I was fairly bored when I decided to repair this DVD player and make a video about it. This might be obvious in the finished video. I'm not finished with the repair yet, as I still need to fix the power supply. There may be a part two covering the power supply repair.
Beyond those reasons already given in the video, there are a few other reasons why repairing this unit really wasn't a waste of time or even a bad idea. Like many similar cheap Chinese DVD players, this unit has undocumented capability, some of which would no doubt seriously annoy the Movie Mafia. In particular, it can be fairly easily made to ignore region coding, thus allowing it to play any disc from around the world.
The CH-DVD 300 can also supposedly perform realtime conversion of PAL video for display on an NTSC monitor.
I'm probably not supposed to say anything about the former feature in the DMCA-infested world where I live, but it's no secret to anyone who has ever been even slightly curious.
Due to this unit's need for only two power supply voltages, it would be very easy to convert it for battery-powered operation. People seem to report that this unit will also play almost anything, possibly including small Frisbees and circle-cut lunch meat.
(There may be something else in this video that would probably also serve to really light a fire under the Movie Mafia. Not that I said or even did anything of the sort, of course.)

My uncle is an all round electronics / computer boffin who taught many people in industry. He is completely self taught from the age of approx 10yrs old in the early 1950s. He applied for a senior position at a local college / uni and beat the next best applicant, who was loaded with degrees etc. They gave my uncle the job because the other guy could not get 35yrs experience over night, but my uncle could add his qualifications much more quickly and easily. His experience & skills priceless.

I fixed it!...I fixed it!...I did it!!! Thank you sooo much uxwbill for the video!!! I've never done anything like this before and IT WORKS!!! I followed your lead on the video and after pondering all you did and taking the CyberHome DVD 300 apart per your instructions, checking everything I could see...tightening all connections, etc., got the tray working but would only play CDs...I finally decided to clean the laser lens!!! I put in a DVD and voila IT WORKS!!! I'm so tickled that I got it working, I've decided to go out in my building and get all the other DVD players and VCRs and see if I can fix them... I'm just soooo pleased...couldn't have done it without your video!!! Wouldn't even have known where to start. Thanks again!!!

Hey uxwbill, not sure if you'll see this on such an old video but I just wanted to let you know how important this video is to me. I first saw it when I was a young child before going to school in the morning and while I was already interested in electronics and computers this video really helped spark my interest in electronics repair and preservation. I hope it gives you some kind of satisfaction to know you may have helped some in 'the next generation' acquire an interest in this sort of stuff :)

Nicely done bill :-) I repaired my frends music centre cd player years ago, it had the same kind of problem :-) Three of the plastic pegs were snapped in a very tight space, as glueing was not possible i did a bodge, solid copper wire was heated then plunged into the plastic then after snipping to the correct length i fitted wire insulation on the wire pegs i had created to make the thickness correct. Worked like a dream :-), lasted 9 years untill the amplifier went bang.

Ah yes. CyberHome. Some of the cheapest electronics you could buy. I've seen many of those DVD players all over the place in thrift stores under various brand names. They were actually manufactured by ILo Technologies, basically Wal-Mart's in-house brand. I suppose if you want a cheap DVD player that will do its job, for probably all of a couple of months, then you could buy one of these. Although, just like VCRs, I wont buy them if they're too new. Just a couple of days ago I found a Sony DVP-S3000 DVD player that was made in October of 1997, pretty much 6 months after DVD players were released in the US/Canada. It is the most solidly built DVD player I've ever seen. So many separate boards and individual components on the inside. Plus, it weighs a lot too. Over 16 years old and it has no problems whatsoever. Did give it a cleaning though. Anyways, as mentioned before, yes, CyberHome is gone. Their California warehouse was raided by the F.B.I. because apparently they used some of Phillips' patents without a license. Kudos to you for fixing that thing. I'd never bother with one of those things. Way too cheap for my liking.

***** Man, your responses are never disappointing. I do suppose this little thing might not be as bad as I thought. Having the region-free ability is certainly cool too. It certainly isn't as bad as my grandparent's Magnavox DVD/VCR combo player. That thing has got to be one of the poorest manufactured things that I've ever seen. VHS assembly is cheap thin metal and a lot of plastic parts as well. Plus, it just absolutely stinks inside of cheap electronics.

1980sGamer Well, I just bought one of these from a Goodwill for $4.50. Came with everything too. The power cord, av cord and the remote. Plus, it literally looked like it was never used. It was still in the plastic bags. Took it apart and sure enough, the same capacitor blew in the same location as yours, uxwbill. Might replace it. but I'm not sure yet. Meh. Everything else was worth the $4.50 to me.

