What is your opinion on the pot filler? Team for or team against!?

We are planning our kitchen renovation now. I am dead set on 2 bowl shallow sink. I have done dishes in those deep 1 bowl sinks and they are back breakers! I can’t believe others don’t say that. Also, we might have things in one side of the sink and then it’s time to drain the pasta or potatoes. That’s another reason I like double bowl. So yeah, that’s my 2 cents on that.

I have also heard from plumbers that pot fillers are a nightmare, so I’m gonna skip that, because I am 60 and it’s safer for me to drag the pot over to the sink and empty it. Also one thing you didn’t mention is you need a sink big enough to put a turkey in! And you can always buy a plastic tub if you want to separate. Our renovation is in a 1780s circa home, talk about difficult!

You are right NOT TO GET the pot filler, those things will always eventually leak (according to my plumber friend). Just walk around and get your water. Saved you 2K!!!

We spent over 9 months designing ours. Get it right on paper no matter how long it takes and spend the money on the design and blueprints. So worth it! Overthink things before you order them.

"Do it right the first time" are words to live by when remodeling. I had a conflict with my contractor who wouldn't run the cabinets to the ceiling (part of the original plan) and I have always regretted giving in to him. I could go on, but contractors seem to come in only two kinds: horrible or heaven sent!

I agree with everything except the sink. I love and need a double sink. It's not a fashion statement, but it's super practical.

Currently in a reno & I was hell bendy on not having the refrigerator built in because I thought…”no one uses those cabinets”….now I’m going to build it in because it looks sooo much better 🙃

Flooring. At my flooring store I tell people to take the sample home and drop some flour and dirt on it, and see if your ok with what sticks in the voids.

I think one of the most important design specifications for your kitchen is good lighting. A well lit kitchen is essential. Good under cabinet lighting, lighting that illuminates your work area/task lighting, island/peninsula lighting etc, are key. Consider how a light might cast a shadow where you will be working, will a ceiling fan cause a strobe effect.

I did a kitchen reno 2 years ago and you are correct about everything . I also opted to not have pot filler because it was pretty pricey . For countertops I did dekton (manufactured stone) and it is great! It doesn't stain, very resistant and very easy to clean. For storage I did open shelving and flat modern cupboards. I initially wanted shaker style but was talked into it by my designer and I am happy with them because they are so easy to keep clean. It took me 4 months with the arquitect to decide on the kitchen design because for me this was the most important room in the house and I love it.

I enjoyed hearing your viewpoints. Good lighting is, in my opinion, one of the most crucial design requirements for any kitchen. A bright kitchen is necessary.

I cannot emphasize enough how important the big single sink is! You can wash a big pan with a handle flat in the bottom. Once you’ve had the big farm sink, you’ll never go back to a ridiculous divided sink.

We opted to take our kitchen backsplash up and around the window. It creates visual appeal and a sense of flow. I agree with you on this option.

No dishwasher in my kitchen. I have a dual sink, but is a bit small for things like half sheet pans and my cast iron skillet. It's doable. For my 1950's small kitchen I opted for more storage and I have 3 children and a husband that help with dishes so it works for us. More storage for all my cake decorating supplies was a must.

Love these tips!! I did most of these except the pot filler!! But my sink/ stove are literally separated by one corner cabinet! So there really wasn’t that need! I did run the quartz up the backsplash, but only since my parents convinced me since . It’s coming back in style from the late 90s!! They still have it in their kitchen.

I appreciate hearing your opinions. It is always helpful to get ideas and to avoid pitfalls. I agree on most of the ideas you shared. My only comment is in regards to the sink. I chose to get the double sink because of water conservation. I thought that it would use less water to soak dishes in a sink that would get deeper, faster. I have a small side and a large side to the sink so the dishes do fit fine in the larger side. My other side of the sink is not as deep and has the garbage disposal. I sometimes put dishes to dry in that side.

