Lost my Smarty Jones in 2015 to an oral tumor that destroyed part of his lower jaw. It’s so good to know how far diagnosis, treatment, and aftercare has advanced for animals. FYI before anyone asks: the cancer literally obliterated 1/3 of the lower jaw bone on one side, it did not appear on an X-ray, there was not a surgical option as the cancer was so aggressive. I’m fortunate to live close to a vet specialty practice, as well as a large veterinary school. I actually considered retiring early to be able to stay home with him, between the dx and the end turned out to be less than 14 days. Still miss my Big Guy.

That's how I lost my first cat - when you find it in the jaw, the prognosis isn't great from the start. It was a very short and bittersweet 4 months before we had to tap him out.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my baby girl to oral cancer back in September of 2020. I knew it was bad because I could smell the tumor in her mouth and it smelled like death. She could barley eat. Vet told me they could try and treat the cancer but she was already an old cat and at best treatment would only have given her a few more months of life. I didn't want her to suffer anymore than she already had so I had her humanely euthanized. I still miss my girl too. She was the sweetest kitty and I still love her so much. Letting go of a pet you're really close with is something that you never really get over imo. I know it's not easy but I hope you've been doing well since your loss.

My daughter's cat had one of those. Vet removed very carefully (he had to chase it from shoulder-blade to hip, but got removed. We thought. It not only came back, it went into her lungs. I could not put her througth that much pain (it came back aggressive) so we had to let her go. I'm so very glad you didn't have to make that choice. Many hugs for Coco and you

It's hard. Our 12 year old cat has a relatively fast growing tumor. It's not causing pain, not impacting quality of life. We've opted not to operate and do radiation because I don't want to put him through that when the prognosis was so poor for long term survival. Just treating him to all the pets and special treats he wants. 🥰

I lost my two year old cat to pancreatic adenocarcinoma in 2020. I teared up when you described what it feels like to have a kitty with such a horrific diagnosis, it really does feel like the whole world disappears and it’s just you and your cat. Suddenly nothing else matters, you are just consumed with this intense fear and dread. At the same time you try to convince yourself that your cat will somehow survive even though they tell you it’s terminal. It’s absolutely horrible and I don’t wish it on anyone. It makes me so happy to see kitties like Coco beat cancer and get to live long happy lives ❤️

I’m so sorry Hannah. I am also going through a hard time with my cat Taz. We are at the very beginning of the diagnostic portion of the journey. Taz lost 5 lbs since June. He’s now running a fever, has elevated white cell count of 30,000, and low protein level. All other senior cat bloodwork came back normal. I’m scared. Hope Coco will live a long life after radiation ❣️

You both are warriors and you've overcome so much but you're also a teaching model, a mentor, and an educator I am so grateful for your Channel. Continued success for the both of you may she also be in remission and stay in remission! My 23-year-old Russian blue made it to her 24th birthday 6 months ago she was diagnosed with cataracts as was I. I don't know much about the lifespan of a Russian Blue but I hope we leave this world together I don't know what I would do without her and every day is a gift she turned 24 in May I hope I have a few more Christmases with her.

I was hesitant to click on this video as my beloved cat-child of 16 years passed 5 days ago. It only took less than a month for a tumor to grow and wrap around her entire bottom jaw. I saw our regular vet and a specialty vet. With her other health conditions and how aggressive the cancer was they didn't see any options other than pain management, which didn't seem fair to do since she struggled just to eat. I had to make the terrible decision to let her go. I'm so comforted to see others who struggled with the same heartbreak and are still finding a way through the grief. Bless you all ❤ thank you for sharing your stories

I lost my first cat to a vaccine induced sarcoma. We blamed the feline leukemia vaccine, and so did a lot of other folks. The vaccine manufacturer changed the location of the vaccine and provided a $5,000 surgical fund per inoculation. Fort Dodge is no longer around, thank god. Similar to your story, I discovered his lump when it smaller than a BB. It was located between the shoulder blades. I used to give him massages every morning when it was discovered. This was on New Years day. We went to the vet the first day they were open, told the vet where the lump was located and they couldn't find it. I placed my finger on it to show the vet, at which point he felt the BB, but thought it wasn't a problem. Over the next two weeks, the lump grew in size, so back to the vet we went. Yes it had grown, we'll schedule him for surgery. The following he had surgery. The lump had grown to the size of a pea, so they took more tissue and a large flap of skin. Nasty looking silicone drain. He looked tired and had the look what did you do to me Dad. Recovery took 6-8 weeks. Then about 3 months later, the lump came back. Second surgery, a lot more muscle and skin removed. He bounced back super fast. Fur growth was quick, so that three weeks after surgery, other than being shorter than his other fur, he was back to normal. Radiation wasn't recommended, but chemo was. Two months of twice a week infusion which he took like a champ, the cancer returned. I couldn't put his through a third surgery, so we lived the best time together we could. A few years later, I found a feline only veterinarian that didn't believe in constant vaccines, so distemper and rabies vaccines went to 3 year and 5 year cycles.