Multiple grounds reduces noise in the data lines. It also helps isolate the electrical noise generated in one part of the circuitry from other parts of the circuitry (for example, so that the servo noise doesn't leak into the audio output).

Plastic model cement or ABS glue can work on that kind of plastic. I keep a soldering iron handy that I ONLY use to melt plastic. I use it specifically to weld parts like this back on, using scrap from junked units as filler. Once you get the hang of it, it can be quite strong.

I had a CyberHome player I bought from Tesco here in the UK in around 2004 that (from the front) looks identical to that one. The remote was one of those "card" style remotes that uses a CR2032 lithium cell. It obviously had differences to the one here in so much as it had a SCART output on the rear instead of the component on this one. (SCART is capable of providing full RGB signal as well as other things)). I can't remember if the PSU was universal but the one I had ran happily on UK mains

I've got nearly the same unit, called a CH 400, got it at a supermarket here in the UK, and it's quite handy as my wife's a USA citizen from Tennessee. You can set it up to play different region's DVDs as I found out accidentally ! So though my old Toshiba turns its nose up at anything except 0 and 2 's, this thing plays US Region 1's.

Great video. I had this player back in the day and I really miss it for its ability to play multiple formats and be made region-free. I hung onto it for many years after it stopped working in hopes that I'd one day find a way to resurrect it. When I first saw this video I regretted not hanging on to it longer, but after watching it all the way through, I realized I very well probably couldn't have gone through these repair steps anyway. I really despise the region encoding and format incompatibility restrictions of modern players, especially considering the fact that some DVDs are not available in region 1 NTSC, so it's just plain impossible to get a copy and play it legit on US players. It's so infuriatingly stupid. Luckily I managed to obtain another old, hackable player that I'm able to watch anything on, but I know it's only a matter of time before this one stops working and I'm screwed again X( So, in summary, this player had two issues: the power supply and the broken plastic tab. How did you deal with the power supply issue? I wouldn't think it would be feasible to actually use this player with the cover off, running an external power source into it like you did in the video. P.S. I still have the remote for this if you want it.

Thanks for your advice about moving the units to another place. I had already moved them (thus unplugging the power) to a new location side by side because I thought there might be interference from my new plasma TV. Do you think unplugging the power supply board could be different than just unplugging the unit? That was the test I previously reported. The working unit was actually closer to a window than the non-working one so that rules out sunlight interference and there was no artificial lighting or other RF source operating at the time that I'm aware of

This seems very similar to the more modern version of the 30-dollar DVD player, the Sony DVP-SR210P. One difference is the Sony does not play all region DVDs. I prefer the term inexpensive to cheap, because these, while they are not feature-packed, actually seem to put out GREAT picture and sound! I have a high quality 5.1 surround sound system with an actual receiver, 5 full size speakers (no plastic speakers here, but not floor standing either) and a 10 inch subwoofer! That little 30-dollar Sony certainly does not sound any worse than a “high quality” unit to me. (It even puts out all 5.1 sound channels!) While it doesn’t have a HDMI port, it does have a coaxial digital audio out and component video. (Please note, I AM using a red-yellow-white AV RCA cable for the component video, cuz it was all I had.) Edit: I remember now that I accidentally had it fall a few inches while playing, and guess what, IT DIDN’T EVEN SKIP!

JB Weld might have held that peg on. I once used it to splint a plastic part of a socket 478 heatsink, and it has held ever since under stress. However, the peg on that DVD player didn't have much surface area to work with, so that could be an issue.

This is why I made a shopping list for the H.P monitor, even though H.P used to be a brand with a good reputation, and the design of this monitor is good overall, they used Chinese "mystery brand" capacitors throughout. I don't know how long it was between when the monitor broke down and was dumped but the dates inside seem to indicate it was produced in 2006.

I had a couple of these DVD players. One of which I got from Target under the Trutech name. It says TruTech on the outside, but everything on the inside says Cyberhome. Even the board inside the remote said Cyberhome. Both ended up with the same issues. First the remote sensors stopped working, easy fix, but annoying nonetheless, then they ended up not working properly while playing movies. About 2/3s into a movie, the motor that moved the laser around would act jittery, causing the movie to skip and freeze. I tried to just replace the motor, which didn't help. I just ended up replacing them entirely.

My relatives once had a PC with a Ricoh CD-RW drive in it, when you opened the drive it would only stay open for a few seconds before closing, the drive worked, but when inserting or removing CD's you'd have to be quick. Could this problem also be a symptom of a broken limit switch pin that detects when the tray is open? It could also be that the tray wasn't coming all the way out as far as it should, but it looked like it was ejecting all the way out.