Well let’s discuss about the sink… It’s functionality is not solely for washing dishes but to cook. I still want my sink to be double sink but the new double sinks now have the dividers a little lower so you could wash you baking sheets easier. I still want a double sink cause if I’m washing chicken on one side at least the other 1/2 could be used for other things. Double sinks would avoid me getting sick from mixing meat and whatever I’m doing on the other side. Also sinks should have round corners for easy clean up. I know that the trend is to have one really big sink with rectangular corners, but the owner of a kitchen cabinet store suggested to me once that avoid those trendy sinks as it would be cleaning up nightmares! Kitchen is really a personal space, you do what works for you and make sure it is functional. Sometimes trendy stuffs work but not just the one big sink. I still love a double sink! Dishwashing? Well you have a dish washer to do the work! Sinks supposed to help you wash your veggies and meat And etc…my two cents cause I cook! I know what is functional and what is not in sinks!

We have slowly been completing our kitchen renovation and I agree with you on all of these points. We opted for a single basin sink as our old double basin actually caused a permanent warp in my cookie sheets because I couldn’t lay them flat when scrubbing. We are also opting to take the backsplash all of the way up because it’s easier to clean the splatter. My dad suggested we just header off the top of the cabinets but that little extra space is perfect for my seasonal platters and whatnot.

The only one I really disagree with is the sink. We have one big sink right now, and we absolutely HATE it. We really really wish we had a double sink and that one one of the things high on our priorities for our new kitchen. Absolutely need a double sink. But hey, that's just us. *shrugs*

This is what we did. Kitchen cabinets were taken to a car body shop and painted with white car paint. We used invisacook induction stove. The cooktop is under a granite countertop. We went higher end with SubZero. These refrigerators run for 25 to 30 years. two compressors, and air scrubbers. This has cabinet panels. The big mistake is the pull-out trash bins. The tracks in every single one we bought has failed.

I asked people on a popular web site about pot fillers and the open shelves. Most said no, dont do it. Pot filler will eventually leak some said, etc. The open shelves by a range will get grease on the bottom from food splashing up. My sink is not too far from the stove, so not sure I will do the pot filler.

Love these tips! I did all of them except the pot filler, I didn’t mind it because My stove is close to the sink, however as I get older and it gets harder to lift heavy pots, I do think it would be nice. 👏🏻👏🏻

I like all your decisions.. except about the pot filler. You need to carry the hot water to the sink to empty it, so you are not avoiding a task. I have 42” cabinets and they don’t go to the ceiling because I have 13 ft ceilings. It is a lot of dead space, but I have a huge pantry.

Always had double sink. With one big sink i would put some kind of tub inside to keep from overfilling wash water while rinsing.

Love these tips. Redoing my kitchen right now. No pot filler though, the sink is so close and I dont like the look with smaller ranges. Great if your cooktop is 36 inch or more. I spend my days inspecting restaurants so I was sure torn but I'm so old...... fashioned. I love to display beautiful vases with dust collecting silk hydrangeas at the kitchen corners on the upper cabinets and other weird eye catching trinkets. Perhaps and ode to my grandmother. Ps Love the out takes! Perhaps a pot filler in another year when I add the mini snack bar and water line to my new larger living room. Shared wall so it will work.

I'm always doing renovations on a budget but taking your splash back up to the cabinets and also taking your cabinets up to the ceiling height are both worth the extra cost.

You are so right about the sink! I'm not sure who likes washing a crock pot or a dutch oven/pot in a divided sink but it is not easy. We are just beginning our kitchen renovation and a large stainless steel farmstyle (SINGLE BOWL) sink is what we're getting. :) I agree with cabinets or molding going up to the ceiling too. It just looks more professional - AND not dust will gather! Knowing exactly what you want and researching what looks best in your kitchen is key - don't get something that is so taste specific it will look dated in 2 years. Love your backsplash btw. :)

Hi Christina! Great advices. I am from Spain where the average kitchen fits on the kitchen islands that you showed on your picture :D But most of the advices apply pretty good. In our case cabinets all the way to the ceiling is almost a must to maximise space. The fridge, in our cage, we usually "blend in" to make the kitchen look high end, so it is camouflaged with the cabinets. Our fridges are usually smaller as we tend to eat more outside and to buy fresh ingredients on the market almost daily. I had never seen the pot filler in my life! Well, it's an interesting idea but, unless you already have water connection on that wall as well, I would skip it due to the huge cost that can be just to take the proper water installation on that wall, having already a sink a few meters a way (in our case it can be 1 or 2 meters away) :)

