I show how I replaced a rotted dishwasher/kitchen sink drain tailpiece. This is not a how-to video, it's a how I did it video.

The Teflon tape is not needed. It won't hurt anything but the seal on these fittings is not being made on the treads but on the slip joint washer. It's tapered so that as you tighten the nut the washer is forced between the two pipes which also has a taper. That's where the water tight seal is made.
@jimmonte9826
@jimmonte9826 11 ай бұрын
Using the Teflon tape is worse than not using it in the sense that it does not contribute to the seal but interferes with the tightening of the threads that do.
@richmac918
@richmac918 11 ай бұрын
@@jimmonte9826 Possibly. Many people think the teflon tape is for sealing when in reality it is really considered a thread lubricant. I had a plumber friend correct me some years ago when I mentioned sealing threads with Teflon tape.

OMG, dude, thank you so much for all the time and effort you put into this video!!!! You probably saved us at least $300 on a call to our plumber. I love plumbing and learning about it and this is just what I needed. In our case it's actually for a bathroom sink but it appears to be pretty much the same idea minus the dishwasher portion. Thank you again!

yes brass and copper eventually corrode but pvc does not, but when it comes to sprinkler systems and where the valves are, or elbows pvc piping can break, due to cold and hot temps. the pvc piping usually should not break inside of your home unless there is a flaw in the the manufacturing of the pipe it didnt cure properly in an area, but have not really heard of pvc piping breaking that are in between studs of a house I am sure it is possible but highly unlikely over copper or brass piping corroding over time and springing a leak.

You answered my question on how the bottom slip nut seals with the tapered gasket on the tail piece, because my Badger Incinerator is internally leaking and water is coming out of the bottom of the unit, but I dont know if i am going to replace the disposal unit or just put the strainer and tailpiece back in place, but i just did not know how the bottom of the tailpiece seals to the trap joint, but now I know, thanks sevenfortyone you made it really simple for anyone to do this job.

When checking for leaks, fill up the sink with water and then drain. There is a lot more volume of water at one time than just letting the water run.

I think this type of dishwasher tailpiece connector might work on our single drain sink, however I didn't see what type of seal is being used on the top of this tailpiece. The sink drain I'll be working on doesn't allow for the type of seal that would slip up inside of the bottom of the sink drain. Suggestions? Perhaps just a flat seal that is also inserted into the inside of the top of the tail piece and nut at the top?

Teflon tape is not necessary here, rather it can cause the plastic nut to crack when tightening. There are rubber rings to make the connection watertight. And why you turned water off, when you are reparing drain, not water supply? :-)

I noticed when I changed over to the PVC Dishwasher tail pipe that the PVC nut by the strainer basket kind of expanded when I was running hot water! A ruler across the opening? Wrap a piece of string around then measure that? I have no ideA and I'm goingto attempt this myself. I noticed the pipes come in different sizes online. You didn't mention the top hat gasket between the drain tailpipe and the flanged tailpipe.
@kellerrobert80
@kellerrobert80 8 жыл бұрын
Didn't look like one came with the kit so it may not have been installed. Flanged fittings are unique and different than most under-sink connections, which use tapers. Here's what was needed for your application. www.plumbingsupply.com/images/tdp-1andhalf-poly-tailpiece-washer.jpg That tapered washer you installed at the top (or did you go washer-less up there?) will leak. The bottom one is correct. Note: this is a "top hat" washer for flanges and goes INSIDE the tailpiece between the plastic tailpiece and the metal strainer so when you tighten the nut, the washer compresses and makes waterproof the connection between the tailpiece and the strainer. Hope that helps. -- EDIT: After watching again, the Teflon tape may be saving you but it's not best practice.
