When it comes to Cheap Power (horsepower & torque) sometimes you have to think a little out of the box. It's not really what you can do..... because it all comes down to what you can afford to do with the time you have to do it. So sometimes it pays to look at what things start with. I would love to dive into this little Slant 6 and make it into something wild and crazy.... but I know that I can't do that with what I have, and definitely can't do it in the time I have to get it done. So, I'll look at other things that start me within the ballpark of the power ratings I'm looking for.
Even if that means putting something strange in this little 65 Dodge Dart to get to this year's #nonamenationals .

I've owned several slants over the years. Great, dependable little power plant and a definite upgrade from the old flat head 6 bangers.

I hear ya Matt, and it actually pains me to talk about this 6 like that. Really.... they did exactly what they where designed to do, and they were ULTRA dependable (probably Mopars best for that). That old Massey hay swather I showed in that video with a 225 slant six in it..... it still to this day runs like a Swiss Watch, and it's so old that it still has the Wood Slat & Beam Header on it. Yeah..... if dependability is the Goal..... there is nothing better to put in a Mopar than a slant 6.

My brother had a 65 dart GT with the 273 super commando, it had a carter 4 bbl carburetor and solid lifters, it ran pretty decent. A small block mopar is a easy swap in that car with the conversion slant 6 to small block V8 motor mounts or you can switch the K member to a V8 one. I'd definitely put a small block mopar back in it, you couldn't go wrong with a good 318 or 360!👍

I built a 225 slant six in 1992 and the steel shim head gaskets were no longer available so even after milling .090" off the head I had to use a .040" thick head gasket. Then you should use custom length push rods too! I had the Erson RV 15 cam, ported head, factory 2bbl, windage tray kit and a welded exhaust manifold that went to 2 1/2 " flange and eliminated the heat riser. The 2.71 gears kept it in the low 16s. Except for the head milling I used a welder and a grinder to get more "free" power and it was fun! If I were to do it again I would use the '75 and newer head with no spark plug tubes.

Yeah...? that's the 225 I have out back, and if I remember right it is a '75... lol. This one that's in here though..... the kid that had it tore it all apart, pulled the head and set the head next to the car uncovered for years. Those cylinders are beyond gone, and the head is packed with mud and rust. I just set it back on there with the 4 head bolts that weren't full of muck to keep it all in one place to pull it out of there. I can save a lot of them.... but this one isn't one of them... lol.

Wish i had found this channel before i rebuilt my 64 plymouth valiant. Put a rebuilt 225 bored over with a mildly aggressive cam and new transmission new clifford conversion headers and a 350 cfm 2bbl holley new electrical harness and electronic ignition.... and here i figure out i couldve gotten more power for cheaper with a different engine. Live and learn i guess

Getting the system setup to work can free up power...new plugs of the proper heat range and getting the points dialed in with a dwell meter can help take care of a lot of misfires....adjusting the timing and carb can get the combustion dialed in to where your getting the biggest bang in the cylinder will help....a good tune can really go a long way with whatcha got! good work man!

I hear ya Midnight! It actually pains me to "dim the light" on the Slant 6. It's actually one of the best engines Mopar made, they run forever. But to pair it to a 1965 Automatic...... yeah this thing was great at getting you there, as long as that's all you wanted to do..... lol.

Slant 6’s are great reliable little engines. Great for just everyday driving. These Darts are fun with a few more horses under the hood though, so I see where you are coming from! 😉 Especially us guys on a budget. I was fortunate to be able and put a 340/4-speed in my GT. Now it flies like a Dart…🎯😉

Dad stopped by the other day, and we came up with a better idea of that little slant 6. Like you said, they are ULTRA dependable. If all you want is a car that will start and go for years, there is nothing better in Mopar than the Slant 6. I actually hate talking down about it because of that....... but when it comes to HP Fun on a Budget...... well that is not where its at.... lol.

