Bill, you never ramble, you entertain, you educate with humor :-D Nice recovery bill, i bet that the worst fault was the ribbon connectors not allways behaving themselves, you have fondled the camera back to health :D Your videos are also handy for seeing inside equipment, sometimes ive avoided dissasembly of a device just because it was a risk, i didnt want to make it worse. But one sunny day i helped my mate swap out a dead gearbox, unfortunatly he had bought the wrong type from the car yard, it was the estate version, the gearing was identical and the difference was only in the remote and "bit that stuck out the back". He gave up as it seemed doooomed lol, i said "if its fooked we cant make it worse", lets take both to peices and mix/match the parts. All the parts were fitted and a splash of oil added to keep the gears happy. Worked better than ever, sometimes if its dead, its not a risk to open it :D

I had a CCD-TR940 (the one that provided the "Lost Hi8 tape: Snowboarding in Stereo" footage) that had the same problems: no power in camera mode, flakey eject, and partially inoperable tape transport buttons (although using the remote control to operate the playback functions worked fine). I opened it up and discovered quite a lot of corrosion on the circuit board for the recording button and lock switch.

I gotta say these repair videos and computer videos are educational and interesting

I have the same camcorder and it has been giving me trouble - the rewind transport button suddenly won't work half of the time. I was actually going to take it apart today and didn't get around to it. What a strange coincidence to see this video pop up on my feed ! lol Thanks for the video, Bill. I enjoyed it.

Great job! I have 2 I need to service...one that needs new caps and another thats DOA...I have not been in that big of a hurry to repair for the same reasons you have found...how fun it is to work on them...but I will one day... :)

Speaking of PS/2s! I got a Model 8580-111 that sat in storage since the mid 90's. The backup battery was dead, so I put a new one in... but it still does nothing. Power supply powers on, hard drive spins up, but that's it. Doesn't even do a floppy seek to read the reference disk.

That is a 1999 model. Early NP-FXXX InfoLithium batteries didn't have the letter L on them at all as they were retroactively named. The NP-F330 that came with my 1998 CCD-TRV65 certainly didn't, mostly because there were no other series of InfoLithium batteries at the time.

I usually take to Jewelry Section over the stores and ask them I can replace the CR2025 Batteries over Wal-Mart for example, they do sometimes I may have to pay to replace the CR2025 batteries where I need to get my Remote to function properly and it worked now. =)

That service connector has a little knock-out inside the battery compartment for it (that little panel with the top aligned with the bottom of the viewfinder's resting position) It's kind of amusing that you upload this video as I am trying to troubleshoot a HandyCam here - a CCD-TR317 (PAL), the model below it with a B/W viewfinder. This one here has an F550 battery (and a dead CR-2025 of course)

I ended up having to use a 9V battery to even get the tape loader to move on my TRV815. I think it might have had some water damage and the tape had shed a bunch of oxide all over XD I gotta wonder if this is why the seller thought it was broken. The $5 Hi8 XR candyham, wouldn't that be a thing.

I did the same exact thing you did with the night shot switch to a power switch on a early 90s handycam and had the same reaction, although it was followed by a swear.

My parents still have the old Sony Handycam Hi8 camcorder which has a broken view screen (flip screen), ate a head cleaning tape, and I don't know what other problems it has. I might as well try to fix ye olde Candyham, and do a test of it, and record the footage from a new tape to a blank DVD to see if it'll live or what.

This looks like it might be a low end model of what TheMaritimeMan may have shown in one of his videos.

I waited until Thursday night to spray a Lonestar Singaloden full of CRC QD® Electronic Cleaner. I made the most detrimental sounding problem go away. There was some sort of repeated thumping sound coming from the amp when the record side was used to play a tape. I watched the state of the union address. I generally stay clear of talking politics. My opinion of the whole thing was not good.

Great video. I have a Sony CCD-TRV40 I'd like to repair. Swing-out LCD panel not working, but the viewfinder still works. The membrane buttons sort of work, but when playing a tape it won't play for more than a few seconds, then goes bananas. Loads tapes fine. Unfortunately, it is someone else's camcorder, but I was hoping to delicately take a look at it and maybe find some simple issue. I suspected the membrane buttons could be making poor contact, or stuck down making contact. I took it apart to a level, but I don't see any way to open the module with the membrane buttons themselves. Seems glued or mysterious tabs I don't know about. If you have any experience with such camcorders, I hope you can post a video about it. I also have a CCD-V101 I'd like to repair. I've got a really good set of manuals for that one. Given time, I might give it a try. Looking at the manuals, it is amazing the amount technology involved and the number of adjustments that can be done. Thanks for your video. Excellent tutorial, I have the same camcorder, and with the same problems. But with flexible cables cut from the camera and the button panel. You know where I can buy these cables? I have searched aliexpres and I have not found. able I have searched wrong.

Could you use the PJ200 in SD mode? I use my SR11 in SD mode occasionally when I play around with iMovie HD 06 on my iMac G3.
