Don't bypass any fuses unless you're very, very sure of what you're doing. No matter how sure you are that my basement is a mess, don't comment on that either.
(I'm presently seriously reorganizing everything, hence the reason for the massive pile of crap.) It's looked like someone bombed a RadioShack down here for entirely too long, so I'm putting up shelves and culling crap. It's a tedious process.
After replacing (almost) all of the CrapXon capacitors and haphazardly jumpering the blown picofuse, this Samsung Syncmaster 203b LCD monitor is working again.
I don't really know what the "correct" pronunciation for "picofuse" is. I think it could go either way, but only after shooting this video did I get to thinking that I'd heard it pronounced as "pee-co-fewse" instead of "pie-co-fewse".
Use reputable capacitors from reputable makers (such as Panasonic, Nippon Chemi-Con, United Chemi-Con, Elna, Rubycon, Sanyo, and Nichicon, amongst others) or you will be doing this again sooner than you'd like. Some people report good results with the initially suspicious Samxon brand capacitors, but I don't use them as so many much more reputable and long-standing brands exist. Samxon GF series capacitors are known to be bad news.
Buy only from reputable dealers, so as to avoid getting fakes. Most electrolytic capacitors are so cheap that it's not worth trying to shave a few more pennies off the price. Digi-Key and Mouser Electronics are both examples of reputable sellers. eBay sellers with large quantities of positive feedback, high seller ratings, a focus on electronic parts and not operating out of countries where fake parts are extremely prevalent may also be suitable sources.
I've been more or less "booted out" from using the kitchen table as an electronics repair platform, but the title remains mainly as a suggestion that anyone of reasonable intelligence who invests some time and effort can repair a lot of things that break down and save tremendous amounts of time and money doing so. However, always keep your own safety at the top of your consideration, and don't take stupid chances or do dumb things. As always, I am not responsible for the results if you attempt to repair your own stuff.

Well done folk! I firstly changed all caps with bigger onnes in fact of uF but didn't power on. When i saw your video i understoold i had to change pico fuse too! So tonight while i was listening your clear voice and instructions i took of a 4A 125v picofuse from a broken pcb from another lcd screen after testing if it was good and if mine was broken (it was!) and changed it. Pointed my flashlight to the mains just in case switching on would power down the whole home and.... voilà! Screen works briliantly! Thanks again :-) By the way caps (until not used on timing circuits) can be changed with higher voltage ones (just more expensive) and higher capacitance ones (just has more capacity), ... just look at temperature tollerance and size for fitting on PCB! Greetings from Italy!

Well done bill :-)) I have to admit that i have bypassed those daft fuses with fuse wire of the correct capacity, or soldering stubby wires onto a small glass fuse and inserting into the pcb instead. I like propper fuses+holders better, you can isolate sections by lifting a fuse or/and connecting an ammeter across the holder :-). Wrongly marked silkscreen pcb's did make me jump three feet off my chair as the brand new panasonic 105 deg cap exploded with glee lol, Ahh fun :-))

another good job Bill, I often take short cuts too, but didn't you have any glass fuses on hand? I usually keep 2, 3 and 4 amp fuses on hand in the shop, but sometimes I run out and so I'll bridge a fuse with a piece of wire like you did.

I always called them "pee-co" fuses. That fuse supplies DC power to the backlight inverter circuit. Without it you would have gotten video, but no backlight. In my case I couldn't be bothered to find another picofuse and installed a Rat Shack glass fuse holder and used a fast blow fuse I had laying around of a slightly lower rating (the picofuse was classed as "super fast" blow). Works fine and if it ever blows out again, its easily replaced with something you can find locally.

You were lucky. I had a CRT that killed my graphics card. When I left my room for lunch everything was fine. I had left my monitor powered on because I was using a screensaver back then. When I came back the room smellt like burnt electronics. The monitor was off (wouldn´t turn on) and I later found out that my Graphics card was dead. Was a GeForce MX440. The rest of the Pentium 3 computer was fine. My guess is that the monitor shorted out and sent high voltage into the graphics card

I have soldered in normal fuses in place of the pico fuse (using the correct ratings btw) before esp when out in the sticks where deliveries by post are at best once a week but more often once a month. The bad cap thing is annoying. I love the shelving system you have, I will have to do somthing like that as well here as I am getting far too many system units, switches etc on the floor. Oh I have had electronics let out the smoke before, hence why I tend to power up unkown items (status wise) outside, also if it goes bang better out there than inside, I also use a power point with a 5amp breaker just for repairs so the main breakers do not trip.

I did a capacitor repair on an old Optimquest Q7. I recommend buying high temperature 10,000h Nichicon capacitors because why not? You might as well make sure it never breaks again. Oh, and unless you're about 10 monitors, you'll spend more on shipping than parts anyways.

***** Eh, well it really doesn't seem like your "Typical Samsung piece o' crap!". Those 20" 4:3 panels with the adjustable stands and DVI are my favourite. I have two Dell ones that I use side by side with my Precision. I can understand why there hasn't been any electronics repair activity in the kitchen lately. My mother definitely likes to make herself heard when I leave some of my crap around the house. Even if it is tucked away in a corner somewhere. And especially if I'm in the middle of something and decide to walk away from it for whatever reason.