We lost our 14year old cat last week because of a big lump on his shoulder (probably also a sarcoma). It started with a lump on his paw (right above his little foot cushion). We went to the vet and had it tested, but nothing came out. We thought 'maybe it'll go away on it's own'. But it kept on growing, so we decided to let the vet take it away. 2 weeks after that surgery, (it really seems that it grew overnight), there was a huuuge lump on his shoulder. We immediately called our vet and asked if we could come. She tested it, but nothing came out, she thought maybe it was from a fall, or he bumped into something. So we gave him medication and waited for it to get smaller. But it didn't. Little by little it grew, and the lump on his paw also returned after about a month. We knew that it was probably spread out and we didn't want to put a 14 year old cat through more surgeries and radiation :( so last week, we decided that we had to let him go. We love you Oliver ❤

A couple years back I lost a dog to cancer. She was 14, and may not have lived through the treatment or even had the same quality of life after. It was a tough decision, but we decided not to treat it. We gave her palliative care (cannabis gummies) and she had a great last six months. At the end of that it was a 12 hour sharp decline before we put her down. I'm happy we had that time together at the end though.

Thank you for doing this! I have a similar story. In January I noticed a small weird feeling lump in the right rear flank of my sweet kitty Monica. Same thing, the vet did a fine needle aspirate and it came back as nothing. Well a couple weeks later the mass had grown, so I went to get another fine needle aspirate and that came back as inconclusive. I made an appointment with a specialist and finally that aspirate came back as a feline injection site sarcoma. By this point her tumor had grown to 11cm by 7cm. Just the week prior it was 7cm by 5cm. I saw a surgeon and a radiation oncologist and they suggested the surgery to remove the tumor, which would be a huge portion of her right hip and flank. And radiation 5 days a week for a month. It is such a hard decision but I have decided I just could not put her through this. So now we are doing palliative care for her and just trying to make her last days here the best they can be. Thank you for all you do and I hope Coco is happy and healthy for many years to come!

This is a very similar thing to what we experienced with our senior cat Mushu. And with his extreme stress in the car we also decided not to put him through it, because the vet said in Mushu's case the tumor was almost guaranteed to come back. It's such a hard decision--lots of sleepless nights and tears. But in the end you know what is best for your kitty and how to handle it. Bless you and I hope you are cherishing your days with Monica. xoxo

I am sorry that you, Andrew and Coco had to go through such a horrible year. Please don't think I am diminishing what you went through by saying I had 25 weekdays of radiation last year. Honestly i think it was harder on my hubby than it was on me except when my sunburn started to peel. We have only had feline fur children so it puts you through the wringer when they are unwell, One of our boys had to have his urinary tract rearranged due to crystals and blockages so was hospitalised for 6 days. My hubby and I visited every day. So I can imagine the heartache you went through . Enjoy your time with your furry girl and I'm sure she knows how much she is loved.Stay safe.😼

Oh Hannah, so very hard to know the right thing to do for our fur babies. But I have learned through many trials that 1) be an advocate for your cat 2) trust your gut when you feel something is wrong (you know your cat better than anyone) 3) the decisions can be tough but when you love that companion what you choose to do is done from love - there is no right and wrong. God bless you for all you do for those adorable creatures. THEY are blessed to have you by their side!

I am so glad that you were able to catch it in time for Coco. Lost my own precious favorite kitty to cancer a few years ago. She went in for a routine dental cleaning and they discovered a rapidly growing tumor in her jawbone. Gave her only one month to live. Fortunately, we arranged the right treatment plan that she actually lived two months beyond that expected timeframe. But also it really hurt seeing her deteriorating in front of us. My other cats realized how depressed her death impacted me and had spent the remainder of their lives filling the gap of losing my snuggle companion.