Thanx for the vid. I have the exact same player that I just tried to use after quite a while of non-use and it isn't powering up... Yes, it's just a cheap DVD player and we don't really use those much anymore, but I hate just throwing away electronics and it is a great size. Opened it up and nothing was obviously broken/blown. Decided to google and check and came across your vid. I'm betting the same issue. I have an old AT power supply, so I'll be able to test it. One thing I did notice when I opened it was that at least one of those caps in that same area was obviously bulging a bit. So, if it works without the PSU (and/or if the voltages aren't looking like 5v and 12v), I might try replacing those caps. Yeah, probably not worth it in the grand scheme of things nowadays. But still... ;-)

Have to decide if it is worth spending much more on it... ;-)

Great video. Keep them coming. I have the Cyber Home CH-DVD 401. Problem is when plugged in only get RED Light (which you told me means it is not turned-on but has power because the RED Light lights) and most likely indicates a power supply problem. I am trying to determine how to check the power supply or maybe a "switch" problem? What are the chances it is the switch and not the power supply? In any case I will re-watch your KZfaq presentation and try to analyze the pwr supply. I don't have any pwr supplies around here. Your thoughts or comment appreciated. Great video. Keep them coming.

***** OK. I lean to the capacitors being shot. I will go to the local "Repair Cafe" (or something akin to this) take it apart, look inside. I have NOT done this yet - should be fun when time permits. Must say I find it strange the RED stand-by lamp lights but the unit will not light GREEN via on/off switch activation - this common for capacitor problems? Again -- GREAT VIDEO. I mean it. More people should do more repair. It would be good for them and the rest of the world.

Good video, informative for sure. A little lengthy on the pre-video safety lecture & with the personal opinions on people destroying functioning electronic equipment. However, this is of course your video so it's your way. I own one of these units and this video helped make it functional again. This DVD player I liked particularly because it was easy to change the region coding through a few easy button pushes on the remote. This was helpful to play some DVDs I ordered from the U.K. that have different region code and won't play on most U.S. DVD players. It seemed to me that only a few DVD players I reviewed were actually able to be hacked to change the coding. And there wasn't any burned DVD or CD this player wouldn't play. Cheapie unit but good one IMO. Thanks for the repair help and can I borrow the Matlock DVD? lol

Bill, did you ever get the remote control for this unit? I have 2 of these Cyberhome players, both dead. Do you want the remotes and/or any other parts?

I have a player like this but it looks different, also by cyberhome. it's still holding up, and it was manufactured around 2002.

Even though for my 2006 Trutech TT-320 DVD Player, on the motherboard and the drive looks related to like Cyberhome DVD Player which it is almost the same spare parts where trutech buy at Cyberhome which I didn't know about that. I did replace the caps on my '06 Trutech TT-320 DVD Player on power supply and not only that I got them for free where they don't want the console, and so, I got them, check them out since they wrote it down say "No Good, Returned on 7/6/12," found a bulging cap, and finally, replace the cap including 1000 µF 10 V cap that I install an new one, and it worked again. =)

Still find it amazing that something so small and insignificant can stop the whole unit performing its primary function....

That is such a simple supply i have faith you will fix it,, you might want to invest in an ESR meter if you find yourself recaping alot of devices. what are the symptoms other than the visual bulged caps?

It plays audio & it has been playing some DVD, but not all. Gradually it has begin to skip more & now it mostly won't play disks. It tries to... gets to a point & then just tells you it is bad. It is doing this more times than not. How do I know what the lens looks like? Where is it? Thanks again.

super glue never works on that struff very well especially when it is under stress. sometimes if possible you can put a screw in its place if you have room for nuts.

When it came to the chips, I'm assuming they were informed guesses and previous experience. Flash memory chips tend to look same-ish, it would make sense that the video decoder is the largest chip (it being the most complex), and the drive microcontroller probably looks like any old drive microcontroller for the most part. I'm sure this isn't the first time he's worked on a DVD player and drives as well.

I found that the four resistors on the power board were not working. Where can I get the power board for the CyberHome DVD 300?
@uxwbill

Parts aren't available and the company is long out of business. All you can do is repair the board yourself. If there are burned or faulty resistors, they are usually the effect and not the cause.

There's nothing wrong with my power supply or my door opening or ejecting. Its saying no disc or it takes forever to load but never plays the movie. It makes weird noises like something is loose inside I've taken it apart but have no clue as to what the problem is nothing is broken that I can see. So what could be the problem? I need help lke yesterday.