I totally agree with you on a lot of these statements for the kitchen. Back in 2008 I was building a home. The builder was so incredibly difficult about my husband and I making changes to the kitchen. I wanted an eight burner cooktop and I was told I couldn’t get it because of venting issues, which were totally false. Then I wanted my cabinets to go all the way to the ceiling with glass doors with lights in them to showcase my finer pieces. He said that that would be way expensive and against code. The whole situation was a nightmare. I also wanted an oversized island however that would never come to fruition due to the fact that I was told that the weight of the new slab would damage the floor. Which was hardwood. After all the trouble the grief we ended up moving 2 years later. doors

The most important thing we did in our renovation was ask where we would be walking. We have a separate dining room, and there are cupboards with dishes right next to the dining room door. When dinner is over, dirty dishes are collected and rinsed in a small sink right next to the dishwasher. The dishwasher is also close to the dining room. Things that need hand-washing are washed in a double sink close to the stove and close to the cupboards around the stove, where they are stored. Cleanup is efficient, and we are not bumping into one another.

Not open shelves!! Akkk!! Great for a restaurant but a mess, critter and dust collector for homes. I personally love a double sink. One side is dishes being staged for washing or rinsing before putting them in the dishwasher. I do this to spend time with my guests not to press them into helping me do dishes and the other side is still functional for another use like dumping out the rest of the old coffee and starting a new pot. You don't have coffee all over the dishes already in the sink. I agree about the fridge.

I have a very large Kohler Riverby double sink and it is the best sink! For food prep, it keeps the food and dirty dishes separate. Plenty of room for big items

Good tips! I am in the midst of a kitchen renovation and I think we covered most of these except the pot filler and the counter depth fridge (ours is in the corner-it’s just worked better for us). We are doing all the plumbing but we’re in your camp of us not needing it…why? However, in the spirit of pot filler……we are refacing our existing kitchen cupboards but adding more new - I wanted all new. The budget has been so steep it feels like there is little for aesthetic

I agree with just about everything you said. I am just about finished with our all first floor re-flooring (to tile) and kitchen and bathroom reno. Been a long staggering 2 months. And I am so glad I tried to fight with the up to ceiling cabinets, I didn’t win because it would have added weeks to our timeline due to customization but I won in the all wall, up to the ceiling backsplash. I also won in getting the quartz counter I wanted vs granite and I won in choosing the large modern kitchen sink with apron. The only thing I was against, which my husband suggested and I’m still glad we’re not paying extra is the filler faucet. Like you, we don’t eat pasta everyday. But the thought of the faucet fixture getting greasy from my husband the chef, frying steak or fish, overtime would drive me nuts. All great advice!

Interesting. Our Norwegian house was built in 1963, and we have lived in it since 1989 (34 years). We are finally remodelling our kitchen, now that we are retired, and have time to do so. The cabinets are home made in my woodworking shop from solid pine, with solid oak countertops and a table for two that is foldable and immediately in front of our kitchen windows, so that we can see the garden and wildlife (usually assorted birds, and some squirrels). Our ceiling is 8' (2.4m). At the very top there is enclosed perimeter shelving for long-term storage that is 2' (60 cm) deep and ca. 1' (35 cm) high. Below this there are 1' (30 cm) deep and ca 2' (65 cm) high units for more general storage. Below this there is a workspace using 2' (60 cm) wide countertops. Below this is additional storage, that is almost 2' (55 cm) deep. Throughout the kitchen most of the cabinets feature sliding doors. We have a double sink because it is more effective for food preparation. We wanted our kitchen bright and colourful, so the walls are painted in a light yellow. The sliding doors have an inner sliding door on the left in a brighter yellow and an outer sliding door on the right in a bright green. The drawer fronts are also painted bright yellow (left) and green (right), mirroring the sliding doors. The ceiling has white 2' x 4' (60 cm x 120 cm) tiles, while the flooring consists of 1' x 1' (30 cm x 30 cm) linoleum tiles in bright yellow. The splashboards are white. The appliances are also white, except for the black induction stove top. About 30 years ago, we replaced the original plastic handles with metal ones throughout the kitchen. These have been retained to give a sense of continuity to the kitchen. We have no desire to have a kitchen that looks high end or stunning, just practical and comfortable. Building a DIY kitchen costs less than a third one would expend on a commercial kitchen.
