhh." Thanks guys for a good laugh.

Started listening to rock music (instead of radio rock) after ALIVE! came out so DESTROYER was my first album. I was a big fan for a couple of years then started playing drums & gravitated away after ALIVE II. Never really came back but still enjoy listening to their early stuff now & then. I had no use for this era as I was now into Iron Maiden, Judas Priest & NWOBHM. When I found Vinnie Vincent was from my hometown of Bridgeport CT, I was intrigued. Come to find out my cousin's husband & my best friend's sister both went to Central High w/ him. The guy is definitely talented. And being from CT, many people have KISS stories, even my wife has a Criscoula (Peter Criss) story.

I never got into Kiss, even after becoming a metalhead in '83. It wasn't really the makeup, they just never had that harder rockin', early-metal sound like Sabbath or Judas Priest; they seemed like...pop rock to me, despite the costumes. However, at least 2 songs from this '83 album were awesome sounding with a more contemporary guitar sound (finally) which I appreciated, this one and "All Hell's Breakin' Loose". Simple, with a better almost-metal sound, and lyrics right in line with the spirit of the new decade, no-holds-barred good times: "Don't need to wait for an invitation, you gotta live like you're on vacation"..."It ain't a crime to be good to yourself" -- that was the spirit of the early/mid-80s, you have to understand.

Lick It Up is a proverbial and literal double entendre. Take the opportunities in life presented to you is underlying general message and, yes, a specific example is provided fairly clearly of one of those opportunities: sleeping with a rock star. “It’s only right now” is referring to “I’m only in town tonight” which all makes sense based on opening line: “Don’t wanna wait ‘til ya know me better…Let’s just be glad for the time together”. Not my favorite KISS song. Exciter and Not for the Innocent are my top 2 from Paul and Gene off Lick it Up. If you want to go pop music, yes - Forever is solid and if you want to stick to softer side I Still Love You from Kiss Unplugged will impress. Love you guys!