I generally like to keep Chevy engines in a Chevy, Mopar in a Mopar etcetera, but I like the 302 Furd idea. I believe it's a bit narrower, front sump and front distributor which should all help make fitment easier. Parts availability would also be excellent. Of course, this is coming from a guy putting a BB Mopar in a Chevy S10 so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
@BareRoseGarage
@BareRoseGarage Жыл бұрын
Oh yeah.... that little 302 Ford is about 4 inches narrower than a SBC. If you are working in a tight spot, it's the King of Kings...............until you get to the oil pan that is.... lolololol. Luckily, they have multiple sump designs and pickup tube options if you are willing to accept the downfalls of those options. And the engine swap bit..... yeah I got a chuckle out of that one.... esp since that Grain of Salt means a lot when your only about 3hrs from Bonniville..... lololol.

Hello! Wish you could find a 273 Hi Po, but that would be a monumental task. Perhaps a stout 318.? or better yet, a 340. Still surprised at GT has a 225 slant six in it. Did not know they did that.

When I showed up to look at it, I was TOTALLY expecting to see that as well, and it sounded like air coming out of a balloon when I popped the hood. Then I said to myself, "Well it is a GT, it has to have the 4sp then"...... nope automatic on the floor...... ug. I guess all the GT means was that it had the "Charger" sticker on the air cleaner (last year of that before they made the Charger its own car in 66), Hardtop body.... and fancy trim. maybe the "performance" of it came from the weight (or lack of).... not sure.

Everybody looks for horsepower and torque, but you never hear anybody talk about the curve...A 383 mopar has about the same horsepower and torque as a chevy 383 stroker...however the 383 mopar starts its torque and horsepower at a low RPM and carry's it throughout, whilst the chevrolet doesn't achieve this until 6000 RPM...they showed this on engine masters on the Dyno...basically to say, the mopar will perform better in the quarter mile. Once put a 318 in a mustang bone stock, couldn't keep the tires from breaking loose...the ford 302 had more horsepower, but the 318 is a torque monster in comparison when it coms out the gate.

@@NathansMoparGarage it was surely something...the drivers side exhaust manifold was like 1/2" from the steering arm, it was tight, but it got in there...interestingly, the drivers side mount lined right up, but the passenger side had to be spaced a little, but was remarkably close.

Spot On Hayneshvac! and exactly why I say the 383 Mopar is my favorite of the bunch (even over the hemi). It's also the reason I like the FE series Fords (with all their faults) there wasn't Mountain Peaks on the graph... it was rolling hills that kept you in both power bands over the RPM range. Good stuff man and thanks for that comment!

Yep.... they weren't big on the ponies, but more in the torque back then. And like all the brands... those early TBI's in the dreaded 80's were even worse. Fortunately, though, they are a solid foundation you can build off of though.

Whatever you do..... do NOT use a big block. That is NOT conducive to either weight savings, nor a cost effective budget. Any small block can make the hp of a big block and proper gearing can make up for the lost torque. Even if you traveled down the road of the /6, never with an automatic.... gotta be manual or its again, not conducive to weight savings nor cost effective over performance. Gonna be interesting to see where this one goes!
@BareRoseGarage

Boy I hear ya Oly.... and especially after what comes in the next video. Only thing I would gain with a BB is Torque, and this thing is so light it doesn't really need that edge...... even though I'm staring at 2 BBF's that are saying "Toss me in there and I'll show them!"...... as I shake my head. As for the automatic..... OH YEAH! and this isn't the automatics everyone is used to..... these are the "Slush-Box" years of N-Drops or no go spinning. Not to mention its a Slush-Box attached to a leaning tower of very little power... ug.

This is going to pain me to say this, because I'm not into inbreeding. But, another factor to mention is weight. Your basic Ford 302 weighs under 500 lbs. The slant six is 475 lbs. Since you'll have to make your own mounts for even the 318, it doesn't take any more work or money to make mounts for that Ford or Chevy (🤮) motor either. In fact, I bet that 302 would fit better than the 318 would, because of the exhaust, and the fact that the 260-302 Ford's were smaller than the 273-340 Mopars. Now, if you need a 273, I have one....

But with every advantage, there's the disadvantage that follows it..... hmmmMMmm. I have to figure out how to get this thing to steer from the front..... do-able but I still fight the weght forward issue......... ..... yeah..... this is going to be fun for sure! lolololol