Looks like a great monitor - I'd love to find a good 4:3 - 5:4 LCD with a good size and resolution. It seems all I ever find are small-sized 1024x768 with extreme scratches all over them. I wish the larger, more desirable monitors in those squarish aspect ratios were easier to find. It annoys me that 16:9 has taken over, I really dislike that ratio for computer use. I recapped a Samsung 930b a few years ago, it had a similar issue. Encouraged by the experience, I acquired a duplicate which needed the same repair. What I found interesting is that the service menu showed both monitors had nearly the same number of operating hours, but mine had a better picture. I could only attribute this to the fact that I always ran my monitor at very low brightness with higher contrast, while the other had been left at brightness 50. At that point, it needed about 30 points higher brightness than the first monitor just to make them match. I find that even a brightness of 0 looks fine to me - I don't notice it unless I were to compare with another monitor, but really, I just think most monitors look overpoweringly bright. :) Since that time, the latter 930b lost it's backlight. My original, which always ran at low brightness, is fortunately still working. That 203b looks excellent, I'd love to find something like that, congrats on the pickup and repair.

***** I agree, I try to recycle/reuse things as much as possible. I have a bunch of those tennis racket style bug zappers and when they break I fix them, One was munched pretty bad (Grid frame was broken but grid was fine) but I was able to fix it with a drill and some hot glue. Another was beyond repair so I just kept the handle and eventually used the flyback circuit inside to Sup up another zapper. I enjoy fixing things and tinkering. It feels good to know that you fixed something and saved it from ending up in a landfill. A lot of the issues are not hard to fix if you have some knowledge in repairing electronics.

***** Not only that the Capxon Caps are that bad, it's also the Wisdom caps that are bad two where Emerson buys the cheap design capacitors like my '07 Emerson WB/FM/AM/TV Tuner, the Wisdom 1000µF 10V since it went bad, it tend to cause the speakers to make buzzing noise, and after I remove the bad Capacitor and install the fresh used caps include Capxon 1000µF 10V Caps, it doesn't cause to make buzzing noise, and it doesn't cause to damage to the speakers. I used to save some certain caps like Bestec Power Supply, I remove the good caps and store them for a while where I save some money and to not try to replace any other memory chips where the power supply is no longer use, and same thing for Laptop's external power brick two that I save some caps two.

***** Same here. I was actually recording a video on Windows XP POSReady 2009 and had paused a couple of hours to install basic essentials (updates, firefox, acrobat reader, office, etc.) and that really caught me off guard to see that. I had coincidentally disabled the increasingly annoying update notifications on my main computer a number of weeks before, so I had no idea what was coming until I fired it up on that virtual machine and found that "browser.tabs.ontop" was gone from the configuration screen and I couldn't really customize anything. On top of that, I decided it was time to find a replacement when I saw that I was going to have to install an add-on and spend ten minutes of my time getting Firefox "up to spec" on new installations. I'd been a "firefox cheerleader" since version 2, but this is truly the end of the line for them. RIP Firefox (2004-2014).

I should power it for a half of a day (with strange and different LED blinking pattern) and after about that time it gave me good picture. Because of that reason I never turned it off to have always a picture without half-day waiting time. After some days it suddenly turned off and the blue LED has now the same pattern as yours. Hey Will, is it possible to repair an HP Pavilion CRT monitor that likes to shut itself off after being turned on for 5-10 minutes or so? I understand that tinkering around with CRTs is extremely dangerous for those who do not know what they're doing, but I'd really like to repair this monitor because the display is in amazing condition. It turns on and stays on for a while, but then it flickers and turns off. If the repair is too risky, I'm fine with leaving the monitor as it is, as I already have a Dell CRT that is in even better condition. The three-prong power socket is pretty dirty, as is the VGA cord, so maybe cleaning the contacts would fix the problem? I'm just not sure if it's that easy to fix.
@uxwbill
@uxwbill 8 жыл бұрын
Yes. Unfortunately it may not be worth it, excellent condition notwithstanding. The first thing you'd have to determine is why the monitor is shutting down, and that's going to require some diagnostics and proficiency in troubleshooting. I'd be suspicious of two things: capacitors or the x-ray protection shutdown circuitry, which kills the high voltage supply to the picture tube if it should climb too high. CRT TVs and monitors are dangerous to work on for two different reasons: first is the high voltage circuitry that drives the picture tube. Second, and potentially much more dangerous are those monitors that use a "hot" chassis design, basically meaning that one side of the chassis is connected directly to the AC power line. The deflection circuitry, horizontal in particular, also operates at very hazardous voltages that are far beyond what a lot of multimeters can safely measure. So, basically, if you aren't sure of what you're doing and you don't have the right test equipment, don't try to repair your monitor.

***** At least it's not linear supplies! ;) I've run in to some with some really HUGE caps. Those would bite a bit...if they don't discharge quickly. Seems some of the big ones in some of my linear supplies DO discharge rather quickly thankfully. Devices smoking are still the worst...especially when it's the 12V rail of a device that's gone short somewhere before overcurrent protection kicks in and the entire wire burns. Smells awful! Still have NO IDEA how that happened as I propped stuff up to AVOID a short!