Coco's journey has been going on for a year now. This is her third bump of her journey with cancer. Her first was cancer which required chemotherapy. When I got my cat the breeder insisted that we only get injections in her extremities bc of FISS. That way if it occurs it isn’t near anything vital. Limits the spreading and makes it easier to remove all the tissue. It was something I hadn’t heard of and was so grateful to the breeder for caring and taking the time to inform me. Hope Coco and you enjoy the time you earned together after going thru all that stress 🖤

I’m so sorry that Coco has been so sick I hope that she makes a complete recovery. Many years ago my cat Tiger developed a spot in his right eye. The vet did some checking found it was cancer. She said that because of his age he was 8 that removal of the eye wasn’t an option. It would just make life harder for him. So we did nothing but let him live his life and love him. He lived another 8 years. He was a wonderful cat.

I was talking to my eye doctor and it's really tricky when cancer is in the eye. Sometimes removal of the eye causes disturbances that causes the cancer cells to be spread around. Now, they look at options to treat it before eye removal is considered as a first option. You made the right call.

My vet seems a little exasperated with me bringing my cat in for every weird thing, but I’d rather know exactly what it is than hope it just goes away. I have made a point to be all up in my cats business since she was a kitten and we do grooming every evening so I tend to notice changes in her behavior and condition early on. Last time it turned out to be an ear infection which I noticed because of excess ear wax and a little more frequent ear scratching. Best of luck to Coco. Thank you for sharing her journey and what you learned. It’s videos like this that have given me the confidence to get my vet involved early.

I know this is more about pets, but a few weeks ago my grandpa got diagnosed with cancer. My parents tried to hide it from me but I eventually found out and it was so upsetting. Seeing how he would go in and out of hospitals and how little he talks these days, he used to make jokes and laugh any chance he got. The cancer is in his throat and sometimes he can’t even drink water. Seeing coco recover from a fast growing cancer gives me a lot of hope, so thank you

Thank you for sharing this with us. I have a white cat with hetrochromia- and while he’s not blind or deaf - I’m paranoid about how the recessive gene can have have unexpected consequences. Cancer being my number one fear. I have co-ownership so I know with his previous home and me - we would do everything we can do if he got sick. I keep him super active, taught him agility, tag your it, he stalks and attacks my ankles, tunnel and jump. He can also give high and low fives and sit. He’s 100% indoors, wet food for breakfast, and dry food and water all day. I’m lucky he’s so tactile and cuddly, it makes it easy to check his health. I suspect he’s about 5 years old. I know most don’t think complete hetrochromia is bad - and it’s not really - but it does increase being born with blindness and deafness - and I’ve heard sometimes other genetic oddities. So far he’s been extremely healthy and bonded to me very quickly. I adopted him August 2022 last year.

About 30 years ago, my 12 year old cat Bandit (indoor/outdoor intact cat) had a lump (the size of a golf ball) that just appeared on his upper shoulder area. I really thought and so did the vet that it was an infected puncture site (like from a bite). So he tried a fine needle aspiration, but nothing came out. So we scheduled surgery. Bandit had his surgery and ended up with an incision that went from his shoulder to his hip. The vet said it was a localized tumor and that they believed they got it all. They never told me it could come back or offer any other treatments. 9 months later he began losing weight, stopped grooming himself, and ate very little. We went back to the vet and they did an X-ray. He now had tumors everywhere. The base of his brain, one kidney, stomach, liver, and the back of his tongue. I was so angry and I just wanted him to survive. But unfortunately, 3 days later, I couldn’t watch him suffer anymore and I took him back to the vet who alleviated his pain and suffering. I miss that cat. He was so amazing. Not to be a “Debbie downer” but just realize that eventually Coco may not be able to bounce back. She is so loved and you’re a great mom. ❤️

Reminds me of my black cat that got shaved, always feel a mix of amusement and empathy for cats getting shaved, because it's like they're nekkid, but they don't really care either way about that.

I was touched by all the bonding time you and Coco had together during her radiation. My guess is that it may have been really nice for her to have you all to herself. She is one heck of a strong cat. Many more years to both of you.

Thank you for this video. We literally just got our Bella home from her leg amputation surgery from the same type of tumor. She is learning how to walk again with no front leg. I hope they will both stay healthy! Thank you for sharing your journey and your perspective on the treatment process. It does feel like you are just alone in it with your baby, and it’s nice knowing someone else has experienced it.

Oof! I'm so sorry you went through that. One of my cats developed a temporary growth at an injection site and Googling it made me PANIC! It turned out to be benign and went away in time, but I have so much empathy for how you must have felt. Love you, Coco! Glad you see you happy and loved!
